I came across this interesting read and thought to share it with you:

    The Alaunt - Home

The tabs "The Butcher's Alaunt" and "The Alaunt Veantre" are of particular interest in shedding some light on the origin of the bull baiting bulldogs of old, which we accept as one half of the component types that created the APBT.

The other two tabs also offer good information although not directly related to APBT history. A good read nevertheless.

Finally if I have placed this thread incorrectly, I apologize and ask that someone may relocate it to a more suitable location. Thank you.

I think it's absolutely suitable right here. It certainly is history, no question about that. Agreeable to some......not to others and isn't that what much of history is all about?

I'm leaving it where it is, as far as my input goes.

Nice share XLR8, I believe the spanish alaunt often refered to as spanish bulldog is a type of old molosser that looked like a large bulldog and contributed to the Dogos argentinas genetic make up as well as some of the cuban fighting dogs of the 50s as mentioned by Pete Sparks...
Alaunt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alano Español - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dogo Argentino - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cordoba Fighting Dog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Similar molosser bulldogs to the cfd^^^ were being fought in Cubas heyday back when Cuba was the original Las Vegas, back when the Ittalian mafia retreated to the big island for leasure and gambling before the Castro issues and they moved shop to the desert in Nevada... Pete Sparks and the Cuban Livewire B.G. took the
Hunky dog and beat the cuban champion and Pete Sparks claimed to be a big white gamedog that was rough and fairly game for a big one also... Its interesting to know that the spanish bulldogs were being fought in their own circuts also and I wonder if any made thru Castros culling...
Cimarrón Uruguayo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The history of this Cimmaron dog is similar to the spanish(DeSoto) leaving behind wardogs at the catahoula lakes in Louisiana... The Native Americans bred with their redwolves to help create ameicas oldest type/breed, the Catahoula ...
The same thing happend in Florida when the spanish brought cattle, horses and dogs and abandon them... Back to the roots of natural selection and survival of the fittest..
In both Florida and Louisiana the spanish left behind dogs and I am sure that they just didnt bring any old dog but the best of the best which could have been the spanish alaunt... Both states boast to have some tye of Bulldog in their pride and joy hounds, the catahoula and the cracker curs... I am sure some of type of these molosser bulldogs are in north carolinas state dog also the plott hound...
Catahoula Cur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Black Mouth Cur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An oldtimer said that when a bulldog quit a fight it was labeled a cur because it was not true to the type they were looking for and the name cur was shunned...
The men that have raised curs for the last hundred years plus know that their dogs are far from quitters and are valued for their grit and gameness on the hunt...
Ive also heard of dogmen calling the type that catches a bulldog and the type that bays a cur dog even if they are from the same litter...
I believe to understand some of these types or early american dogs also helps understand the possibilities of the development of our modern day bulldogs that stem from differnt types and not some ancient purebred like we would like to believe... ANY THOUGHT OUT THEORIES or COMMENTS ARE VALUED...

I was under the impression that dna had been done on many breeds, hopefully not to exclude our apbt, and the chihuahua had been found to be the oldest "american"breed recorded through time, going through the native american history, back to Southern America, and the ancient civilizations we no little about.

interesting concepts and fun to learn about.

Thank you for the share McCoy, very interesting indeed...Ecspeacially the Cuban Bloodhound bulldog that Theodore Roosevelt wrote about...
This helps further my theory of a southern bulldog that might date back to the spanairds imports of Desotos time, and these dogs might have been an unknown catalyst to the more well known documented bulldogs that we are fimilar with... I am sure one of these types ended up in our modern apbts, whether it be way back in Lightners grandfathers days or if it was as current as the new era "redboy" dogs of odd origin... The English documented their history, while other cultures of spanish descent might not have... The stories and pedigrees were treasured to the english and the extensive pedigrees were of great value, to where in old world the sire was the only one on the pedigree if they kept one at all... We know of the Brittish Isles Imports but rarely do we seek the catalyst which I believe might have been a type of spanish bulldog ... WHO KNOWS??? Any other links on spanish fighting dogs and their history would be great...
Thanks again for your research McCoy...
