here is a reply already, from a member on the board, to a fellow owner...

Thanks for the email. I agree with your assessment of this proposal. I don't believe there is anything genetically determined about this breed of dog that makes it a violent animal, and therefore subject to banning as a public safety menace. The key is the training provided by the owner, and as you indicate, bad training of any kind of dog can make that dog a public safety problem. I've gotten a bunch of emails and a few calls, so I can tell that it's kicked up a little dust with people.

Councillor Furey's motion, while well-intended, is misguided. My sense if that what may come out of this is not a ban on pit bulls, but a reasonable review of the city's ordinance relative to dogs....all dogs. I will oppose any sort of ban or restriction on any particular breed of dog.

    Thanks for the feedback!

    Best,
    Matt

    there is hope.....

I'm writing letters as we speak. I also live near Salem and used to walk downtown once a week with my dog, a Greyhound, and my friend's APBT.

We were walking one day and this group of drunken rednecks stopped us (yeah, it was 10am, classy). The guys were talking to my friend about her pit. The woman was afraid of her and my friend informed her that she was more likely to bite than her dog was (which is true, I've seen her do it before). The woman looked at me and said "Well either way I'll just pat this nice Dalmation over here" and started patting Wally, who is not only not a Dalmation, but isn't even spotted! He's brindle for crap's sake!!!!!!!!!!

So yeah, that was my Salem story. But other than that I love walking there. The only dangerous dogs I've met on the streets there would be two Italian Greyhounds that wanted everyone, and everything dead.

Subject: Mtg UPDATE Salem, MA BSL

There is no date for Councilor Furey's proposal for BSL meeting as of yet. I will have a time and date TOMORROW a.m. I wanted to get this out in advance so that people do not show up at the regular council meeting Thursday evening as this topic will not be discussed.

If you haven't sent a letter, do so now!

    Thanks!
