what do i need to take into consideration when crossing bloodlines? for example, if i'm looking for a game dog with some mouth. i'd say ok, since redboy is a deep game dog i'd look for some redboy blood, along with some boudreaux blood for great mouth. obviously, i'd need good parents and a good breeder. but also, what percentages would i need to be 'successfull'? 50% redboy 50% boudreaux, probably doesn't exist, because there's not too many pure blood's out there. let me know..thanks.

This is a more complicated question... IMO, its different for each person because everyone sees things differently...

When looking for a cross I start with my bitch, evaluate her strengths and weaknesses and then look for a male that compliaments her. Now bloodline does come into play but only as a reference, not as a must, making sense so far? Let me see if I can explain a bit more..... If I have a bitch that is a solid female, with a weakness in the wind department I would begin looking for a dog with similar traits that has excellent wind.. After I find the dog or dogs that would match with her in traits (both phycially and mentally) then I'd take a look at the lines and see what the ancestors may contribute to the breeding as well..

This is a more general description then what you are asking for, but until you see different lines and different dogs off those lines its not realistic to form an opinion on them....

Either I'm babbling or its coming across like it kinda makes sense..lol

This is an excellent point. I think too often people try to just go by what they hear you have to go out and evaluate a certain line before you just take peoples word for it. If anyone is going to be serious about breeding this is a life long hobby you just cannot base it off of others opinions and then buy dogs just from that line and hope. You have to go out and visit people with different lines and form your own opinions.

makes excellent sense, and I appreciate the feedback. i'm just now getting into this. got my first tab/rascal dog couple mths back. not looking to get into [], but would like to know that i have a strong and game dog. what i'd like to do is get a female and at least try 1 breeding and see how i like it. then go from there. so far from my readings i see that tab/jeep is 'always' hot, redboy is the top, chinaman is overated, boudreaux can close his mouth but can't go the distance, and bolio a well rounded dog

I aplaud you on doing research before you breed. But please do not generalize a bloodline from what you hear especially over the internet. When asking questions on a message board you don't know if the person answering your question really knows about the bloodline or they are just regurgitating information that they, in turn heard from a questionable source.

To really do research you will have talk to breeders and hopefully get out to some of their yards. If you are lucky enough to strike up a friendship you may be able to find out what a bloodline is all about. To give you an example you say Chinaman is overrated. Half the people out there say that because they don't line T. Garner or they just heard things about him that they are repeating. I have read that red boy dogs are dumb. Well the guy that I got my first dog off of had some of the tightest red boy stock in the country straight from R.E. Bass and they were far from dumb soft mouth dogs. But if I just went by what I have read that's what I would think about them.

Instead of looking at specific bloodline you need to look at the breeder. Just because someone has Jeep bred dogs they are not the same as everyone's else's Jeep bred dogs. Breeders have different breeding program and they breed differently so just because they started with the same stock does not always mean that the two are at the same point in the end.

Good luck in your continuing research.

How to learn to outcross? People normally start outcrossing when a dog is so tightly bred that it starts losing its great traits, such as mouth, etc. etc. When outcrossed, these traits can quickly come back.

Be careful when outcrossing, because every dog produces differently in each line.

Very complicated subject. IMO, it takes years of trial and error to develop a good sense of what crosses will work, and which ones won't. I was born into a breeder family, so I have been educated in this matter for as long as I can remember, have a solid grasp on genetics, but I'm still trying to figure this stuff out. Sometimes you can cross two very successful lines and end up doing nothing but diminishing what makes either line successful. Right now I'm feeding some exceptional dogs on my yard. Their blood consists predominately of Redboy/Jocko (heavy Yellow - Big John) with an ample percentage of Tombstone/Bolio. They are outstanding 2-hour gamedogs with fantastic ability, good wind, high intelligence, and... unfortunately, only average mouth. So I want to add mouth to my line but I don't want to take away from the other traits that make my dogs what they are. In addition to the Tombstone/Bolio, there is a little Maverick further back in the ped, so I pick up this little guy and one of his sisters in hopes that because of the common blood (Mav-Tombstone/Bolio) they'll cross well with my current line while adding mouth and maintaining the other desirable traits.

Of course, I have no way of knowing if it will work until I try it, but logic tells me it should.
    Outcrossing is tricky business.
