Hello, Ive been on here a little while and gave no formal intro. I'm in southern Missouri .I've been int APT's my whole life, mostly as pets, did some reascue, foster work in south Fla.It's been about a year and a half since I lost my ole buddy Buelle (rip) and hve'nt commited to a new pup since then,Ive been concentrating on starting a new buisness. Now with that up an going I'm ready to get back into my real passion.Decided to go with staffords for various reasons ,but thats another story.

    Back to point:
I'm building kennels to house the dogs when need be, and lookin for some advise.

The dogs will each have 5'x5' inside quarters with a bed .
Q : Which would be better, epoxy sealed wood, or concrete for the floor?

They will also each have 10'x10' outside kennels.
Q :Will sand box sand be ok for the yards? I was thinking that it would Be easy to clean and not to hard on the pups For laying arround/ playing.
    :)
    Any advice would be appreciated,

    Thnx all,
    hmots

  2. on the lots concrete is better on the cleanin it'll also keep there nails filed on the outside i preferr cedar shaving keeps down the fleas and smell better than sand

they have those 24x24 concrete pavers that cost about 5-6$ roughly per piece. it would be cheaper to get than to spend money on a whole concrete patio for the dogs kennel run. its still very easy to wash off.

i would say that if you use the 4x8 then yes they will look sloopy over time and look like shit after its settled in the ground. the big 24x24 look nicer and are easier to do and keep the dog really clean. the one thing that i will give you credit on is debris from the wash down will get in between the pavers. i just use bleach/water to clean it up and kill the germs. . the 24x24 just gets the dog off the ground because its only inside the kennel half the day and then comes in when i get home. the dog basically waits to piss and shit till i get home. the dog never goes in the kennel i have. i want to add 4 more pannels there to give more room, so the dog has some grass to lay on their. maybe next year. the 4th pannel would cover the top so the dog doesn't jump out. its what i did though and it works. is it the best setup hell no its not lol, but its not sloppy like you said

I never once said it was sloppy. I was just implying if your gonna do it do it right. Maybe I read it wrong, but the oP said they would have a 5x5 living quarters. Which I imagine is inside a building. So you would use concrete and not pavers.

Living quarters are going to be in a building so the Q is wood sub w/ epoxy rolled on the wood to seal it and up the walls bout 6 in. so any mess doesnt seap under the walls, or concreate which would no doubt hold up better but thought the wood/epoxy might be warmer in the winter.

no you were right i was just adding in another option he/she could go with. concrete would be the overall better way to do than the pavers i used. it was just that i choose the pavers better to do because of the price on the kennel alone was so expensive. if my yard was fenced i would do chain myself. its cheaper and more room for the dog to move around. well good luck hmots on your choices

I wouldnt go with the wood covered with epoxy. What will happen over time moister will make ist way from the bottom of the boards up and the epoxy will start to delaminate and peel off.I would go with concrete over the pavers as well ,with the concrete you can slope it or put a drain in .Easy to clean and once its down no more messing around.

one of the best methods is to tile the floor and skirting ,(drainage optional) it"s hygenic and hard wearing, just re-grout as needed,

Tile would be really nice. I wonder how a restaurant kitchen style tile would do. Wouldn't look as nice, but I wonder if it would hold up longer?

Thing about tiles ,I think they could be kind of a slippery surface.

I'm gonna go with the concrete sub floor it will just hold up better ,going to go w/ the sawdust outside.I'll keep posting w/ progress pics as it comes together.
I appreciate all the feed back guys

you can get non-slip tiles like they use in public baths, it all depends on how much you want to spend. red or yellow quarry tiles are popular with boarders and some police kennels(which having been unfortunate enough to notice) lol

I'm also looking into a dog kennel. There's a company called the mason company which has some very nice outdoor dog kennels but it looks expensive as hell. I'm gonna call them tomorrow for a quote. Anybody here have any of their kennels?
