In a video that has gone viral in Peru two street dogs were caught on camera engaged in a brutal fight, forcing passer bys to throw water at them before beating and kicking at them in an attempt to separate them.

According to local reports the light brown stray pit bull attacked the other dog and bystanders were forced try to break the dog fight up.

The incident took place in the city of Chimbote, located on the north coast of Lima.

The footage shows a man in a hi-vis jacket beating the dogs with what appears to be a rubber pipe while another person grabs one of the brown dog's back legs as he tries to separate the two.

The brown pit bull appears to have clamped its jaws down upon the other's paw and was refusing to let go.

Onloookers can be heard screaming and shouting as the drama unfolded and some kick at the lighter coloured dog as it refuses to let go of the other. Others pour water over them.

At one point a police officer also attempts to intervene and grabs the pit bull's back legs but it still refuses to let go - and drags the other dog along the floor with it.

Eventually a woman starts hitting at the dogs with her handbag and the brown dog lets go briefly - allowing the crowd to seperate the two dogs with a parked car.

The black dog, apparently unharmed, scampers off while the brown one sniffs around for a few seconds before pottering off in the other direction.

After the fight the pit bull mix left the area and is still 'at large'.

On social media one user said: 'This is pretty heart warming actually. Tragic to see an animal hurt but wonderful to see so many people jump in to save the animal! So many people wouldn't do the same for people.'

Street dog fights happen all the time. It's only on the news now because it's a "pit bull"

The brown dog might not be a pitbull. 1) he hit the right spot.2) with all the shit the people was doing to him he stayed in hole.3) showed that he was enjoying what he was doing. So bring your Heeler cross are waiting LOL

Lol there are a lot of dogs who do this ( including mine) but they aren't game. They'll stay in a fight with a random dog but if they find themselves against a bulldog they'll most likely turn tail. But then, good dogs are were you find them.

True. Both dogs were street mutts. And the dog that was attacked ran off fine. My old mutt a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross of just shy of 50lbs and 19.5" tall hated every dog he laid eyes on, never made a sound then would grab a hold like he did on my friends American Bulldog. Doesn't mean he was game, just dog aggressive like any breed of dog can be.

The same can be said for a good percentage of bulldogs. Plenty dogs have won multiple matches but later quit when facing a dog that is better. It's not the fact they are facing a bulldog that makes any other breed of dog turn tail.... It's just the fact the other dog is better. Takes a special kind of dog to keep walking into an ass whooping, that's why my favorite phrase is "he/she ain't quit yet". Because until the dogs is laying there cold and not breathing it's hard to speculate on how much one will take before hanging it up. We all know of dogs that have quit and later went on to win and dogs that won and later went on to quit.
