We made a hunt on Thursday night for one of the local farmers. He called and said he had seen a few hogs out around the crop. We loaded up and dropped the tailgate at around 11pm. It turned out to be a false alarm...the hogs weren't there. All we have to show for it was a photo op for the dogs.

Hopefully we'll have better luck next week...until then, here's a couple of pics from previous hunts.

My buddy couldn't find a stick to hold the mouth open so he was trying to stay outta the pic as much as possible.
It's hard to get action pics unless you have someone dedicated to do so. Our first concern is getting to the hog to help the dogs and minimize injuries. From about April to Oct we run the dogs at night due to the heat (we don't won't to have to fool around with heat stroke!). Even when we have enough folks along to man a camera, it's real difficult to get a good action shot at night.

Here's one I have during a day hunt a little over a year ago. There's plenty of dogs in the pic because we had multiple teams running large acreage from different directions. When the bay started we were a ways off with the catchdogs so most of the strike dogs got to the bay before we were close enough to release the catchdogs. This hog weighed in at 250 field dressed.

No he didn't grab a hand LOL, but he did hook my son's arm when he was being dispatched. If you look closely at the second pic you'll see a white t-shirt between my son (on the right) and the hogs head.

I'm seeing a wide variety of colors and breeds. Whats in there? A catahoula or two?

Strike/bay - Seek out and find the hog, once they find it they bay it (hold it where it is by any means necessary...bark, nip, bite). Basically they just aggravate it by working back and forth at the head barking at it. If the hog tries to run, they will usually grab a hold where ever it is convenient (ear, tail, nads) to get it to stop, then they resume barking.

Catch - Predominantly bulldogs...they go in and catch the hog on the ear, jowl, snout, or head and hold it until the hunter can dispatch the hog. No barking out of these warriors. They better catch and catch hard.

The strike/bay dogs will also catch small hogs (under 150 pounds) if they are gritty, and everyone of ours will "me too", or catch when the bulldogs catch.

    3 catahoulas, 1 blackmouth cur, 2 cur x, 3 bulldogs.

We usually take 4 strike dogs and 3 or 4 catchdogs. Better to have too much catch power than not enough.

BAMA do you ever have any of the bulldogs start scraping with each other instead of the hog??

The ones that try are either educated quickly and conform, or they are culled.

For the most part, they are raised catching hogs and they know when they are vested it's time to go to work. If they hear a dog bark when they are in the woods, they just know a hog is at the end of it. They know they are there for the hog not the dogs.

We'll start them on piglets and let them catch 20-30 pounders when they are 12 weeks old. Then when they turn 6 months we'll put them on one about 50-60 pounds. The pigs are always small enough to let them think they are invincible. In other words we don't put them on anything they can't/shouldn't handle. Once there adult teeth set (usually between 8-10 months) we'll take them to the woods and release them with an experienced catchdog. You don't want them to take a whippin' there first time out (although the pit in the first pic was on a bad one his first time catching...at least there were 2 other catchdogs to help him out).

Man I would be willing to capture that on video. We used to use Plott hounds and Bull Dogs hunting Bear, did some hog hunting too with some buddies down in south west Arkansas. Even got on some cat hunting. I grew up hunting coon with the plotts and my old first shirt got me on bear and the other stuff man I was hooked on hunting any thing I could eat. I don't eat them cats but them panthers are no joke. I sure love to eat them hogs though. got me a 55 gallon drum grill just for that stuff. I tell you what that sure is some good timing there in those photos damn good looking dogs too. I ran Black and Tans for a while too. They were nice but not as nice as the Plotts to me. I know every one has a favorite hound for baying, striking and a favorite for catch. One thing about the plotts is they wouldn't back down even when they should have before back up came in. Thats a fine brood of dogs you got there.

What lines of Pitbulls do you use for this sort of work ? It seems like you'd really have to select for low dog-aggression and I was wondering how that worked?

Cool pics, pease keep posting, very interesting.

Thats a great picture of all the dogs on the hog. I would like to be able to do that! I don't think there are many hogs around here though.

Yes that's something I'd like to see too Twiztid.

I'm not sure if there are wild hogs around here or not but I know there are up in the mountains (I'm in NC too...:)) I'm in like the foothills though, so may be some back off in the real country parts. I know we got coyotes here, I hear them at night a lot.

Hmmmm come to think about it, I THINK hog hunting is illegal in NC though.....
