About 30 minutes ago a very close friend of mine was picking up her nieces from elementary school and a little boy ran out in front of her Dodge Ram truck, and she hit him. I called her right after it happened and a woman who witnessed told me to call 911 a child had been hit, which I did. I called her frantically for the next 20 minutes, knowing of course she couldn't answer my call. I just talked to her a couple minutes ago and she's devastated- the little boy's foot and lower leg were completely crushed. She said there were compound fractures everywhere. She held him and rocked him until paramedics arrived. He asked her if she was a mommy- she said yes I'm a mommy and he asked her if she could be his mommy right now and she told him yes I'll be your mommy. He's on his way to the hospital right now, and her husband is driving her home because she wouldn't drive after that. She had over 24 feet of skidmarks, wasn't speeding and witnesses were stating she did all she could- he just dashed out. She was able to talk to his mother before they went to the hospital and she said he walked home every day and she had to constantly remind him to look both ways- he was just being a little boy. My friend wasn't charged with anything.
Please pray for his comfort right now. He's in so much pain as I write this. And if you have time hope for comfort for my friend- she's one of the most kindhearted people I know and she is completely torn apart by this. Such a sad thing this happened today. :(

Very sorry to hear about that LB. Hopefully that little boy will fully recover.

Hopefully your friend will overcome this tragedy as well.

I had to say my last goodbyes to a friend that passed yesterday. :(

Both families have my prayers.even though it was a total accident from what you described a person can not help but feel like it was their fault.tell your friend she did all she could and to take all that energy she has about feeling bad and turn it into prayer for that little boy,it will do them both a world of good.

Well thank goodness updates will be easy- she came over here to visit for awhile and it turns out her mother in law was the paramedic at the scene. She has been in the hospital all evening keeping us informed. It turns out the leg and foot were not completely crushed- it just looked that way because all the bones were exposed from the tire stripping all the skin. It turns out (thank God) all bones are intact and none were broken, but he is going to need extensive skin grafting- most of the tissue was stripped from the foot and lower leg just below the knee. He is in surgery now to clean it (the wound was almost completely packed with gravel and dirt) and to begin the first skin grafts which they will be removing from his rear.
Turns out he is an 11 year old boy who had been trying to race home before his mom found out he'd walked again. He was supposed to be on the bus and had no idea how to properly cross the street. I'm pretty miffed the school had never caught onto this or tried to stop him from doing it- no elementary schoolage child should be allowed to dash off campus and down the side of a very busy road like he was doing.

Well thats a relife to hear, skin grafts are rough but at least the bones were ok.i tell ya if i was the parents of that child i would be down there raising hell, and if i was your friend i would be right along side them.now i am not for suing but this is one case where that school should be sued and sued hard for that boys medical bills and for the pain he is going to have to go through,it was that schools place to make sure he was on that bus and not dashing off if the parents were not able to be there because of work or that.

I agree and the plot thickens as well...we found out he actually got on the bus yesterday, but the busdriver made him get off for being unruly. I wasn't aware busdrivers had such authority?

Thats Crazy...I didn't think so either...looks like what we have here is a failure to communicate.

If I was that childs parents I would have some ears ringing at that school.

I'm going to be the odd man out here but ... since working at the school I might be able to lend a little insight here.

YES, drivers are allowed to put kids off the bus, BUT their parents are supposed to be notified & are supposed to pick them up. I'd bet ole junior just took off like a swamp rabbit once he got off the bus before his mom could be notified b/c he didn't want to get into trouble for getting tossed.

As for the kid running down the road, we have no authority what they do when they are off campus. At my school the principal, ass't principal & a guard are out there to make sure the kids get on the bus, but what w/ the sheer number of kids out there, you can't keep up w/ everyone. It's impossible.

And as I said before, if he hit the ground running there would have been nothing any of the staff could have done. Do you think they're going to chase some kid down? Please. In today's day in age that would have been a lawsuit waiting to happen. If the staff or guards can't corral them, we just write down who is is & what they did & wait to catch up w/ them the next day.

I feel sorry for the kid & hope he gets better. But had he had enough manners to ride the bus like a civil child instead of an unruly heathen he wouldn't be in this mess.

(BTW, before anyone cries foul, I say "unruly heathen" b/c it usually takes a LOT to get tossed off a bus. If it's just the usual kid stuff they're often just written up & other disipline is employed.)

Great usage of a great line...
But yeah, when I was in school, we weren't allowed off the bus unless it was our stop. We couldn't even get off at a friend's stop. They were pretty strict, and if you were causing troubles, first you had to sit in the front seat, and if you were still causing problems, it was principal's office the next day.

That might have worked when we were kids & children still has respect for their elders, but it doesn't work now. Now a days there aren't enough "front seats" for all of the problem children. You should see the behaviour of these kids on school buses nowadays. Some of it would shock you.

And BTW, please don't think I am taking up for the school since I work for them. My own stepson got kicked off for the rest of the year for punching a kid on the bus & I think they school did the right thing. IMO if he can't behave on a bus, he doesn't need to be on it.

I got kicked off the bus twice in my life...The first time I got in a fight with a brother and his sister....
The next time I was standing up for the Bus Driver because some little punk kid wouldn't listen to her. She didn't want to give my name into the Principal, but his parents complained so her hands were tied. Though she must have told the Principal that it was in defense of her authority, because when he told me I was kicked off the bus, he apologized a bunch, and asked if I would need a ride or anything. lol. So, yeah, I know how disrespectful the kids have gotten.

such an unfortunate situation. it's definitely hard to be logical and to have a clear, concise understanding of how to handle certain situations that have such emotional complications. but that is why He and your friends are blessed to know you and your friend and vice versa. my thoughts and prayers. God Bless. :)

Well i can understand that,a child has to be well behaved on the school but toherwise they are liable to cause a accident when a driver is trying to focus on the road and such,so that i understand.

what i don't understand is why they would let a child run loose in a traffic area,to me there is no reason regardless the amount of kids that they can not keep them safe, even if it is not ''in your job description'' wich seems to be a great statement now a days.i know the schools are way over run and everybody there is stretched way to thin, but there is never a excuse in my opinion for not keeping 100% on top of the safety of the children, hell thats what we all pay taxes for to begin with give them a good education and keep them safe.

Been in a very similar situation. Hopefully the little boy will be just fine and will make it thru his surgeries without too much permanent damage. Maybe it is different in my state, BUT, the school is responsible for the child til the minute they walk into their house. It does not matter whether the kid rides the bus or walks (bikes), whatever. Unless they are picked up from school. Even if they ride the bus, the school is responsible til that kid is inside the house. The bus driver cannot legally kick them off the bus after it has left the school (unfortunetly it has happened here a few times) but if they are still at school they can be taken off and parents called. If the kid bolted, as stated, the school is still responsible. Hard lessons for all involved.

Nah- I wouldn't call you the odd man out. I am shocked everyday at what parents have allowed their children to become. The behavior is in the pisser and instead of correcting it the parents just take the kid down to the drug pusher -I mean pediatrician- and have them put on amphetamines. My opinion is the adults are responsible for the children's crappy behavior, so now we adults have to work overtime to correct it. Principals should stay on campus until every last child has gone home, and the busdriver should have had a teacher march the kid right up to him/her, and disciplinary action should have been taken right then and there.

The kid had someone somewhere in his life that instilled something pretty profound in him, though. I left this part out before because I didn't want to bring up religion...but as most children would have called out for their mothers exclusively, this child also said "I need my Jesus. I need my Jesus." over and over and quoted Bible verses incuding Psalm 23 verbatim. Most heathens don't go there. ;)
