How Can You Test To See How Much Prey Drive Your Dog Has? Would Trapping A Opsooum Or Coon And Letting Him Have At It Be A Little Too Extreme??

  2. I wouldnt do that them animals might have diseases.

I agree with RawDawg raccoons, opossoms, etc. carry a lot of different diseases.

Why do you want to test this anyway? The only legit reason I could think of is if you wanted to get a bird, rabbit, etc. and wanted to make sure the dog wouldn't eat it at first chance.

I usually buy a bunch of rats at a pet shop. Depending on the dog and its age will determine the size of the rats. If I have 4 rats, I will put them in 2 boxes and put the box on the lawn. I let the dog investigate the box. If they are really interested in whats in it they usually will tear it open and set the rats free. Then you will see what the dog decides to do. My dogs will chase down the rats and continue the chase even if the rat fights back, which they usually do. As the dog grows I will graduate to rabbits. It sounds a bit cruel, but I do let the dog consume the prey after they have caught and killed it. My dogs are on a raw food or BARF diet, so consuming the whole animal is ok.

That is the things HSUS dreams are made of. What do you hope to accomplish by this? Nothing good will come out of it besides being able to skip a meal for your dog. I dont have a problem with hunting with our dogs, I go coon and rabbit hunting all the time, but its not fair to trap the animal and throw it at your dog. Make both of you do some work for it.

ooohhh! Rabbits are cute. Rats and hogs are ugly. But wittle rabbits? If it's cute I like to leave it alone....

So If I Am In The Woods With My Dog And We Come Across A Coon And He Takes It Upson Himself To "get Him Some" Then Its Ok. But If I Catch The Coon First And Then Turn The Coon Loose In An Open Field Is Wrong. Right?

My dog has never gone hunting before and i was kinda thinking that maybe i could give him a trial before we go in the woods and see what he is made of. dont want him tucking tail and hauling a$$ in the heat of battle

Its just that I have never done anything like this before with my dogs and i am just not sure how they will react. Yes they are game bred, and have good drive, but I am just kinda wondering if they will turn "on" when they need to. having never been put in that situation before.

Nearly all dogs will chase a cat, a rabbit, or a squirrel. Chasing a rabbit also doesnt make them "turn on".

No it is not extreme..... Pitbull Vs opsooum PItbull vs racoon... extreme?, HARDLY!!!! Youre dog might end up with an extreamly bad case of RABIES!! However it is idiotic and crule. if you want extreme go bungy jumping or something. if you want to know how mutch pray drive youre dog has pick an activity and work youre dog. If he does have a intence drive You will know.

why start now? Letting you dogs chase rabbit, squirrel or other rodents to see what they are made of isnt going to show you much. If your looking into a gamedog for coon, skunk etc. get a fell terrier.

I hunt coyote and fox with my dogs all the time.

Its very legal in my state and VERY exciting to say the least.

Its best to catch them in the den before they bolt.

Absoultly nothing wrong with hunting yore dog however there is somthing wrong with setting up a death match between a pitbull and a animal that is obvisly outmatched.that is about as extreem as a fight to the death between a human and a trout.
