I've had dogs break a nail before and/or have seen dogs get their nails clipped too short (painful) but recently one of my dogs ripped 1/2 her nail off. I put her on a no activity schedule until it healed... well she got rough housing w/ another one of my dogs (thy're both pups and the dog I'm referring to is 10 months old) and the damn nail is now broke/sheared/ground down to nothing! I know she'll really be "on the shelf" now for a while but besides basic 1st aid, does anyone have any suggestions??? Thanks in advance.

Ouch!.. Sounds like something I'd take to a vet. But thats me.. I don't do the doggy first aid.

My Achilles, once had that thumb claw , broken, well the nail was still hanging, and the his flesh was showing, what I did was just disinfect twice a day or whenever needed with [font=arial,sans-serif][size=-1]hydrogen peroxide, and give him amoxciline 2 times per day, I did this for a week, and after that all was good. Good luck.

I'm close to going to the vet, but I feel (sort of) that she'll be fine. I have gave her cephlaxin (sp.?) and have been keeping it clean... if I got to make an appointment for a Saturday vet visit I need to do it soon, though he'll allow me to walk in, it'll have to be at least by tomorrow that I make the decision. Thanks for the advice.

I battled this for several months of the season this year. I went to the vet first too. He could'nt even walk on it. He's fine now. In the end the best thing is time. Keep it clean with regular cleansing and dissinfecting. Also if you would like to speed up the process, you could spinkle jello gelatin on top of the dog food daily, or give presciption prenatal vitamins. Hope this helps.

I started a thread not long ago about this because my brother's female ripped her quick out the bottom of her nail and the nail was hanging there. I was told to clip it off, but she chewed it off. Her quick is growing a new nail around it. She is fine now and it didnt slow her down any.

Is there a quick present or is it missing too?

The quick is gone too. I just got off the phone w/ the vet. He said as long as it doen't look infected and if I keep it clean etc.. that it should be OK. The first thing he asked was that if it was hanging (he said "if so, all I would do is to cut it off) Well, it's not hanging, it's just "not there" just a very small nub. I guess wonderful Mother nature will take care of things.

As for the jello??? I'm thinking that the gelatin is somehow what nails are made of????

Yea, I did a search on broken nails as well as looking in Merck... couldn't find anything online.
    THANKS FOLKS!!!!!!!
