I have a 2 year old male dog who has been the only dog for a while. I recently purchased a female a little over a year. They got into it while she was eating. I chained him up an they have seemed to be getting along a little better. i stand out side with them while they are eating and take it up when they are done, how long should i keep my male dog on a chain?

What kind of dogs do you have?

If they are related to pit bulls in any way, why were/are unrestrained dogs eating anywhere near each other?

They might have gotten into it sooner or later, however, your actions have pretty much guaranteed that they can never be trusted together again.

If separating dogs is not your thing, may I suggest you pick the one you like the best and shoot the other one. Or, you can continue as you are doing and just make sure you get the last dog standing to the vet in time.

Both approaches will solve your underlying problem; its just that although option A will cost you a bullet now, in the long run it will save you time, vet bills, aggravation and having to write more posts that just makes folks want to shake their heads in disbelief.

Do your dog live on the chain or he only go out on it when it's feeding time? I'm not getting that part at all and at the end of the day it's never safe to feed dogs when there all beside each other because somebody might walk towards the wrong food pan and get there ass kicked. It seems you don't don't want the dog on the chain so i would listen to High coast hiker's option A :D

highcoasthiker.. they are pits and im pretty sure your experienced when dealing with pits, im new to this i been around them all my life but this is my first time actually owning my own dogs. yea i can say im a little inexperienced but thats why i posted this to get help and gain more knowledge. And they were not eating unrestrained,,i feed both of them late at night,,early the next morning they were both lose before i went to class, and she was eating some crumbs and he came and hit her. so it wasnt just feeding them unsupervised.

I hear ya man, I hear ya.
Feed separately. Keep toys or anything they can fight over out of the way.
Don't expect them to get along. Like I said, it might have happened anyway, however, I find that once there's been bad blood between dogs, they'll always find a chance to fight again. If you were hoping to have dogs that could peacefully coexist, I believe you're out of luck. You might be able to have dogs that can respectfully coexist, but even that I wouldn't bet on. Keep an eye on things, keep them securely separated when you aren't able to break up a fight, invest in some breaking sticks, and good luck.
