I just want to share with everyone how the law is about APBT in Spain. For owning this type of dog you´ll have to get a License. And it take all this:

You need to get administrative leave granted by the municipal or state authority, in our case can be obtained from the relevant District Board to which we belong. And we must meet the following requirements:

Be an adult. (presenting a photocopy of I.D)

Failure to submit a criminal record with regard to certain cases such as crimes against property, morality, sexual freedom, murder ... To prove to be a certificate of criminal ajuntar obtained in the Criminal History Registry (street Novitiate), and affidavit had not been sanctioned by this Law

Have physical and psychological ability to own one of these animals. To obtain certification in any medical center such as the Centers for renewal of driving license or gun permit.

Accreditation of entering into an insurance of civil liability for damage to third parties valued at 120,000 €.

Once obtained all the permits the City Council granted us LICENSE TO BE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DOGS. This license must be renewed every 5 years. We will enter potentially dangerous dogs in a registry established for that purpose "municipal registration of potentially dangerous dogs", which will give us a certificate that is inscribed on it. To enroll you must carry identification microchip, and a veterinary certificate showing that he's in good health and must annually renew the certificate (can be done in the query).

    What are potentially dangerous dogs?

1 Those in the following breeds and their crosses: Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu and Akita Inu.

2 nd All dogs that do not belong to the previous races but fulfills all or most of the following characteristics:

Strong musculature, powerful-looking, robust, athletic setup, agility, stamina and endurance.

    Strong character and high value.

    Short hair.

Chest circumference between 60 and 80 cm, height at withers 50 to 70 cm and weighing over 44 lbs.

Massive head, cuboid, robust, with large, wide skull and muscular and bulging cheeks. Mandibles large and strong, rugged face, wide and deep.

    Thick neck, muscular and short.

Massive chest, broad big, deep, arched ribs and loin muscular and short.

Parallel forelegs, straight and sturdy and very muscular hindquarters, relatively long legs form a moderate angle.

3 rd All those who have defaulted animals attacking animals or people before or who show a markedly aggressive. Being certified as provided by a veterinarian approved by the competent authority.

What security measures we have if we have potentially dangerous dogs?

1 .- We will have in public places a copy of the administrative license and the registration of potentially dangerous dogs.
2 .- It is compulsory a muzzle in public places. Just as the use of leash or chain of less than 2 meters and not being able to stretch not carry more than one dog of this type per person.
3 .- The potentially dangerous animals are in plots, houses, decks, patios or similar shall be bound unless they are having the relevant security measures in height, cladding and surface to protect people or animals that approach.
4 .- The breeders of these animals must at all times have the security conditions necessary to maintain these animals.
5 .- The theft or loss of a potentially dangerous dog must be served by the person in charge of the municipal register of potentially dangerous dogs within 48 hours after it is aware of these facts.

I really would love to have your opinions. Because I think a little part of the license is fine, but the most part specially the part of what makes a dog potentially dangerous it´s really stupid.(just let you know that it cost around 300€ to get your license).

Thank You for posting this information for our members in Spain! BSL anywhere affects all of us by promoting false sterotypes.

Would you like us to create a laws, news, etc subforum in this forum as we have in the main forum to post items that affect others outside the US? Posters could add the country it applies to in the title for emphesis. It might help members identify information/laws that directly affect them.

    Thanks for any input!

I guess these stupid laws are going to be everywhere after while. This from the country that has the running of the bulls and bullfights, which I don't oppose, but I'd think they would have more dog freedoms there too.Guess not:rolleyes:

Or ever the German Shepherd dog, what it makes around the 80% of the dog bites in Spain and has kill more people than the APBT just to make an example.

Is not just that, Spain has a really big tradition with dogs. In the XV century mastiffs had to eat before people because they were really important to everyone. And the old spanish bulldog(now extinct) was the best companion royalty.
So if the dogs were part of the tradition, like the bullfights (wich ones I really don´t like because they are brutal), we our contry its not saving the dogs rights anymore? Stupid...

As you can see in this picture is a old spanish bulldog type dog in the Velazquez`s picture, dog were part of our culture.

hola gamebull! thank you for the informaton on bsl in spain :)

this dog isn't an alano espanol. ;) it is a "german alano"; back in the 1980s, a few german breeders (r. sewerin, th. baumgartner and others) wanted to recreate the "historical alano" by breeding perro de presa mallorquin, presa canario, cane corso and to a lesser amount, the dogo argentino together ("using the 'sons' of the historical alano to recreate the 'father'" was their motto). some people also believe that apbt, boxer and rottweiler were crossed in, too. they didn't breed for looks but for working ability (protection, hunting boar, watchdog qualities...). today, there are 3 alano clubs, the ac, the avd and afd.

the pictured dog is carmen bentaiga, also known as sheila (de la arena). she died in 2007.

It is call Alano Español in the FCI, but you might right on what you are saying, because the historical alano was extinc I know that. I didn´t know all that, what I read was very different from what you tell me. I can do some research and we can open up a treah about that so we can share opinion and information about the alano :)

    BA08/15 Big Dog

that would be a good idea ;)

ps: I don't say that there isn't an alano espanol (fci) - but sheila wasn't one, nor are most of the "alanos" here in germany.

This law is totally outdated, if you read it carefully any shortaired dog that weights more than 20kg is a "potentially dangerous dog".

The law was made when some dog atacks happened here in Spain almost 10 years ago, there was a big "pit bull breed" boom, and everyone and their mom abandoned their dogs, lots of "kennels" or peddlers that appeared on the pitbull boom did the same.
