'Pit Bulls & Parolees' planned relocation sparks Facebook fight

The popular Animal Planet reality show "Pit Bulls & Parolees" doesn't have many fans in the Old West Ranch community these days. The show's star, Tia Torres, has been trying to move her operation to the remote mountain area outside Tehachapi.

The reality show features ex-convicts being trained to rehabilitate abused pit bull dogs. Torres has a major fan base that is evident by the popularity of her group's Facebook page, which has more than 50,000 fans. The show's Facebook page has more than 97,000 fans.

It's on the popular social networking site where tensions between Old West Ranch residents and the show's fans have recently reached a boiling point.

The property at which Torres plans to house 100 pit bulls is located deep inside the rural community. Recently, the property owner’s association president sent a letter to Old West Ranch residents asking them to oppose Torres' request for a conditional use permit from the Kern County Planning Commission.

"The properties are set up for an individual families but they are not set up for a commercial operation," association vice president Buz Grantham said.

Grantham said the letter was meant for the residents, but it was leaked to Torres, who posted it on her Facebook page. Eyewitness News checked Torres' Villalobos Dog Rescue Facebook page and found that Torres did in fact post the POA letter. The letter to Old West Ranch residents includes the president's name and phone number. Grantham said that action caused the 71-year-old association president to start receiving threats from fans.

According to Grantham there were "threats to her life, she had threats from people calling and saying that you could die."

The posting also included Torres' response, defending herself and her rescue. In it, Torres claims she will help the community by paying for road improvements. Eyewitness News has tried to reach Torres for comment, but by Tuesday evening our calls were not returned. We also tried to find Torres at the Old West Ranch property where she filmed one of her latest reality show episodes. She wasn't there either.

Residents say their reasons for rejecting Torres and Villalobos are purely environmental. However, they say the recent Facebook posting has them personally concerned.

The issue goes before the planning commission March 10, where it will decide to approve or deny her conditional use permit for the 100 dogs.

I wish they'd relocate it to the trash can.

Help the dogs, whatever that's fine. Cashing in on tv shows is bullshit. It quit being about the dogs a looooooooooooong time ago!

Funny she always claims to be broke, but now all of a sudden she can afford to pay for road improvements??????

rescue nut jobs are worse than fur mommies. i'd sign whatever i had to to keep a bunch of parolees and second hand dogs away from me and my family. it might sound insensitive, but most of those dogs are probably better of being pts. last thing an average person needs (or the breed for that matter) is a "rehabilitated dog" that's liable to pop off with its mouth without warning, especially if they were "rescued" from a fighting operation, whatever that is. if the dogs aren't exploited then they'll end up on the news for something negative. it's all about the money for this woman, as it is for most groups like that (best friends, etc.). and you can bet the network the show is on is about one thing only, and it's undeniable - $ money $.

I've watched the show and it's a bunch of mixed up mutts taken care of by people, who for the most part, don't know jack about these dogs. Try watching the episode where she goes to help the lady with the man biter.

  9. Re: 'Pit Bulls & Parolees' planned relocation sparks Facebook fight

you all are so freaking judgmental this show is to show that pit bulls and parolees are so misunderstood, parolees are people too, they have just made some bad mistakes in there life and just trying to start over, and pit bulls are not a bad or vicious breed, it all depends on how they are raised, I have owned 11 pits in my life and they were all great dogs, you all are so naive if you really think these people and these dogs are bad, and if you really think the show is just about making money.

There is nothing wrong with promoting the breed in a positive way.I thought thats why they have the dog shows.Just my opinion, the show is about ratings and money. She has some dogs on there that should never be adopted out.The average person watches a show like this, and gets a dog and gives it attention, and love. Then they read a book on obedience or take the dog to a training class maybe. Then they go to a dog park and bam the dog tears up another dog or kills it.Then they are on TV saying I don't know how this happen the dog is so lovable around people.

What I want to know is what the hell breed is she promoting? Mutts? AmBullies? It sure as sh*t ain't Pit Bulls!

I'm with you that the show in general is bad and some kid or woman who used to own some cuddly Golden is gonna go run out and get a "pittie" and bite off more than they can chew.

I don't believe she is promoting the breed as much as she is promoting herself and daughters. I stated that I thought Dog shows was suppose to do that. Thats how I met a few dogmen and in return they introduced me to other dogmen.I learned about about how to keep the dogs, nutrition, bloodlines, and many other things. The more I learned the more I realize there was a lot more to learn.I don't see her teaching about the breed.

  15. Re: 'Pit Bulls & Parolees' planned relocation sparks Facebook fight

I agree, I have two pits and I would never own any other breed ever again my dogs are wonderful and calm, I do also agree with you about the pits they act just the way they are raised if they are raised to fight they will be vicious and if they are raised to be calm they will be calm.

Bullshit and if you think these dogs are raised to fight you are a clueless moron who knows jack shit about this breed.

  17. Re: 'Pit Bulls & Parolees' planned relocation sparks Facebook fight

I agree with that.. I love her show I think she is doing a really good job with the parolees cause no one else will hire them no matter what they have done and the pits she is doing really well with them so they can find good homes.

  18. Re: 'Pit Bulls & Parolees' planned relocation sparks Facebook fight

I do know about this breed, and im not a moron Im just saying people put a bad name to this breed and it sucks only because they are considered vicious they are not, only if they get a bad owner and want a mean dog then thats what they will get no matter if its a pit or not it can be any breed JACKASS.

They kicked her out of Cali and she is on her way to New Orleans.
The show is lame, I can't stand anything on Animal Planet, its funded by HSUS. IF you watch AP's Fear tactics on pythons in FL. they clam that these snakes are going to become super snakes and travel across the country killing women and children. Propaganda to ban you from owning snakes. HSUS has been trying to ban reptile ownership for some time now and they are doing a great job at it since they have there own network.
They did get the Burmese python banned in the US and they now want all big snakes put on the lacey Act.
Before you know it, you will loose all of your rights in owning any type of animal. Don't support Animal Planet, it all HSUS propaganda.
