My Dog Recently Became Very Sick With Mastitis. After Several Trips To The Vets Office And Many Antibotics, Anti-inflamatories, Breast Pumps, Heat Pads And Everything Else You Can Imagine They Had Two Remove Two Of Her Breast. She Seems To Be Doing Better But We Will See. All Of The Puppies Are Healthy And Being Fed Goats Milk. I Did Not Realize How Serious Or Common Mastitis Is. I Hope No One Else Has To Go Thru What I Had To. The Things We Do For Our Babys. Just Had To Vent.

in the first few days after birth, it is normal for the breast's to become quite full but the breast should not feel hot, look red or have hard lumps in them.you could even start checking for these symptoms before the pups are born. check each nipple's milk.normal milk is a clean white color,it should not be grayish or sticky and definitley not blood-tinged.the colostrum(first milk) prodoced the first 24-48 hours will be a off-white color,a little thicker, somewhat translucent. if you see signs off mastitis start with antibiotics immediatley.mild to moderate cases caught quickly usally can be treated an the pups can still nurse from mother.

thanks for the support. all of the pups are almost 5 months and are really healthy. mudville definetly keep an eye on your female if you do breed.like crg said most cases can be fixed with antibiotics if caught early. i was caught gaurd and it came fast and furious. but the way i think is that if you love your dogs like i do you do what ever it takes to help them.

You need to very careful with that gyp if you breed her again... gyps that get it that bad have a tendency to get it with each litter. (I happen to have one of those)
Ca Jack has a protocol for that in his "Tips" book...we also had a friend whose gyp actually chewed off on of her own tits as it was causing her tremendous pain.
Best regards,

Classic

THANK YOU FOR THE FEED BACK. I AGREE. I AM GETTING HER FIXED ASAP. I DO NOT BELEIVE IN BREEDING A DOG THAT HAS TO MANY PROBLEMS. IF I WOULD HAVE KNOWN ANY OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPEN TO HER, I WOULD NOT HAVE BRED HER AT ALL. SHE IS THE NICEST DOG WITH GREAT QUALITIES, BUT TO SEE HER SUFFER IS NOT WORTH IT TO ME.

Mudville_Monsta, Mastitis is, swelling and inflammation of the breast in female dogs. Most common during pregnancy, and nursing. Mastitis is the inflammation process involving one or more mammary gland, which usually occurs during lactation. It is usually septic or aseptic in nature.
Causes Of Mastitis
Ascending infection via the nipples, penetrating wound, spread from other parts of the body and Aseptic condition included overproduction of milk, physical injury by pups, and insufficient number of pups to draw milk resulting in stasis of milk in the gland.

Symptoms Of Mastitis
The affected area is swollen, warm, and painful. The body temperature is elevated. Milk from the gland is usually mixed with puss and blood. It may have alkaline pH and more viscous than normal milk. Animal is listless, in appetence and no interest in pups.

Diagnosis Of Mastitis Made easily from the physical examination and herby milk sample should be collected for bacterial culture and sensitivity.

Treatment Of Mastitis
Application of hot packs at the affected areas. Opening and drawing of abscess to remove the puss and locally clean up the wound with antibiotic. Broad-spectrum antibiotics avoid tetracycline, amino glycosides or chloraphemicol, as it will go to the pups through the milk. This should be accompanied with supportive therapy. The pups should be put on the diet artificially till this problem is solved.

Hello Waters...

IMO it is not a cause to have her spayed !
It can be dealt with fairly easily if you only use Jack's protocol.
If you are interested...I will look for the book and send you the protocol.
