One dog was taken to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter and a second will be buried after they were found in a Battle Creek garage on Wednesday.

Battle Creek Animal Control Officers and police officers said Thursday one emaciated pit bull terrier and one dead pit bull were found after officers were called to the first block of North McKinley Street at 4:03 p.m.

Officers said they found a dead female dog in a recycling bin in the garage and a male dog malnourished but still alive.

Police are continuing their investigation but believe the dogs may have been left in the garage for as long as six weeks.

The owner of the detached garage said a former neighbor who was being evicted asked to temporarily keep the dogs in the garage for a short time and that he would remove them shortly.

The property owner said he never used the garage and doesn't go into it and didn't know the dogs were still inside before they were found.

Officers are continuing their investigation and searching for the owner of the dogs.
