Persian canary dog, a.k.a. Presa Canario.

Are you looking for a dog that will stay on your property and guard? Or are you looking for a dog that you will train in protection work?

    edit:

    Why not a gun?

Are you talking about the Presa canario , from Spain, they are good doogs with high defense drive wich is good if you plan to use him to just guard your home. A lot of people think just because the dog is known to be "aggressive" it will bite an intruder, i think its more than %80 of those dogs that are known for being aggressive will tuck their tails under their legs when they see a real bad guy trying to intrude into their property, most dogs yes, even pitbull could be trained for protection work(not suggested though), they key word here is "trained"

i am very happy with my 2 rotties.but they are protection trained.never just buy a dog and put it out in your yard and expect it to do any serious portection work.case in point before i got my rotties i had 2 great pyrinese dogs they were massive flock guardian dogs i was happy with them because they would run towards my front gate and bark bark bark and growl if anyone drove up or walked up and i didn't see them.then they would come back when i called them and were fine around that person after that.well someone climbed my wall and they barked and growled but never did anything they didn't bite or corner the person or do anything.so after that i gave them to a friend of mine who is using them for the intedned purpose to guard his sheep and they are doing great at that because thats what they were bred to do.now my 2 rotties are great.just yesterday i was out changing the oil in my truck and my 2 dogs were loose,my wife let someone in the gate with out telling me all i see was my dogs passing by as i was under my truck and i heard a lot of barking and screaming.so i scurried out from under my truck and my dogs were holding this man at bay and my female had her muzzle right in his vital region as i call it wich is the front of his pants so that if he moved or threatned me he could sing high soprano from now on.so i didn't know this man from atom and he didn't come up in a car so i gave them the watch him command and how they are trained is they sit down and if the person moves they attack.so i called the house and asked my wife and she verified his story and he was a sales man going house to house selling kitchen gadgets.so i told the dogs it was ok and they got all friendly with him and he was petting them and they was licking his hands and face.so thats the diffrence between a properly bred and trained guard dog and just getting a big dog with guarding instincts and just putting it out in your yard more often than not they will just bite someone passing by if they are not socialized right or if they ever do get out they will do the same,or they just will not do what you think they will do and you will be dissapointed.guard dogs are not for the novice they are large powerfull animals with a short temper.you have to get a well trained one,a well bred one,you have to work with them on the training every day to keep them fresh, you have to contain the properly, you have to be able to handle them 100% in every situation.it is just a lot of work that most can not handle.i would look into a security device like adt,or brinks home security unless you have the experince with dogs.a stun gun or a taser might also be good for you and maybe some pepper spray.but a dog requires a lot of work on their own never mind a guard dog and most folks don't know how to handle it right.

If you are really interesed on a Presa Canario only advice i can give you is to make sure to get a dog off proven working lines.

Just like every breed there are good and bad breeders and dogs for many purposes.

    Good luck!

The Persian Canary Dog you speak of I believe, like others have said, is the Perro de Presa Canrio. It's new name is the Dogo Canario. They are fine guards and do well with training. You will definitely want some training on that dog. At the very least obedience. Also make sure you get a good breeder. One that breeds for any one trait is not good. One that breeds for looks alone whether it be to the standard or bigger, badder, is better type, is not good. Look for working dogs but you'll have to be prepared to handle, exercise, and train those dogs. ALWAYS socialize your dog. Not getting him used to people will make him unstable and often fearful. Never just throw the dog out in the yard to guard something. Another breed that would work pretty well is the Cane Corso. I have yet to see a true, well bred one in the states though.

A Dogo Argentino is a hunting dog. I wouldn't try and make it a guard dog. That is not a good idea at all. If you want a guard dog, buy a guard dog. If you want a big game hunter, buy a big game hunter but don't try and make one into the other. That is unfair to you and the dog.

The loud, seemingly impressive, snarling dogs tend to be some of the worst guards. Like a bulldog shouldn't growl at a dog nether should a good guard growl at a human. Growling, showing teeth, raising hair, ect are all meant to avoid a fight. It shows a lack of confidence. If the dog is confident he can protect your property he doesn't need to do all that. He will be silent and attack when necessary. No warnings, no second chances. Many dogs will do nothing but bark at an intruder and not socializing the dog will greatly add to the insecurity and lack of confidence required. Now barking isn't bad or doesn't make a bad guard at all. Threat display (growling, raising hair, showing teeth, standing square with his tail up) is the bad part. Barking is to alert. That does not show a lack of confidence. Depending on how you want your dog to handle the situation you may want to train him not to bark. Definitely find a professional trainer to help you with this. All of this. You should be able to call your dog off a sleeve with a simple "out". No shouting and none of that having to pull the dog off. If the trainers dogs are like that he/she does not have enough control over their dogs. I would also avoid most people who train police dogs. They tend to not know shit. Wearing leather gloves so that the dogs don't hurt the handlers. The HANDLERS? WTF? Or hanging a dog from a tree till it passes out as the only way you can get it to stop attacking people? That is considered normal to a lot of trainers now. That is nuts. A dog that is trying to kill anything within reach needs to be PTS not used as a guard or police dog. That dog is a liability. Just make sure you pick your trainer and breeder very well. Also, it is better to find a trainer that has experience with that breed. Good luck with your search. :D

No offense, but by the sound of your post, you don't need any sort of "badass" guardian dog or protection dog. They aren't status symbols.

So I apologize, but I cannot in good conscience suggest you get a breed of this nature.

And for the record, if you were truly serious, you would find reputable owners of these dogs through Schutzhund clubs, Ringsport clubs, & anything else of this nature & not be asking around on internet forums.

I suggest taking some self defence classes, learn to fire a shot gun. Never put the responsibility of your safty upon an animal. Be a human and become the top of the food chain.

I have been around both the breeds you spoke of. I think there are better dogs for that job. But then again dogs don't scare me. a shot gun does if it is pointed at me.

All the Dobies and GSDs I owned did everything you say a good guard dog shouldn't do. The same for my daughter's Rottie.
When my dogs would throw themselves against the window almost breaking the glass to get at someone I really don't think they were lacking confidence. When I came home and found an intruder pinned up against my wall with a dog showing every tooth if the guy even breathed to hard I don't think my dog was lacking confidence. (Some Dobie will let people in your home but will not let them out, I owned one like that in the 70s) When they ripped the seat out of intruder pants as they ran for their lifes jumping back over the fence I don't think my dogs were lacking confidence. When I woke up one night with a female Dobie standing over me snarling. Scared me half to death I thought OMG they were right Dobies do turn on their owners, she is going to kill me. She had staddled my body had her face looking into my face and every tooth was showing. She was 93 lbs of very mad dog. Then she licked my face and went back to looking at the window while guarding me. She was one of the first I owned and I learned though the years that many Dobies will stand over you when you are a sleep if they think there is a threat to you.
I have many tales of dogs in my 62 years defending me. They all growled, showed teeth and raised the hair on their back They also bit trespassers, treed trespassers and in general kept me, my home and property safe. A dog who attacks without warning is a danger to his owners welfare. If the dog doesn't let the owner know there is a threat and just attacks he could harm an innocent person. If the dog barks the owner then has the option of calling the dogs off. I am the one who decides not the dog if I am home. If I am not home then the dog can have at it.
Some people cut the vocal cords on Dobermans so they can't bark and growl because Dobies are as bad as Chihuahua when it comes to barking. Dobermans are excellant guard dogs, they know what they are suppose to do and they do it well even with all the barking, growling and hair raising.
