I want to get my dog in better shape we walk and play with the flirt pole but i was wondering how people feel about weighted collars like the one from stillwater kennel supply. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

i personally wont use em. i know some do, and claim theyre safe, but ive never liked the idea of putting weight on a dogs neck while im trying to work it.

stick to walking, the flirt, and maybe get a springpole set up.
my preference is swimming, but not everybody has land in the county or a swimtank

Ok That makes sense i have also seen harness seem like the weight would be more evenly displaced. I had built a spring pole but dog didnt like it. Thinking about a carpet mill. Thanks for the opinions on this dont want to hurt my dog.

a weighted collar wont hurt your dog if your using the right weight, plus a weighted collar weights less than most peoples chain spots

  7. Yeah I believe that a total chain spot is probably around 18pounds give our take. its all about what you really want. in the past I made a mistake by having a really heavy link chain I got from a broken rigging chain covered it with fire hose so my girls coat wouldn't get jacked up you know from the metal tarnish. well any ways I feed her then went out in the bay playing fetch with a Frisbee. to my surprise the damn Frisbee stopped floating after a couple of tosses and my girl was out there swimming what seemed like for ever with this chain around her neck . she took in some salt water and i started after her cause she would come back with out the damn Frisbee. A Pity for ya, I felt horrible wading though the mud trying to get her to give up. Mistake by an owner trying to get results. what kinda results the "inevitable" naturalistic Muscle gain and tone this guy is now 8 months and has not gotten turned on by water yet and no weighted Collar.

I was always taught that a weight collar is fine as long as its only 10 percent of the body weight.

jr you're story is more about owner stupidity than using weights on a dog.

I've used weighted collars fine. Just don't go too heavy, too fast.

Because people do choose beauty rather than to have a light, good collar. And they do not know that it some times also create behavior problem in dogs.

Not sure if this was the right thing to do or not. But I made a weighted collar out of a chain and 3oz fishing weights. I only let my dog wear it when walking our 2 mile morning and evening strolls. His overall conditioning and wind have increased significintly. The total weight of the collar is 12oz. I also use MSM to make sure that his joints are nice and strong. Is this ok?

the chain thing is a good idea, but very typical apearance for a so-called "dog fighter". its what the media has led people to believe, i personally would not walk my dog arround with a heavy chain collar arround its neck and let people look at me with that on my dog. appearance wise i would get the nice sand weights or steel weights inside the collar that they make at obriens or stillwater. its just not a pretty image for your neigbors. one you already have a APBT and then you walk your dog with a chain collar just not a good image i want to protray were i live with my dogs.. And im saying i dont even use a weighted collar, but if i did i wouldnt do it the way your doing it. FISH OILS also help with the joints and skin ive never used MSM if you reaserched it use it just know the doseage. i dont do too many extra supplements besides and human vitimins that i cut in 1/2 and feed 2-3 times a week and fish oil........ food for thought on the chain collar you made though, but do what you want its your dog and your image..

Weighted collar and harness must be used for swiming, it'll give the right resistence w/o the stress in joints. It works great since swiming is a low-risk workout.

been using weighted collars for over twenty years...nothing wrong with them...especially on those long, hard pulling walks....it is a physical conditioning tool as well as a way to get the dog use to carrying his weight plus some....never had an injury or bad experience with the collar....know some people who put them on and let them carry them throughout the day while on the chain....with no issues....i also drag chains, usually about 15%-20% of the dog's weight....sometimes from a light pulling harness and other times from the collar ring....i use the weighted collar when pulling the chains from the light harness....US1

I don't think its a good idea to feed a dog then work em..... think about how you would feel running around with a stomach full of food??
Also this type of work is very bad for your dogs kindneys, if thats how you condition your dogs more power to you.. but you will have a better dog once he's empty.
I feed 30-45 mins after workout once the heart rate is back to or close to normal that way the body still has a chance to burn off access calories.

I prefer dragging chains rather then weighted collars.. but thats just me and everyone has their own methods and conditioning techniques.
