On dogs, cows and cabbages

Just finish reading R.Dawkins new one-- The greatest show on earth. Anyone else? Do yourself and your dog a favor by picking it up. Talks extensively about breeding (fauna and flora) along with overviews of some brilliant experiments illustrating the power of artificial selection.

 

lol i'm currently reading it. hands down one of the best books i've read. i recommend it to anybody even mildly interested in genetics

 

Dawkins isn't in a position (not his discipline) to write a definitive book on the subject--genetics; i think Gould would agree with me on this one. This book, like most of his books, is written for the lay professional interested in evolutionary biology. A light read indeed. Very disappointed not to see more people on this board into staying abreast with the latest ideas in science. Is it a reflection of the people who frequent this board or the bulldog community in general? Evo-devo, quantum mechanics, Poincares conjecture, chronolgy protection conjecture, loop quantum gravity--- all of these ways of thinking can help you be a better dogman, father and person.......

quantum mechanics- Feynman, Murray Gelman, Kaku (Kaku being the most accessible esp. "Hyperspace")

Poincares Conjecture- nice little book on the market by the same name, i forget the author. Or you can read Grisha's (ACE BULLDOG) original papers online.

CPC- any Hawking book esp. "The future of theoretical physics and cosmology". Collectors item- symposium held for Hawkings 60th b-day!

LQG- Smolin. Solid book. Also check out Brockmans books for essays by Smolin.

Anything Gould. Prolific writer and polymath that came up with Punctuated equilibrium theory along with Niles Eldrige (nice overview in Ontogeny and Phylogeny). Or check out his famous essay on the decline of .400 hitting. Classic

 

Hmmmm, this is a tough one. How do I answer the question/sweeping generalization above without sounding like a boring snob or outing you as a pretentious quasi-intellectual? You're obviously smarter than I, so perhaps you could suggest a solution. In the mean time, I'm going to pop in to physics chat and suggest that I'm more evolved, more informed and a better person than anyone there who hasn't studied "square" dynamics and "box" theory.

By the way, Dawkins is a favorite of mine. After all, there aren't that many authors out there that a good evolution defending atheist, like me, can recommend. Even through the smarmy insensitivity, he's a pretty good read.
As for this particular book, I haven't looked in it. It's deep winter here, so I've been too busy raising my children, caring for my dogs, correcting papers, shoveling snow and answering the assumptions of smarter-than-thous on the internet to read it. Rest assured, that as soon as the temperature increases and the paperwork decreases I'll take it out of the box, read it, and get back to you.

That statement (among others)suggest that you dont have even a cursory knowledge of Biology and more specifically the Intelligent Design movement: But not to worry, i'll help you out by rec. a couple of good reads- Tower of Babel and Mere Creation (Biola univ. symposium). Dawkins is no where near evolutions bulldog like Huxley.......

I'm more than interested in physics, biology and genetics in general [though I absolutely LOVE learning about space mechanics and the universe]; however, seeing as how I'm still in highschool I won't pretend to know more than I do... But I'll definitely check out this book.

Crushbones, did you say that the oldtimers arent interested in science? Did you forget that the oldtimers that you people read about are from the generation that lived through Einstien's fame, watched Dirac and Bohr formulate quantum mechanics, the nascent space program and Oppenheimer smashing particles?

Floyd's statement represents pure logic which transcends all disciplines. Whether your studying Merde (Corpology), Holographic principle or dogs- its all the same.

I wonder how the intelligence exhibited in Floyd's statement is reflected in his breeding program? Is he a successful breeder/dogman?

 

In all the years, i have never purchased a dog or even taken a dog from someone for two reasons:

I can bred my own dogs.

Everyone that i have met, in person or on the internet, has shown little to no smarts. Similar to what you see on here...... But i would love to get a dog from this dogman (Floyd B.).

My parents taught me that "when you are weak it permeates into everything you do" If you are weak in one area of your life than you are weak in all areas.....

Your parents may have a point. Your weakness in the "class" and "common" sense areas of your life defintely show through in your almost psychotic need to call people stupid and drop every name from your "Big Little Handbook of Famous Scientists." If you were half as bright as you think you are, you would take your "smarts" to a physics forum instead of shitting and splashing around here, like some deranged goldfish in a pirahna pool. You're way out of your depth here, and just don't have enough "smarts" to know it. And as Crushbones recommends, go and try to get laid, it would certainly help that all-over-asshole attitude of yours.....or, is that another weakness in your life?

I would also like to suggest, Kamasutra, and tantra very intersting books dont know who the authors of these books are but I found them very imformative. Lab work is Phenomenal!!!!!

 

junebug im not trying to be an ass in any way shape or form this time, but i dont see you travelling the universe with your "smarts" so does that speak anything about you? no it doesnt so please dont belittle others who dont publish their knowledge on forums.

thats like me saying how many of you guys have good wilderness skills? or how many of you could last more than 3 days in the tundra? im sure the replies would be small to non existant, you can read about things all you want an understand it but its a different ball game to actually get out an do it.
