I used to visit Bill Hodkinson regulary when i first got into dogs and he was a gentleman , he never matched a dog but liked a dog with spirit and fire , he didnt game test his dogs and bred from untested stock , howevor he had a wealth of knowledge about the old timers and loved to talk about game dogs and roosters , i remember visiting him when we were going to a show with CH Jim and he had poor eyesight but ran his hands all over the dog and was very pleased with the condition we had on him . The shopkeeper you talk about i knew well he kept show staffords and worked them , howevor they were not serious dogmen and but more show people that rolled there dogs . The Monty dog i knew very well he quit cold to CH Oscar in less than thirty mins , the match was made at thirty pounds and Monty came in at thirty two and Oscar at twenty nine . The Rapparee dogs were show dogs only the breeder did not work or test his dogs , they were howevor aggressive towards other dogs and in the show world thats seen as gameness , i saw a few of these dogs and they were very fiery they were not howevor bred as working dogs , i seem to remember that Bill Hodgkinson owned a good one as did the Plymouth Rock , think MOs was called Rifleman or something like that , these two gentlemen were well known in the dog world back then and word soon got around about these dogs and a reputation was created about the Rapparee dogs which were mainly bigger than the other KC staffords at the time and tended to get noticed at shows
