Rabies vaccines/ Tags

I was just curious what some of the laws were where different people live in regards to Rabies vaccines and Tags.

Here, in my county, only a liscensed vet can administer the Rabies vaccine. The vet issues a certificate showing proof of the vaccine with the lot number. If it is not for dog's very first rabies vax, it is counted as a 3year vaccine. You then have to purchase a county rabies tag, which is $5 if they're fixed, and $25 if they're intact. You have to renew this once a year.

Is it similar in ya'lls parts?

 

in California,USA where i live only a vet can administer the Rabies vaccinee and you pay whatever they ask for and then they just give you a tag, and if the dog never had a Rabies Vaccinee Then it is only good for a year then the 2nd Vaccinee is good for three years hope that answer what you asked

 

In my area anyone can give a rabies shot so long as the dog doesn't leave state lines or doesn't have a history of biting. If the dog leaves outside the state or has bitten anything, it needs a vet-given shot (unless the laws have changed).

 

Do ya'll have to get a county rabies tag?

 

no they give me a tag that says my vets name and my dogs Rabies# thats all

 

I believe proof of vaccination is mandatory in all states.

If you give your own rabies shots the kit comes complete with a tag & a certificate.

If you get one at the vet's you get a tag & certificate there as well.

Since we started showing/pulling, we now vaccinate through the vet. But before that I gave all my own shots, to include rabies.

 

Surprisingly, we have no laws about that in the county where I'm at. In OK, you can give your own rabies vaccinations, but I'm thinking different cities might require you to show a rabies tag.

 

In my county, you pay for the shot, by a licensed vet only, and get a tag. It's your choice, 1 year or 3 year. I do 1 since we have so many mosquitoes. If you go to the vets office it's like 50.00 or the pet vac that travels for 5.00.

 

Rabies is a virus, it is transmitted through saliva. It has nothing to do with mosquitoes.

Heartworm is a parasite. It is transmitted via mosquitoes. Dogs should be on a monthly oral preventative for heartworm.

I know. They are on Ivermec. That's just what a vet from up north told me when I brought Jordan here. I think he might have meant hot weather. He was only vacinated every 3 there, but when I got him to the south, every 1.

 

We need to get it from a certified Vet. Just every 3 years, unless it's the first one, then a 1 year. No county thing from my knowledge, just a regular rabies. I got to the rabies clinic they hold, and it's $8.00, whether they are s/n or not.

 

Hmmm in Colorado I guess it just depends on what vet you go to. There's two major manufacturer's for the Rabies Vaccine that I can think of, Pfizer and Fort Dodge. They both offer 2 variations of the Rabies Vaccine. The one year Rabies, that once administered, is good for one year, haha. The other being the Three Year Rabies, once administered, is good for three years. Either are accepted as long as it's current and you just have to check with your vet on which they offer, or if they have both, which works better for you. I really like the 3 year Rabies, it's usually the same price or not much more, and it's lasting longer so you're not re-vaccinating every year! Also nice if your dog is prone to vaccine reactions. The most important thing about the 3 year vaccine is if your dog gets it, his shot can NOT go past due if you want the 3 year to be given again. If it does go past due, even a day or so, the vet requires the dog to recieve the 1 year vaccine again. And there's no such thing as a 2 year Rabies. Don't know why for sure, but there isn't one at all.

Oh, and here (and probably elsewhere) the vet assistants or techs can give a rabies shot, it's just that the vet needs to sign the rabies certificate.

Now, we also have this new thing where you have to license your dog with your county ($15/yr fixed, $30/yr intact). Completely different than a rabies certificate (which is required by law, not your county) but your vet has to sign the papers and the dog can't be licensed with the county without his current rabies shot! Agh.
