Increasing water intake

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by BestInShow, Oct 17, 2011.

  1. What tricks does everyone use to make their dogs drink more water?

  2. Pour it on the kibble and wait a few min for it to soak it up

thats what we used to do but we dont feed kibble anymore. For some of our dogs it works to put nupro in the water, just curious what else others do.

If you can get some LOW SODIUM chicken broth and add a little most dogs will like that. But I wouldn't do it with regular chicken broth, too much salt.

tablespoon of honey in the water . first let them taste it and then let them see you put it in the water . if they have enough alot of water in them them they still won't drink much . but do like boogie siad and you can add it to raw . 10 oz .'s is a good start .

adding water to food (raw or dry) adding fish oil, an egg, a few tablespoons of rice, honey,....all work for me with difficult drinkers.

    Thanks everyone, keep it coming...

  9. DP when you feed raw they will naturally take in a lot less water. As long as they aren't dehydrated I wouldn't sweat it. When I fed raw my dogs hardly ever drank water. They get it from the raw. Kibble naturally makes them drink a ton more.

true, and the moisture is like everything in raw taken very efficiently by the body. not much is wasted. on kibbles they drink tons to much, also because theres salt in them.

I do the same, Nupro's the shit! Works especially well when feeding raw!

    Nope that´s wrong!
Don´t mistake wet substance that lower your dogs thirts as water intake!
If you feed a high protein diet, such as to be considered raw, they do have to drink to get the waste of the eaten stuff (i. e. proteins) out of their liver / kidney!!!!!
High protein levels are a fine thing but always guided by a good water intake!
Thing is if you for example eat a bread, then you are thirsty, if you are eating an apple you have less desire to drink afterwards but you didn´t have a decent water intake!
My english isn´t good enough to point out some things in the right terms maybe but I hope you will get an understanding of what I tried to tell you!

Why do your dogs need to drink more water? Are they dehydrated? If so, there is something wrong with your feed or the way you are working them.

I have one dog that just doesn't drink enough water. It hasnt even gotten cold yet and she has gotten happy tail. Doesn't matter whether she is being worked or not and doesnt matter if its hot or cold. SHe just doesnt drink much water and she will have happy tail all winter. Nupro is the only way to get her to drink more water that i have found.

I don't use alot, half a teaspoon...enough to stir in the water and mix! They lap it all up. Another thing I do is squeeze the fish oil caps.

thats not too true of a statement and is actually backwards. the dogs raw food has has all the moisture that is needed to digest properly and give the body the amount of water it needs to keep hydrated. thats why they drink less. dry dog food has all the moisture removed, so thats why the dogs brain tells it to drink more water. you may want to add a cup of water too a raw diet to add a bit more water to the when working them though. if not working them i would not be worried because the dog will drink when its needed on raw. i usually with hold the dog's food every sunday or once a week when not working him. that does the cleansing of the digestive track and organs that you are mentioning.

yeah those are the things i usually do flipside, i was just curious what other options were out there. Figured more people would have a water stubborn dog than just me. Its not that big of a deal to do but i was just asking out of curiousity. Never know when someone can give you a tip that is more efficent than what you're already doing...

  20. That's some of the dumbest shit I ever did hear.
