i use a 2 inch seatbelt material collar and nylon rope leash. i think spike collar an chain leash is just for looks and gives people the wrong impression about our breed. imo i hate the spike collar an chain leash.

I was wondering what to use for a show...

    For a show...it must be a buckled collar and a 4ft. lead...

I'm sure you can get away with a shorter or longer lead, but the collar must be a buckle type collar, and if i were you I'd steer clear of "spiked" collars...

If Im just walking my dog I walk him, or her in a harness more comfortable on the dog. I put a 10` lead on and when possible I give it all to them. Show ring has to be regular buckled collar and 4` lead.

OUR YARD IS PROBABLY TWO OR THREE TIMES THE SIZE OF MOST FANCIERS YARDS. AND WE HAVE PRODUCED AND USED OUR OWN HEAVY DUTY MACHINE SEWN COLLARS. THAT CONSIST OF 2" WIDE MATERIAL, HD V92 THREAD, AND HD HARDWARE. THE HARDWARE IS A BIT BIGGER, AND ALOT HD THAN THE TRADITIONAL HARDWARE FOUND ON OTHER TWO INCH COLLARS. The best collars I have used have been Hurricane Kennels’ collars. They are super strong; feel like silk to the touch, but a bit pricey for a whole yard. Ray at Bulldog Supply makes a real nice nylon collar. I have them on all of my dogs. They are strong, durable, and don’t give the dogs any problems with rubbing. They are also very affordable for even the largest of yards.

I forgot to add that I have also got some dog equipment from Crossfire Kennels and am real pleased. Reasonable prices, product, and delivered in a timely manner. So if anybody is looking for some dog supplies any of these kennels will treat you right.

Why am I not surprised she asked this question? haha Anyways, the main reason you do not want to use a spike collar and chain leash is because it shifts focus from the dog, and on to the flashy collar and leash. You want something as small and discrete as possible so all of the focus will be on the dog and nothing else. Now, I do not show in the ADBA, but I use a Martingale that is 4 foot length black nylon rope and 3/8 inch width.

I use a 2" nylon collar on my pups right now from pet smart, and from the time I got them to now I've been useing a chain leash. The chain leash makes it easier careing the leashes from my home to my business. Had I known that it could make people think my dogs are mean or that it takes away from there appearance I would never got a chain leash. But I do know when they get about a year old I will have to get a nylon leash. I also use a nylon harness to walk them.

    carson3535,

I think a chain leash is fine if that is your preference, just not at a dog show.

I use a thick nylon color and about a 4ft nylon lead, i also have a chain leash i use for pups learning how to walk, because they try to bite the nylon one, but they don't bite anymore when they bite that chain lead..

Chain lead is good because it won't break thats about it. But they really don't offer much control, if your dog pulls when he see's another dog. These are not comfortable leashes. Go with the rope leash.

LOLLLL...I wish I would put a 3/8 thick rope on one my dogs and take them to a show or even walk them on it..lol agian..thats about as safe as walking one with a rubber band. The safest way to control a dog at an ADBA show or just walking them is a good sturdy 2-4ply collar, and a strong nylon leash with a good snap. I personally use a 2in 4ply collar for chain setups and when I go to shows I use a 1 1/2 in collar, and a 4ft nylon leash. I use smaller collars when I attend shows becuase a huge collar on a dog takes away from the dog. The first thing the Judge is going to see is the collar if it is big. You want the dog to stand out not the collar. JMO....;)
