here in Greece 1 year ago the government passed a law about pets.
all the dogs myst have a microchip under their skin.
i am against it because i think its violation of our rights and of course i didnt do it.
i just want to know your opinion and if there is the same or similar law in US.

I live in Canada and in the province I,m in there is no microchip law. I have had my pup microchipped anyway in the chance he ever got away or was stolen I would have a better chance of finding him. Hopefully this never happens being as he is well contained and constantly supervised, but one never knows and its better to be safe then sorry I think.

I chip, but I am against mandatory microchipping just because its too much government interference in our lives. Micro-managing. So far, it hasn't happened on any kind of grand scale. But there have been bills proposed to make microchipping mandatory, and some to make a dog get a 2nd microchip if their 1st isn't the correct frequency. Standardizing the type of microchip used in the US is a good idea, but forcing owners to get it done...

    I don't know. Nervous-making.

ETA: Maybe they could start by making it mandatory for shelter/rescue dogs. Or perhaps if one's dog ends up in the shelter, they chip it before it goes back out so they can readily identify a dog that's ending up in the shelter repeatedly. I've heard of breeders chipping pups before they're sold so that they know if the dog ever ends up in a shelter, and I think that's a good idea. There are ways chipping can be incorporated and be beneficial without triggering anybody's conspiracy theory sense.

ETA ETA: I just noticed I got a 2nd square on my rep scale. Can I squeal like a little girl? :D

    The three biggest lies
    1. My wife doesn't understand me.
    2. The check is in the mail.
    3. I am from the government and am here to help you.
I, unfortunately, am very leery of letting the government have any power. A certain amount is necessary, but we should put up with a certain amount of chaos and lawlessness just to keep the government off our backs. They think their job is to govern...that means "control". They are not the helperment. Every time they get an inch, they take a mile.
There are various proposed laws wanting to institute mandatory microchipping. How much do you trust your(our) government? What is the track record of the government in protecting our freedoms? Just things to think about.
My dog is microchipped, but I wonder if that was the right thing to do. "Just 'cause you're paranoid doesn't mean no one is out to get you."

All my dogs are microchipped and so is any pup that I place. It is though however a personal choice to do it not a law where I live. It is for the safety of the dogs.

Exactly what i was thinking. I mean if you are responsible you shouldnt worry about the micro chip. And from my understanding they dont actually track the dog down with GPRS just scan it when it come into the pound for identification.
Time will make it compuslory just like here, it was optional then compulsory.

I agree with what everyone else has said pretty much. My dog is microchipped but the government needs to back off some.

I am against all micro chipping. There was talk at one time of doing this same bs to soldiers a few years back. There is something very fishy about the microchip stuff and I don't trust the government. Call me paranoid but I think they want to track everything even us. I personally think the government is too large as it is and has far too much control. Not just here but in nearly all nations. I am not going to microchip a dang thing. I even fried the tracking device in my car. It is like the mark of satan all this tracking and microchipping crap. Give the government an inch and they take a mile. Soon they are watching you in your own house. Oh never mind that can be done allready. That is why I like to deal with cash or trade. I don't trust nothing. It was my job to hunt down people and frankly it is too damn easy. The average joe is an easy target. They chip your dog then ban them. Click they pop up on a screen and they just come take them. It is that simple. Register your guns. They ban them the come and take them ask some of them Canadians, Britts, Australia and so on. Hitler did it. It works great. So long as your not the damn peasant.

I personally microchip for the pure fact that it can be identified - if byu chance it gets loose!
Let me tell a quick story
my friend saw a apbt running loose in her neighborhood, she knew whose dog it was, she went to tell them their dog was running loose. They said that it wasn't their dog and said to leave them alone. Someone in the neighborhood called animal control and they came and picked up the dog. My friend calle dto tell them that the owners lived down the street. The animal controll said that they denied it was theirs. Well that put the dog in the pound. After me and my boyfriend found this out we were going to try and rescue it. My friend called to tell them that she found someone who would take it and they said that since there was no way to get the pets background history and vaccination history and that it was running stray with no owner that they wouldn't adopt out pitbulls. Well We really pushed trying to get this dog out. That afternoon they put the dog down- they told us over the phone we didn't have to worry about whose dog it was because the dog was destroyed.
I somewhat agree with the mandatory but then I don't -- if they were mandatory this dog wouldn't have been destroyed-
but i do think it is a personal choice if you want it or not

I microchipped my dog so that if she does get away from me, which is pretty unlikely, I'll have a chance to get her back. One thing you who have microchipped your animals need to do is check with whoever microchipped your dog and make sure they have the proper identification for you (address, phone etc.) to get in touch with you if your dog gets lost, stolen or picked up by AC. Some people who owned microchipped pets found out that the microchip record keepers had their records wrong!(read about this on another forum) Hard to return the dog with the wrong information...So double check that the microchip people have the right information.
Yes, to my understanding the microchips currently in use do not have GPS(global positioning satellite) information in them. Be handy if they did, then if your dog was lost you could just track it down...
After I had my dog microchipped I discovered that not all scanners in use by rescue societies and shelters/dog pounds can read all the microchips that are currently implanted in dogs. Makes the chips sort of useless if you local AC can't read your dog's microchip.
Well, what can I say? All technology can be used for good or for bad. The technology is neutral. I am old and cynical enough to realize that while microchips can serve wonderful purposes, they can also be used for sinister reasons too.

I actually got one put in my male and one soon in my female...I like it...if your dog gets lost, most of the time you can get him/her back. I like the concept.
