Hello all. I have a dog. Super duper intelligent. Built like the dog in the avatar. But very protective of house and wife. I do hand feed do so no more food aggression. And get this doesn't like alot of petting. Listen to every command and I can handle when he is doing his spring pole. But petting gets a low growl. I know Gary Hammond makes alot of excuses for this type of dog and it's not tolerated by most owners. If u could send me your thoughts would be greatly appreciated it.

I know how u feel. First time I have come across this myself. We tend to do this every time we don't have the answer.

Was reading alot of good dogs were given a pass. He is st Benedict lines. I think T.G blood has some issues with this. I don't like making excuses and no matter how good would never let him be bred but every thing else on him is a double check except the low growl.

Depends on how he is handled.

If he is chained and does not have access to children, then he can be a bulldog. If he is going to be a bulldog and a family member then the bar moves up a lot higher.

My son could interact with all of my puppies and any of the dogs who did not have experience. Once experienced they were off limits.

I have had one dog that I really thought would bite me just because I was in his spot. That was dealt with without hesitation. I have had a couple that would turn and bite at me in order to be released if they were all geeked up. For me, and it is a totally personal decision/opinion, but this gets a pass.

I hate to attribute it to a family of dogs as it spreads like wildfire. I have a Mims male with a Garner out and he will do anything to get back to where he wants to be. I know that going in so there is not a surprise like, "He never did that before".

End of the day the decision is based on what works at your house, not mine, or any one else's.

If I had an action plan it would be to repeat the situation in a controlled enviroment as many times as you can with it ending on a positive note.

Thanks Slim. Yes no kids around. And I am trying a few things like u mentioned. And he is definitely not like pure beast or I would have to say sorry.

Growling is a threat display, if you want to tolerate a dog that thinks it can threaten you, well.....

Check the scar on nose and top lip, happened twenty plus years ago courtesy of a Boudreaux/Stonewall dog.

I'm good with what I am good with at my house. What works for me may not work for others and vice versa and I am good with that.

I agree there are times when that decision has to be made and I have had to make it here. How someone comes to that decision is on them.

A 'true' fix will be to see if you are now able to revert back to feeding the dog in the same manner in which it showed you aggressive behavior because in my opinion the underlying problem still exists.

(a house dog should have a sound, reliable disposition otherwise you would probably end up changing your behavior to accommodate the dog....good luck).

...nah slim will be busting out his Floyd Mayweather moves to stay out of reach...lol.

Sometimes you just need to give them work to do. Put there ass on a hog if you can let them catch something. Take them through a hard keep and let them get the pent up agression out to cool them off. Me personally never worried about the growler it's the one wagging it's tail acting like everything is cool till you turn your back and then they flip the switch. Or you could just rub his nuts a few hours lmfao

Yeah Ben channeling that aggression is looking like the best thing. It takes long because he will do spring pole run on side of bike flirt pole. Then he's much better even for couple days. I would hate to not even try and just give up. I know over the years alot of dogs have been lost just through lack of knowledge. In alot of cases it seperates success. I know some guys don't like giving up the trade secrets. I will try everything before. Thanks again

I once went out with this hot chick but man she had issues but she was super hot so I did my best to manage her and it lasted a good year till my buddies convinced me it wasn't worth it. So we parted. U know one of them scooped her up and they still married. Mind u she still got major issues and my buddy has paid for it. But man what hottie.

Good analogy I suppose. Especially if you didn't really like the guy in the first place. LOL

    Ben gives good advice.

For me, and this is just for me and works for me, I find it is much harder to find a bulldog than to find a cur. I think anyone can find a cur as long as they are willing to look and pursue "cur" being the end result.

For me, and again just me, bad habits are just another obstacle into finding a bulldog.

When it is late on Saturday night I know what I am going to ask the dog to do so if I have to put up with some shit or work thru some rough areas then I do that or settle for the fact I was looking for a piece of shit in the first place....and found it.

But it is relative as well. My dogs stay outside. They are chained in a fenced in area. Now that my son is grown, and we live on the end of the road in the middle of the woods, I can have bad habits that some can't. A growl or a nip at me to let him go when there is another in his sights I work thru until the point I know I am not going to get where I want to go.

I have had one dog in all these years that pretty much told me owned that spot and I would adhere to his rules. . I was to the understanding he was just renting that spot as long as he paid rent or until he paid enough rent to earn lifetime rights to the property. The final explanation was swift and final.

I had a Mims/Bolio/Eli male that did not like to being handled on and off the chain. Once off and on lead he was fine. When working he was fine. When being handled while working he was fine, even when geeked up. Getting the collar on and off him was a handful and if I did not know that going in I would have been bit. He was one of the few dogs I ever had to trust a bull snap over a collar ring. This dog during the on and off the chain would be considered a man biter. I know a number of T-totalers that would have knocked him in the head the very first time.

He ended up picking up 2 W's and I placed him with a buddy who used him as a stud dog. He went to a secure setting with a knowledgeable dog handler/owner who used him. He never threw any dogs with his collar issues/being handled on the chain.

If I had pulled the proverbial trigger (no pun intended) it is 2W's I never get and a couple three good dogs I never experience.

Just like everything in these dogs, it is relative. What works for me at my house may not work for others at theirs and vice-versa.

    If that makes sense.
