introduce him to the chain while in the house. it should be a light puppy chain any so just show him a piece of it and let him get used to it. clip the piece to him and leave it on him supervised then once hes used to the chain and not fighting it anyone put him on the one outside and give the pup a treat.

but personally i just put them on the chain and let them work through it themselves. ignore the tantrums and eventually they'll calm down.

i do the same.. and only take the pup off when its calm so i don't encourage the tantrum.

ahh tru tru thnx heaps i cut a small piece of chain for him and tied it round his neck like a collar and he got used to that pretty quick... now I've cut a 3rd of the chain and i let him drag it round and i give him food then take it off when he is unsupervised i think when he gets full used to that ill see how he goes tied up and let him work it our like you say.. he is making progress looks promising

10-12 weeks old is kinda young to be put on a chain IMO. Get em use to the collar and leash first...if you can't make a pen then go buy one!

Congrats. Like Flipside suggested, 10 to 12 weeks is a little young for a chain. At that age, you'll probably do more harm than good with it. Get the dog used to a decent, appropriately sized collar and leash first. Get the dog a crate, and if the pup has to be out for a while, a safe, well-built kennel is the way to go. I find that if you go half-assed in the beginning and a pup gets used to stressing and escaping, you'll have that same problem for years to come. Take it easy, do it right, and you save a lot of time, money and frustration long-term....trust me on that. Also, keep in mind, that at ten to twelve weeks, pups aren't good at being alone. They're pack animals, being alone too often too young often produces stressed, anxious dogs. So, at least until the pup gets the hang of things, keep people at least within earshot.

i start off with a 15ft light gauge cable under supervision. once they understand they're being held back by the cable and learn to navigate with it on, then the transition to a chain is easy. like highcoast said bad habits early on will follow the dog through it's life. once they learn how to escape they know it's always an option so don't let the pup best you or you'll be in for a long ride.

16 weeks is a good age to put a pup on a chain for the first time...also use a light chain to avoid any strain or stress on a young growing pup. Another good idea is a nice overhead cable set-up...light-weight and good room to move back & forth.

I have found putting a pup loose in a pen till around 4 or 5 months, then introducing them to the chain in the pen works for me. I can take them from the pen and put them in the camp with no problem. If you cant do that, then you just got to take a weekend and break him in yourself.

Put the pup on a light cable and let it learn what its for. Its going to throw a fit but with alittle time its well get use to it.

you can put a small piece of chain on them and let them drag it around . this is also good to teach them to walk on a lead rope . it helps them to get used to the chain or lead being around there neck .

yeah old goat thats what i do

just enough to drag a couple inches behind the pup and just heavy enough for the pup to move normaly with out struggeling or straining

One question: when you have just 1 dog why you want that this dog will live on chain?

every time i train a puppy to be on the chain, i place a spring in between two chains so that if he tugs away, it quickly tugs back and breaks him out of it. i also associate positive things to being chained up, such as letting him pull me to a pile of chicken. the chain becomes nothing after awhile. hope all goes well and i hope that helps a bit

Yes! Thats what I would do they have got to have a light chain though, otherwise the weight will scare them (not completly sure why i guess it pulls on their throat:confused:, but my dog did that) and cause them to have tantrums.:lipstickpitbullf:

Great advice above....i just wait them out...if he know's every-time he throw's a fit on the chain you will take him off he never learn...so just wait him out..give him a big chew bone while he's on the chain..he might settle down then...jus don't keep giveing into him.....best of luck........
