  4. Sure. But then what does "OTC" and "match" measure? These are "Game" dogs, not "ability to win" dogs. When a gentlemen takes an unconditioned dog of the chain and pushes twenty plus pounds, he is measuring gameness (along with his own stupidity). "Wins" and "Losses" can be weakly correlated with gameness. Gameness is strongly correlated with Gameness.

You see gameness where and when you happen to see it. It COULD be in some OTC BS, in legit competition, or as you set a stage to see if it's there or not (game test). You don't set out to see it specifically in competition. You set out to win. But if you see it there, then that's where you saw it. You want it to be there as you test a dog for it, more than in any other setting. But it happens when it happens.

  6. Why is "OTC BS" and "competition" "Legit"? Can "OTC" be "Legit" and "competition" "BS"? The rest of your post seems logical.

That wasn't the crux of the subject. Sure, OTC can be serious or a matter of one dog being a replacement dog, or a matter of a dog that would not work or work at all properly. And I've seen a lot of competition which was not top notch. This is the way of competition. ALL competition. However, I refer to the type OTC's which ARE impromptu BS.
Gameness is something you want to see when it is necessary for you to see it, or if you are specifically testing for it.

  8. Why is "impromptu" an issue? Isn't that implicit in an "OTC"? More specifically, how does the time component (impromptu) affect the thing (system)? A dog really doesn't know much whether it has been a femtosecond or a timeless interval or whether the events preceding the hunt were cordial or combative.

My post was in reply to where one might witness gameness. You're reading off track scenarios into it. OTC has been discussed rather dry. I responded to where one looks for or may see gameness. OTC has nothing to do with what I said but for the fact it is one venue where one might see gameness. There are near endless scenarios which one might see as OTC, legit, not legit, or whatever in between. I've already posted my piece on the wide possibilities and situations one might or might not call OTC. Read my post(s) on OTC before you jump to conclusions, split hairs, or read non applicable scenarios into my latest comment and reply as to where one might see gameness.

  11. I did read your post. Which is why I responded to it with your words. Did you not say "I refer to the types of OTC which are impromptu BS."? Post #67. Apart from that, you did not answer the questions from post #68. I asked questions to better understand what you said. I am not very bright.

Well, I'm afraid your lack of lucidity is not mine to tutor. I learned long ago not to dicker with the cheap seat hecklers. Perhaps you can now direct your trolling and meaningless agitation ploys somewhere else.
    Thank you.

  13. If you "learned long ago" then why were you speaking to me? "Meaningless agitation ploys" must mean "questions about exactly what I said". I suggest reading "Evolution in four dimensions" by E. Jablonka and M.J. Lamb. You'll find a character named Ifcha Mistabra who asks questions to the authors about what was said in the chapter. It really illustrates the give and take of a mature, intellectual and robust conversation.

Michael Ansara passed away recently. Don't know much about him other than the fact that he made an appearance in The Rifleman which is my favorite show. I remember the episode well. Ansara plays U.S Deputy Marshall Sam Buckhart. Mutual respect was apparent and demonstrated between Sam and Lucas boy; even in the mist of high tensions which prompted a rare insult (racial slur) by McCain. Both Sam and lucas boy showed class and maturity rarely seen these days. R.I.P Mr Ansara.

  14. Gameness is a continuum. If we can say that on one end of the continuum is represented or occupied by a dog that has never been looked at and that the other end of the continuum is represented by a dog who maybe went into a Spinosaurus driving a 797. Where is "OTC" and "match" represented along this axis. In other words, which is consistently and logically better at predicting degree of gameness?

Michael Ansara. If I remember correctly, played Cochise in what I believe was a spin off show titled 'Broken Arrow' Played many character rolls, oft seen as an American Indian, yet I believe he was born in Syria. He was obviously in his nineties at the time of his passing. I remember watching him on t.v. as a child. I also remember watching Chuck Connors play minor league ball for the L.A. Angels of the old Pacific Coast League. I met him once. Not bad memories at all. Getting a little older makes one realize that some memories were privileges that many will never encounter.

In my opinion an otc could be a cheap check a win is a win to some people! A cheap check is what I would call an otc! Jmo

  17. Did not know that. The episode I am referring to is called "The Indian" I think. He plays a Marshall transporting an Indian. Probably the only gentlemen I have seen on The Rifleman, and I have seen every episode multiple times, who seemed to be wiser and more confident then McCain. Good stuff TDK.

If you are looking for gameness and I think gameness is inherited and can't be placed in a dog, the OTC is by far the better check.

Most will agree fatigue and frustration are the leading factors in a dog hanging it up.

Working a dog and bringing him to great physical condition can off set that fatigue and frustration to where his conditioning can hide the cur in him. It may also allow him to go longer than the other and the other dog curs or gets stopped before his cur comes to the top.

Lots of angles on the OTC. Personally I don't use them but I use the OTC's kissing cousin. I work the dog for his first and put him out there but I do not do an all out game check. That part of the game I am betting on me, what I have seen and what I think the dog will be/will do.

Not that it matters all that much for this discussion but at least the first one will "count".

Most do not count OTC's but they can serve a purpose. I know guys who bet on game checks which are pretty much OTC's and some count them and some do not.

Then (and mostly I do not) trusting the next guy to have an OTC dog.

We had CH Charlie. If I st on a bucket and rubbed the dog beside him he would turn his 12 foot chain into a flying jenny. A large chunk of the chain off the ground and he would sprint a circle for as long as you would pet the other dog. The funniest part was that every six or eight laps he would stop, bark once or twice and then go in the opposite direction.

Off the chain Charlie would be in better condition that 95% of the dogs who have been worked by people who really know what they are doing yet we could have honestly said, "He is right off the chain".
