Sadly, i don't think we have a range around here to try one out at. I carried a 9mm in the military & was terrible with it. The trigger pull was too hard so I was all over the place with it. Now give me a rifle & I can reach out & touch someone. :p

Anyhoo, I need something I can slip in my pocket while I walk my bulldogs in case some a-hole tries to jack my dog. Plus, the crime in my town is terrible.

Would a snub nosed gun decrease the accuracy of the weapon? I don't want someone to have to be right up on me for me to be able to hit them accurately. I don't want to miss so they run off & cause trouble for someone else & I don't want to wound them so they live & sue me. If I worse comes to worst & I have to draw down on someone, I want to give them a one way ticket to meet Jesus.

It would decrease accuracy but gunfights are usually up close. If you are looking into 9mm look at kahr, glock 26, s&w m&p compact. A good cheap 380 is the bersa. I have always liked them and most are very reliable. Also revolvers can be little harder to be accurate with becuse of the double action trigger. If the trigger pull was too much in a semi auto i would say a revolver would probably also be too much...

I am a small female. My son got me a Springfield XD40. I found it easy to load and fire. They come in a compact version also if you want to go even smaller. It was the first gun I've ever owned and worked well for me. Try one out at the range and see if it works for you.

The Bersa 380's are top of the line. Excellent triggers and reliable and even kinda cute to look at. Look into the Bersa. They are like a less expensive better designed Walther PPK.

Bersa even makes 9mm and 45acp which have gotten good reviews from the magazine writers also. They are more expensive than the 380acp and less compact though. For concealability, a good 380 is hard to beat.

    Good going on the stockpiles.

Now with the 45/70 while it is true you can not beat a good 30-06 and I do love my 30-06, The reason I like the 45/70 above all else is very simple. Not only can you use it on everything you would a 30-06, But you also have the big game stopper there as well.

How many dangerous game rounds can you take a deer with and not damage the meat? Not many, You have that big hard round that you can take all across the board and still manage to have good kill rate without much damage.

Just for jollies one time I took the 45/70 coyote hunting to see what would happen, Now this is not a coyote round by any means but I figured it would be a good test since I have taken many deer and like sized game with it and seen hardly any wasted meat from using the round. So the first day I didn't get anything, Second day there was a nice male but couldn't really get a shot where I thought I could have a good kill so I waited and then on the third day there was a nice male came within distance and I took the shot, Dropped it like a sack of taters and when I went over to get him I was expecting a good amount of pelt damage and for it to big mess....To my surprise it wasn't bad at all.

I then decided well I want to take it and see what would happen with coons and smaller game, That didn't turn out well at all, lol. I took the shot with a gopher and there wasn't anything left of it. Coon it took well but took the entire side out of it almost, But on Coyote sized game and above it is about as close as a do it all rifle that I have found with hands on experience. And in a situation where you need to survive and do it well your not going to be able to take along 7 or 8 rifles, And x amount of pistols and your 3 favorite shotguns. This is the reason why I like the 45/70 I can have a rifle that can not only do what the 30-06 does, But if I take off someplace where I will run into elk or bison I know I can take it and have meat for a good long while. Also should I run into bear or mountain lion I can rest assured I can take it, Now I know there have been bear taken with 30-06 and bison as well as other large game....But you are dealing with a much smaller round and there is that higher risk of pissing the thing off.

With that said though, If I could only have one single gun and I didn't have the ammo or a 45/70 rifle my choice would be a shotgun. You can take anything in North America with that and all you have to do is adjust your round. Shot for rabbits and bird, Slugs for big game, Buckshot for defense against both two legged threats as well as your bears and things of that nature. Your back to one gun many uses and that is what I personally look for in a survival gun.

Also making your own shot and slugs are very easy and inexpensive, As far as action I would choose a good solid built single shot. Those things are built about as solid as you can build a firearm and if anything is going to fail it will be your firing pin and your fix there is a penny nail and about 30-45 minutes of your time.

I'm not sure what calibers you're comfortable with, but I'd recommend either a Sig P232 if you want a smaller gun,or a Glock 26 or 27 if you'd like a bigger caliber. If you're wanting to just slip it in your pocket and not use a holster then I'd avoid the Glocks in that case and get a Good Sig in .380,9mm,,357 Sig,.40 or .45 ACP,whichever caliber you like.

There's nothing inherently unreliable about the cartridge design,.380s in good guns run fine,.380s in junk don't.But that's the same with any cartridge.Another gun I'd like to get is another .44 magnum carbine,I sold my last one and still regret it.

I enjoy my XD's. I love the glock but preffer the fit of the XD in my hand. Other than that I find they are on the same playing field. Thats my personal opinion.

and i will argue with you on that one. ill be nice LOL....XDs havent been adopted by any major law enforcement agency honestly because the have been proven to be more delicate time and time again. you gotta realize tho, that these guys PUNISH THE HELL OUTTA A POTENTIAL ISSUE SIDEARM. that and the fact that Springfields customer service is sh*t. i know Springfield dealers who cant get parts for the guns theyve sold and customers brought back. you do realize the XD was marketed many years ago as the HS 2000 for around 300, but SA bought the rights to them, jacked the price thru the roof, and basically youre paying 300 for the gun and 200 to cover the marketing scheme. im bein brutally honest bud, and i wish you luck, but id sell it and get an M&P or a Glock. i want my guns to be able to withstand punishment and neglect that would turn other pistols into paperweights.;)

Just giving a different point of view. To each his own, like I said I was going to purchase a Glock because I, at the time had shot plenty, liked them, however I prefer the fit of the XD to my hand.

I will agree that they have a poor service. They were asking the LE to send the guns back to them for any modifications they wanted done. However they are writing a new policy.

join this forum. its made up of law enforcement, military(upper-end fellas i might add), executive bodyguards(including ex secret service) and industry professionals. ask about the XD, but get ready for the shitstorm. these guys are the real deal. they expect pistols to withstand 125 thousand rounds with no issues. only the strong survive http://www.m4carbine.net/index.php
