  3. Do you guys think ground beef with 20%fat is sutible?(for keep)or do think the meat needs to be less fat or more fat?....

  4. Sorry what I should of said was.I want to use 20%fat ground beef as my protein source (keep)do you guys think that's fine?or it should be leaner or fatter?.........

I would go with 70/30 meat/fat ratio and add bone and organ meat. 70/30 is about as fatty as you can get ground beef where I live.

  6. Thank u.80/20 meat/fat were I am.but I'm adding chicken leg quarters and the organ meat.I think I should be fine?.....hopefully (I better prey lol)......

I have found that, like people, the dogs are as individualistic as all get out.

I too start the dogs at the lower end on the fat spectrum. My dogs get about, and that is a 'loose' about, 20% of fat content in their daily diet year around. I a dog is set for hard work I start about 8-10 weeks prior to the start of work and increase the fat content. Once or twice a week I will put him on the mill and push him really hard. If the stool gets loose I let up a little on the fat content. As long as the stool stays tight I continue to ramp the fat content. Somewhere between weeks 7 and 10 it is three times per week on the mill for a really hard session.

After 8-10 weeks some dogs are really high on the fat content, some dogs not so much. The high drive, high energy dogs, the ones that a person has to stop from working/pull back the reigns usually have the metabolism to burn higher fat content. The dogs that have to be 'worked' usually not so much.

After the 8-10 week acclimation to the high fat content diet the actual work starts. By that time he is burning fat for energy and the higher protein % is used for recovery purposes. Once the dog adjusts to fats for energy 1st, the dogs recover better from day to day. In turn the sessions can be even more intense and last even longer each day.

I use straight fat. I get a bucket every other day of the trimmed fat from rib eyes and briskets, and 3-4lbs of chicken fat/skins (it seems the whole world is going skinless on the chicken). Then I use the cow cheek as a really fatty red meat cut. I also boil a couple whole chickens so when I add liquid to their meals it is a really fatty juice/gravy flavoring.

I also drop a hunk of lard as well.

I use 70/30 hamburger if it is on sale. (As stated before I'm cheap).

The thing with a high fat content diet is it makes hydration even more important, not that it is a lesser concern any other time, but the increasing of fat can lead to a loose stool. Some times the loose stool is diarrhea like. This is a rapid loss of water.

Up that fat content too fast, get a loose stool and then work a dog that is not adequately hydrated and bad things happen. The outward sign is the dog blows hot and recovers and all is well. Odds are there will be some kidney issues at some point, usually some years down the road.

When the dog blows hot the first thing that comes to mind is the fat, so the fat made him blow hot. When it reality it was the dog be not adequately hydrated.

A gradual increase with some hard work helps the dog adjust/acclimate.

Once the hard work/keep starts I do not make many changes as I try not to risk losing a work day to something other than the dog simply not needing work/or he simply needs rest. I use the 8-10 week acclimation process and then I'm pretty much spot on where the dog needs to be fat/protein percentages. The amounts from there are adjusted to manage weight.

The stool should be a solid color that looks like straight shit. If it has a slime layer around the turd it is about to be loose. Whatever is causing it if it goes just little more in that direction the dog will pretty much shit through screen wire.

The problem is that takes a lot of water from the dog to blow squirts.

The object is not to get there.

  19. Thanks.my dogs stools are a solid color. And I've never seen them to lose if u get me?they do look like straight shit as well....the film around the stool seems to build up over a few weeks, and I'm convinced its worms.as I said soon as I see a slite trace of it I flee/worm them.and its gone instantly. With that said I never see a worm riggling round in the shit.(which is good I suppose) and I just presume that that film stuff is a sign to worm them?maybe I'm wrong?(crazy lol?):)).w,t,f, am I writing? Lol.....jokes a side its important to check your dogs stools.......I'm lucky to have understanding neighbor's lol.............

The Patrick/Mims cross may not be the best dogs ever but I would match them in calorie burning against any out there.
