A regular morning romp through the yard turned into a nightmare for a young Chihuahua named Buster when he was suddenly attacked and taken by a wild coyote in the suburban town of Littleton, Colo. But thanks to two brave pit bull neighbors, the dog survived the frightening encounter and is on the road to a recovery.

Four-year-old Buster had just returned from his morning walk with mom Jodi Robinette on July 31, but wanted a little more play time outside. Having already checked the surroundings of her back yard, Robinette felt it safe to let Buster burn off some active energy while she kept an eye out from her living room couch. But not even 30 seconds later, Robinette was back on her feet.

"I heard him scream like I've never heard an animal scream before," Robinette tells PEOPLEPets.com. "I instantly knew that an animal got him."

After spotting a tail turn the corner of her house, Robinette sprinted to the front of the yard and saw the coyote running off with Buster in his mouth. While Robinette was in pursuit, a pair of pit bulls were on neighborhood watch and ran toward the coyote, on a mission to rescue the poor dog from the vicious abductor. Realizing he was outnumbered, the coyote released Buster and ran off.

"The pits followed my dog underneath a bush, guarding him," Robinette recalls. "[They] lay next to him, licked him and protected him."

Robinette, a neurosurgery coordinator, wrapped the gravely injured canine in a towel and rushed him to Columbine Animal Hospital. Immediately treated for pain and shock, Buster was scheduled for surgery on Aug. 2 to repair damage to his chest wall on both sides. Dr. Lee Bregitzer performed the operation, and is happy to report that Buster is well on the road to recovery — thanks to the quick thinking of the neighboring dogs.

They were "guardian angels for her dog," Dr. Bregitzer says, "disguised as pit bulls."

Robinette has nothing but praise and gratitude for the heroic canines, who stepped in quicker than she ever could have.

"[They] were looking out for Buster's best interest against the coyote," Robinette says. "They were looking out for my dog."

lol that was touching & all.......little did she know them dogs didnt give a shit about being heroic lol, they wanted that coyote!

about them lickin the little dog & what not, ive heard about good bulldogs bein good with little dogs and non APBT's. also about some bulldogs not scratchin into a "down" dog. this chihuahua must have been "down" after something like that happenening.

or shit, who knows maybe they were protecting the damn dog lol

im telling ya any big dog comes aorund , my female goes nuts reaady to go. If a small dog runs up she is cool calm and colective. It is crazy how she can just chill with a small dog. two times little dogs have shot out from a person openeing up a door to ther house while i am walking her and my female just sat there. me heart was pounding though lol but she has been cool with tiny dogs.. weird shit... but is she sees a rabbit she goes after em... but lucky for the lady, that dog would have been a gone pecan

it is weird, my housedog tolerates the smaller ones (jack russel & another mutt thing) although she has gone bad on them before.

but for the most part she's ok with em, now rabbits on the other hand.....its over.

its weird how it works out.

my gramps old dogs never tripped off my uncles pomeranian, or my dads lab. they used to run around the yard while we were out there. goin up to theyre chain spots, fuck even exchangin licks lol.....but once another bully type strayed into our yard or one of em got off the chain, it was on like donkey kong!

The bad part is this is a positive story about pitbulls and you can bet this did not make the local news. They probably found a a mastif attack and aired it as a pitbull attack instead.

I hate politicians haha. But seriously, this story couldve easily gone the other way. It may have been a positive story this time but what about next time?

^^true^^ what if it wasnt a coyote with a already fucked up chi? what if it was a lady walkin her lab or boxer, this story would have become a dog attack, and the dogs would have been put down instead of reffered to as heroes.

yea its positive, which is cool, or whatever better than negative..sure

but id rather them not be in the news/media at all.

not as heroes, and definately not as villians

    outta sight, outta mind!

haha well you know that is not going to happen in this lifetime so why not just be happy for once that something POSITIVE is out there for the breed instead of the usual madness. Leave it at that.
