Please Educate/Help me. I am new to the TRUE APBT willing to learn!

Discussion in 'Introductions' started by Gamedog Rob, Jan 23, 2017.

  1. My name is Rob,
I'm from just outside of Chicago. I have been trying to research like crazy APBT as a breed. The TRUE APBT "Game" dogs.

What I am having trouble is finding REAL Quality APBT GAMEDOG Breeders in my area. (Illinois) I don't even mind having to drive out of state if I have to just hopefully not TOO many states over.

I am looking at owing a female 30-50lb TRUE APBT. I have several questions like... I plan on making this my personal house dog companion. Do game bread APBT make ok house dogs or are they truly only meant for kennel/yard dogs? I used to work with and own larger working German Shepherds in the past in Schutzhund....and not all made good house pets. I almost always owned a male and a female.

Providing I can actually find ONE to start. Someday I'd like to own 2. Is it even possible to live with a Male ABPT and a Female ABPT together in one house?

I personally train Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing....so the idea of a GAME dog is appealing to me. A dog that has courage.......and one that I can train with truly inspires me.

Any suggestions or direction anyone could point me in would be wonderful.

    Thank you for your time!

    Rob-

Welcome. Game bred dogs are everywhere. They are not all that hard to find.

As far as house pets, the answer is both yes and no, as it will depend on that particular dog and the effort/time you put in him or her. Pretty much like the schutzhund dogs you have experienced and that experience is very transferrable. Some dogs are just so high strung, so much prey drive they just do not make great pets. They make great service dogs or great working dogs just not great pets. And then the very next high strung, highly prey driven dog will be the perfect house pet. That makes no sense except when you factor 'it depends on the individual dog'.

I have never had luck with two living together. Many have. Again it will determine on the dogs and what time/effort you put in them. For the most part my dogs lack social skills with other dogs. I have had a couple who acted like they would get along but I did not really trust them to be together.

    Good luck.

What Slim said is spot on. I was always under the impression that there is a huge amount of good quality game bred dogs in Chicago. I think for your purposes as a house pet any true APBT would be more than enough dog for you.

Slim is spot on as always. And I totally agree with Box, the windy city is full of bulldogs. Look around and you'll find one.

Do you know what a game bred pit bulldog is? They are not show ponies or the type to go play with at the dog park.

That's also the case with ''ordinary'' bred Pit Bulls, doggy park is a NONO.

Agree with Slim on all accounts. Just take your time, it took me almost 3 years to find a dog. Once i figured out what type of dog i was after (had one years ago) and after years of research, i found breeders who had the lines i was after and would sell me one. Knowing what i know now i am very thankful that i had too wait and had to go through all the things i went through to find the type of dog i was seeking and am even more thankful for the people i now know in these dogs.

If possible, try and find a mentor, there should be plenty of bulldog folks where you are..

  11. Good luck finding that pup.it should be a real eye opener! Nice dogs out there.

I think you need to ask yourself or find out the difference. Do you want a American staff/show type APBT? Or do you want a game bred pit bulldog? There is a reason why you see game bred pit bulldogs running the chains they usually don't play to well with others.

You can go to tom garner kennels and bobby bullyson hall kennels and get a nice 1

  16. If you have the love for the dog, you will learn to handle him, or you wont. Even the most experienced dog men have kennel accidents. Just raise em your way, be alert, and be prepaired. enjoy the ride

Do your research and learn. This kind of "upgrade" is not like upgrading to a newer model car.

1200 was my first street bike, Kwaka ZRX1200r. I rode dirtbikes like a maniac when I was a preteen to teenager. Gotta be reeeeeeaaal careful! Take it slow. Don't be in a rush to be Valentino Rossi, The Hayden Bros, or Eddie Lawson! Be happy with what you have and do YOU! Don't try to impress anyone but yourself and you MIGHT succeed. Motorbikes aren't for everybody!! Especially superbikes and supersports. Some have it, most don't....

Now take everything I said and apply it to dogs. AGK and Slim hit the nail with a sledgehammer! Gamebred dogs can be an eye opener if you not ready. <----- UNDERSTATEMENT
