    JamesT,

I no longer own any APBTs. Although I am not against owning APBTs (or I wouldn't have started this topic), for the last decade I have been working on the development of a breed known as a Swinford K9 (formerly known as the Swinford Bandog / Swinford Bandogge), and at this stage of our program that is where we put all of our focus. All dogs originate from selective breeding of traits...and all breeds are the same species. All breeds are maintained via the selection of traits that define them. This was true during the development of the APBT itself back when it was known as the "Bull-n-Terrier" and it is still true today. The breed we work with is developed as a Family Companion Guardian.

    Okeefes Pit Boss,

The original program was started back in the 1960s using several APBT dogs owned by Jack Kelly that were put on top of working class mastiffs. One in particular was a 2xW named Bob Tail Buddy. Other dogs owned by Jack were also used.

  3. Lee do you know Kelly Crossin?

If you are asking do I know of someone named "Kelly Crossin" then the answer is no.

If you are asking do I know for sure that Jack Kelly did some "crossin" with his dogs to mastiffs, then the answer is yes. The mastiffs that used were owned by John B. Swinford, DVM, and the offspring was the foundation of a new breed referred to as the Swinford Bandog (Swinford Bandogge). The dogs produced were NOT misrepresented as APBT and did NOT become part of the APBT gene pool as they reported the breedings openly. Some were even listed in the SDJ.

Ha, that was us and our "ghetto van". That dog's name is Gotti, a GREAT candidate for the breed for PP for the fact that he was friendly, yet indifferent to people (didn't need to lick your face off) and fought with no mercy. I liked that dog a lot.

A question for Mr. Robinson. Are your Swinford stock now breeding "true" to type? Or do you still need English Mastiff and Apbt gene pools to occasionally "dip" into? In your litters of Swinford to Swinford have you achieved your ideal "type" yet? I know you know what I am asking but you may want to elaborate further for those with no Knowledge of how "pure" breeds and lines of breeds were and are created. Thanks in advance. I know your reply will be educational and informative. I'm strictly apbt but I have learned good knowledge from breeders of many breeds and lines of dog as well as breeders and competitors of performance horses and beef and dairy cattle. A person can never know too much.

ive allways been taught that these dogs are good at your task but because of the bsl shit it has been frowned upon by the fraternity. but all the dogs i can see that you have in your program and the system you seem too have set is working and more power to you for it. yo seem to have a solid program with solid dogs and i enjoy reading your insights in what you do with your dogs. proper prtection work is something that has and will allways caught my attantion as with this day and age is a great way to work your dog. please continue to show us how you work your dogs, and def the new one as it goes through its progresion.
    thanks.

Working dogs are selected on the basis of performance. Performance is defined by an ability to excell. The traits one should desire are the traits necessary to perform. "Purity" has more to do with lines than breeds. That is why not all APBT are equal. If a breed was truly "pure" than all specimens of the breed would be defined by the same traits, and that simply isn't true today. At one time it was.

As far as do we occationally have to "dip into" the APBT or Mastiffs...I am not against such as long as the "dip" is only to dogs that can also bring the desired traits to the table. At this time, the dogs in our program are breeding very consistently...but honest breeders will continue to look for the best and the worst in order to continue to progress. Here is an article I wrote some time ago that explains more of my belief...and I think many people here will be interested in a few of the quotes it contains. Our Breeding Philosophy
