a keep is very stressful on a dog....just lower his feed, and walk him, run, spring pole and anything else u can think of.

Feed your dog high quality food and even vitamins during a keep. As the keep progresses, try to lower his water intake. The excercise regime alone calls for more nourishment.

it will never make sense to me the idea of feeding a dog less food while physically making him work hard. i guess you can come to the pull with an animal lacking energy and strength and get beat?

feeding the dog less doesnt mean it gets one kibble a day...

u shouldnt lower his feed at any stage in the keep (i mean than regular everyday life).

If you don't know what your doing you should do tons more research before you put your dog in a dangerous situation. A keep takes a lot out of a dog. Don't do the keep, exercise more and feed a tad bit less. What do you plan to do with the dog anyhow?

  12. For us newbies...what is a KEEP?

A special conditioning program you put your dog through!

  14. A keep is a conditioning program set prior to a MAIN event. A "keep" is comparable to what boxer and MMA practitioners go through in order to be READY for a match. Show-bred dogs may go through a sort of keep to define their bodies and give them the best opportunity to win that ribbon.

A basic "Keep" will contain the following:

A schedule of exercise routine from day # to day zero (show date).
A schedule of feed by type and amount.
A Schedule of supplements by type and amount.

Please note that a "pre-keep" is in order. A pre-keep will condition a dog enough to be ready for a "keep". A pre-keep will also give you an idea of a dog's best (peak-conditioned) weight. Learning your dog's "best weight" is very important. It is the difference between winning and loosing.

Please note that merely jogging with your dog or changing his diet does not constitute a keep. Again, a keep requires almost as much from the HUMAN as it does the dog.

Ok I'm also new here and I would like to know what does a dog physically do while in a keep?

  16. I will give it to you in general terms (keeps vary depending on dog abilities, strengths and conditioner preferences):

    Running (sprints and endurance)
    mouth work
    strength work
    agility work

Again, depending on the dog's individual needs and conditioner preference, work may be done free of machinery or using available equipment.

Once again I will rephrase my question. What are some examples of what some of you have your dogs do while in a keep?

  18. I do not know if I can post historical keeps on this site. I am sure many members have them on file, so it may be against the rules to post them.

What site could I look it up on. I have tried to research it,but found nothing. Do you or anyone for this matter know where the info can be found and next time instead of giving fragmented information, please just say that you don't know if it can be posted or not. Thank you!

  20. Yeah, I'll tell you the sites (sarcastically speaking)...after your disrespectful post below, I won't even tell you the time!

Although my posts were general, those with conditioning experience will quickly know what running, mouth work, and strength work entails. If specifics are needed in order for you to understand, YOU ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE TO READY FOR A KEEP. Basics are in order for you!
