Lost bark...

My 12 year old dog, who never stops barking, has suddenly lost his bark. He keeps trying but it's just raspy and barely there. Otherwise he seems perfectly fine - his grumpy old self. Does this seem like something to get him to the vet over, or more of a wait and see kind of thing?

IMO it's nothing to worry about. I too had a constant barker, who lost her voice for a while. I chalked it up to strained vocal cords. She eventually got better, but not completely due to never completely stopping barking.

I've seen a couple dogs that this happened to, although I've never had one. From what I've encountered theres nothing you can do and it doesnt effect their general health. But then again, this is just what the owners told me. Im sure someone has some better info. Call up the vet tomarrow and ask him over the phone.....

Well I had a pup that was 5 months old that swallowed a sock and stopped eating and drinking cost me $ 800.00 to find out his stomach was upset, no blockage, this is just the way it goes if you are breeding the right stock.

LOL like I said, just from what I've heard. But then again, they were all just old dogs who had been barking all their lives, not a 5 month old pup. 800 bucks for a sock huh? The other one better of been made out of gold for that price.....lol.

This happened to a dog I knew. I put it down to him getting old. His legs were stiff and his nose grey, but he would bark at the cars coming up the drive like he did as a young dog - only barely making a sound. Never easy to see them getting old. Anyways, that could be one explanation.

I've had it happen to dogs as young as 8 weeks, from barking all the time. Strained vocal chords. They'll eventually strengthen up and the barking will resume. It's something I never worry about.

It's funny about the sock, Marty, but it definitely sucks about the 800 bucks. I had one walk around for a couple days with a sock hanging half-way out of his ass. He finally passed it but I was getting worried there for awhile.
