Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by CanineAthletes, Mar 18, 2018.

  1. I don't no anything about that food lol,but it sounds great!...if his skin is bad of that food(I'm imagining its not cheap)then I don't think any other dry food will help.switch him over to raw completely. It should be cheaper for u :).Mr revolution is right about the kelp powder also alfeta powder is great both are minerals that can be given every day with out complaints....

I have the first two Billinghurst books & they the best reading any bulldog owner could buy. They far cheaper than most everything available too. I would recommend everyone to buy the first book & thank me later :-)

Chicken carcasses like Soze I use as the main ingredient. Cost very similar too. Carcasses I get include the neck, which I give once a week or so. Fast once fortnight. Salmon oil, barf complete supplement daily & the odd raw egg, offal, table scraps & veg which I throw in the juicer & package to freeze. The difference in the dogs was clear to the eye in everything from their coat, condition & all round attitude.
    Cost.......you may ask ??
Peanuts & in the past I have tried most all those so called top of range kibbles. . . Veg juiced (3).jpg Veg juiced (4).jpg

Freezer space is just about a must. Nailing down the free stuff helps a ton as well. Let friends and family know when they have freezer burned or the like, and you will take it off their hands. Deer hunters (for the most part, don't shoot me just yet) waste a lot of meat, organs and bones. Most need a place to dump the deer after cutting out the back straps.

Grocery stores now have a lot of rules about giving away 'old' stuff. Sometimes you can get a hook up and get some pretty good deals. Even the produce that is tossed is still good. A small country store with a meat section is a good source.

When ours closed my feed bull spiked. I miss them sorely.

Farmer's markets. Lots of people at the end of the week will toss things vs. hauling them home so they can bring fresh stuff back.

The extra effort can save a ton of money and feed a primo dog diet to boot.

I am fucked for freezer space (that may be my downfall with this diet) because my wife is storing breast milk for our baby girl in the freezer and it is taking most of the space. I would buy a deep freezer but I live in a condo and have no room! I will try and figure this out!

I have fed a ton of different ways.

One of the better runs I had was I once had an electric meat grinder. I sent any and everything thru that thing and mixed the foods in a big mixing bowl. Not always was it exactly balanced but it made storage easy. I put it 1lb. zip lock bags. They laid down flat and I could put a lot in a small space.

But I understand space being a constraint.

    Best of luck.

Slim,I have fed raw meat from tripe to chicken for over 30yr off & on,but what the Billinghurst books emphasise is the importance of the "bone" in the "bone & raw feed diet & by bone it means intact & not put through the mincer/grinder.
Intact, the dog has to work for its feed & work the body/muscles. It is also very important in keeping teeth & gums clean. Compare that to giving a dog a bowl of raw minced food which will be empty & licked clean in under 1min........

  16. I agree Finito!....and I no a dog can do well on raw meaty bones alone. The barf books out line it all.and help the reader understand the principles of feeding raw....also I have fed every type of raw food to dog's for about the last ten years, and I have noticed that the dogs thrived of it.especially when you mix it up!...that said, I have also noticed that just giving them one thing is no good. Variety is the spice of life....

  17. I agree..you do need freezer space.especially if you can get loads of scrap from the butcher and such a like...I new a butcher once.and he was about as dodgy as you could get.when the hourse meat scandal was happening a few years back in u.k.he come to me an said son how much freezer space have you got?I said not a lot, about 40 kg worth.he said that's good has any of your friends got any as well?I said yes I no 2 people who's got about the same space as me.he said great!!come quickly and I got lots of good stuff four your dogs.I said come on then and went and got a load of horse meat of him before the health and safety busted him!(seconds before!)...he would always have stuff for me.and he charged me next to nothing,I moved and got more dogs and it killed me.it really did.I miss him a lot...if you can find some one like that it will save you a lot,and your dogs will thrive!!!.....

    Agreed.

But like was mentioned before convenience is usually the kicker. During hunting season the dogs get a lot of deer bones. Outside hunting season not as much. I have couple of straight up brain surgeons that have never tasted the first thing they were fed. The just swallow and gag. They get more chicken backs and the chunks of red meat scraps. Leg quarters is a real risk with those two.

The bigger bones work better for my two brain surgeons, or a rack of ribs. For they slow down a hair to get the meat off the bones. Anything else they just swallow.

But so it goes with crazy ass Red Boy dogs.

And I do agree about the bones, and wish it were a little more convenient to get them for the dogs year around. The best I can do is with the leg quarters.

One of the other deals I had was sheep. We had a guy here that did the sheep in the 4 h club. If they walked whacky or if the walk suggested dysplasia he put them down. I was getting them for next to nothing. It was quite the hassle but more than worth the time and effort. The dogs loved the meat and the bones were a bigger part of their diet. In time, that faded.

I will be the first to admit I let the number of dogs out there dictate the quality of their feed. It should be the other way around.

The answer always seems to be back to the bag food to take eliminate the time, effort and inconvenience.

  20. could be anything from rice to pasta
yes I did notice a difference and after some research also found some articles backing the fact that dogs have been domesticated for so long there is a definite need for it , but than again these days u can find anytthing to support a theory
