O.Stevens

Ozzie had many ROM dogs, are there any dogs bred down from his Homer or Virgil dogs around and still effective in the game dog world?
If its too private I would understand if no info is forthcoming.

 

The blood is around.. Very few really have it heavy Virgil/homer.. It works best crossed and I think Ozzie himself realized that as of his last years he was outcrossing to redboy, Eli or boyles strains. There are a few good ones out there just gotta know where to look!

Had a dog with a little O.Stevens blood through an import named Teacher. Teacher was a very good back end dog. Winning two with that style. He was off Red Ape x O.Stevens' Laverne. the grandson I had very good ability.
Teacher was the only dog with any Homer/Virgil blood that was imported to this side of the world and was thus bred away from that blood. He was mostly bred to dogs carrying high percentages of Fontenot's Booger through the dogs imported from Morfin. There were some good ones from these crosses but the percentages were low.

 

I crossed mine with boyles/bolio and got pretty decent results. Back door seems to be a trait that gets passed on.

another that was sent our way with from O Steven's, his mother Pazi 1 of those Boyles crosses.. She was a pretty average dog with no crunch and heavy people mean. She produced Bobby who is a POR producer and his progeny are still kicking as well and good down here. His only got a little % of that blood but his style and that off of the dogs directly off him can be likened to that family. They however were pretty small dogs not going higher than 18 - 19kg which is around 39 to 41 pounds. Pretty common to find dogs down from this family to have pretty decent mouth.

 

The Teacher dog was very highly rated way back in the day, he won over 2 very good animals. What made it so good was that his owner and handler wasnt known to do well in terms of conditioning, he beat a well respected kennel with his style and bad keep for his 1st. His owner at the time had just lost in short with a son off of Tramp called Big John, if I remember I think it was over in under 25 due to bad keep and he lost with a son off of Wild Sides Rapid Roy in 13min and he quit. So Teach was rated the best out of the lot and was kept in house for the most part till the early 2000's when he was sent to the north and bred to the Booger and Swamper dogs. Most of these didnt work as Mashamplan says they were very low %. His best crosses came when bred to the offspring off of Big John and there are still loads of those crosses that have Boyles added to them via a son of Buster Brown down in Swaziland and those guys have been keeping and breeding that family for many years. Based on how Teach was bred its no wonder he produced better with dogs that had a high % of Redboy than the rest of the other stuff. Its shame his family is nearly all gone , many of his daughters have been bred to Frisco bred stock, they are also just Okay.

 

They are far from nearly all gone :-)

His owner was a damn poor conditioner. Teachervhad to overcome his poor condition as well as the opponent and accomplished it. Thing is his new owner took advice from someone who was averse to the redboy blood in the country and so he was mostly bred to those dogs carrying a high percentage of Morfins blood.

 

The thing that made Ozzie dogs great just as they made Bert dogs great was the fact that those men actually used, bred and raised their own stock.

And the post is about Ozzie's blood, not Ozzie. The mans character & morals have nothing to do with his dogs DNA & performance to hunt or produce. So what does my comments about the man have to do with the dogs I feed that I got from him. I mean you have dogs in your house that you bought from a convicted CHILD MOLESTER.
