Yes they are the same..They are good with kids but never leave them unsupervised with small kids, this breed is highly prey driven..They are Terriers so no they dont get along great with other dogs they will tolerate them until the other tries to show dominance..These dogs are small but a handfull.Very destructive if they dont get the right amount of excercize. When I was a younger man I got 2 male Jack Russell's that was my first pair and I couldnt tell you how many fights I broke up..I now pair them male and female without many problems at all.Lost a male in a thunderstorm one night he weighed 18lbs stayed gone for 3 days when he came home he was 21 lbs.Just giving you a idea of the tenacity of these dogs.

Might be worth checking out the Patterdale site on this forum also German Hunting Terriers. Make sure you really want one first and be careful what you wish for.

i was always led to believe that although the same breed, the parson terrier was more likely to have a straight front and be higher in the leg than your every day jack russel which many are known to have queen anne fronts.[IMG][IMG]

Parsons is a conformation show variety of the Jack Russell..thats the difference ,the Parsons were recognsied as the Jack Russell Terrier in America in 1997.So its the same thing I guess it depends if you want one from working lines or show lines..OP is looking for a pet for his son so one prob as good as the other..And its not easy to find people who work thier Terriers anymore.

I think all international kennel clubs now recognise them as Parson Jack Russell Terrier.

The parson terrier and jrt are the same thing Jonh russell started the breed in the 1800's and he mixed them with a whole bunch of terriers and most people considered them a type of dog instead of a breed, until 97 they were not recognized by the akc(as mentioned above)great dog I've had a few very energetic very smart great with familly,

in England the KC reccognise the parson terrier but not the jack russell, although they are the same breed to many people.
also i have never heard of anybody selling papered jack russells, in England. they used to be £20 from working parents the same with lurchers. lol

Jacko the 2 should seperate more over time,They will eventually become 2 different breeds as long as u have people who still use them for hunting. The Irish now claim to have a Irish Jack Russell Terrier I dont know anything about those.I live in the southern United States we dont use the Jack Russells for digging but for small game such as Squirrell and Rabbits..Only problem I have with mine is they are good when squirrell hunting or rabbit hunting as long as something else doesnt cross thier path lol.Been a problem with others I have talked to and some people here will mix a little fiest blood in the mix and it tones them down a bit makes a more focused dog..I dont mine are pure as far as I know ,,I had papers with all and never registered any of them. The body styles differ here to I see short legged more muscular and long legged more stream line..I am not up on correct conformation ,never cared as long as they could perform.I had good luck with both short and long legged. But the first pair I had over 20 years ago were the best ones I ever owned and I should have bred both. They were 18 to 21 lbs .Crazy Crazy prey drive. One of those dogs name was Tanner and when he was a pup about 6 months old I let him and the other dog come inside that night it was very cold.I woke up and couldnt find Tanner ,he had chewed a whole in the wall and got inside the walls to catch a mouse and got stuck so I had to tear part of the wall out to get him.Crazy dogs lol.

by the way in my research the jack and parson are diff. the jack is more of a working type and the parson is more shorter and use in the show. and regarding their health they are one of the most healthy dogs and they live up to 15 years...

wow... they are really a working type.;) love terrier breeds. how about with kids? are they good with children? I have a gamebred pitbull and basically he is very game and have a high prey drive. but when it comes to my son he is so sweet. are the jack russel are also like that? have a high prey drive but when its come to children are they good? tnx

Jack Russells are good with kids but like I said you got to watch them around small kids, they wont tolerate rough handling and they dont like to have stuff taken away from them such as toys, food, bones ..Just keep a eye on it..Small kids dont know any better ..I caught my nephew when he was about 4 was trying to stick his finger in one of my dogs eyes..So you have to watch constantly and correct the dog and the child.I caught it right away no harm done but one of those things if your not watching could turn bad.Now I can take anything away from my dogs without any problem, but you never know how they will act when a small child does.

yes jrt"s are not to good around younger children as bamaman says, they can be very snappy.
as for getting on with other dogs they are well known for starting trouble !

Although Jack Russell's can live 15years +, statistically they often have short lives due to their habit of finding and getting into trouble.
