The Buster story appears in Strattons book along with a couple of grainy b&w pics.:dogstare:

True but what of the other Tosas that have fought towards a similar time with an apbt and won? Now of course the old addage of a the talented bigger dog will win against the talented smaller dog. At the very least Tano stayed in and he didn't quit. The rules were under the Akita prefecture rules where once both dogs were released, both dogs would fight until either a dog decides to quit, by the handler picking up their dog, or one dog being killed. Tano unfortunately got dispatched by gr. ch. tito, but he didn't quit, so what is your justification for calling the dog a cur? Just because a dog has lost does not mean he is a cur.

The saying is- "A good big dog will beat a great small dog most of the time."
Anyway, I'm really sick of talking tosas, and personally I could really give a fuck about them, or any other wanna-be game-dog. so, if it's your thing, have fun looking in to them. I'm out

For someone that appreciates game dogs, you'd think that they'd be a bit more open minded and actually do research on the various breeds before passing judgement. You can feed and do what you want, but for the future, do not assume a breed is not worthy before actually doing research or attempting to learn about the breed. Also for your information, my "thing" is any and all breeds that has heart.

Ha ha, that's settled it for me!! Its either the 108lb pit or the indian bull terrier that gummed a doberman half to death and had his ear burned off with a lighter for the trouble!! Jesus, you couldn't make it up and I am sure these people are serious!!!! Thanks Davey :D

I'd like to correct you on that, tano was a European tosa and the match was in Romania I think. Also tano didn't die from blood loss. Apparantly tano died from a brain haemorrhage he sustained while shakin Tito. Tano was winning the match up until then. I've spoken to a dog fighter from japan on another forum, he owns both tosas and pits. He uses catchweight bulldogs to train his young tosas, but says he wouldn't match a heavyweight tosa with the bulldog because the size advantage would be too much for the bulldog. They sometimes match lightweight tosas with large pitbulls and the outcomes are varied, usually the tosa is victorious. He agrees that the apbt is the gamest of dogs, but the lighter tosas are closely matched to the bigger bulldogs in terms of gameness. He also states that they do test there tosas for gameness behind closed doors.

The way I was told, Tano was an Japanese import that had 6 contracted wins prior towards being shipped out. When he was shipped to romania, he gained another 4 wins when he was matched into apbts before the match with Tito was set up. I was also told that Tano died during the match because he got an arterial cut and bled to death, but before he died he wouldn't stop shaking tito.

If I'm correct he died due to smashing his head on the concrete floor while shaking tito, tano produced chico who defeated plenty of bulldogs, and other breeds such as dogos, kangals etc

That would make more sense from the version I heard. The version I heard was Tano was shaking Tito and was on top but during Tito wound up hitting an artery and as the match progressed, Tano began to slow down more and more and eventually died from blood loss. However, that story that I had heard of was the version reported, not from the owner's mouth. If you've spoken to the owner and that is what he has said, I am more inclined to believe your story. I'm surprised that a draw or no contest wasn't issued since in Japan, owners normally agree to a no contest in a freak accident like this. I know of one match where one of the tosas got his rear leg stuck between the bars and snapped it and he was the dog that was ahead, but both owners out of respect and honor agreed to a draw. I recall that Tano vs Tito was for $3,000, which is a substantial amount so I guess the money may have been a factor?

Most people here have not seen a real Tosa, it's ok. I know what a real Tosa is capable of, as well as the seriousness of the Tosa matches, not the Sumo rules conducted to entertain the foreign tourists towards the Tosa province. These matches are more than just about money or sport, they are about honor and are conducted under strict rituals and guidelines. I don't think in the history of Tosa matching that any handler or dogman has ever even though of using rubs, steroids, etc. since it is seen as dishonorable.
