I am surprised to hear that they were English teachers (if they are alive, thank them for their years of educating) considering how "fast and loose" you use the language: "the science and health effects are known very well." "people have been smoking for a long time with no problems". I think most epidemiologist would disagree with these statements. In Judging Science, the authors show how difficult it is to establish (statistically significant) cause and effect in epidemiology. Biology is tough. If you don't believe me, pick up the Nobel Laurette in Physics R. Laughlin's book "A Different Universe". The body is both an open and closed system which means it is subject to the second law of thermodynamics and external-internal perturbations (smoke/drug). What do we know about how smoke effects the lungs. Can you refer me to a peer-reviewed paper or an empirically based, properly vetted statement or two about this? From my understanding, most studies are lacking definitive links because subjects have other
variables (tobacco) that may (likely) contribute to the observed output. The Reuters article wasn't as rigorous as it needed to be but i wouldn't consider it propaganda. Yes, parents do need to be more responsible "across the board" but don't hold your breath. I did not know that orange juice and black pepper corn curbs the effects of cannabis; "eating sweets" sounds a bit suspect considering i have a major "sweet tooth".............but i digress. I couldn't tell you why they stopped the contest but i got the impression that the gatherings were more for Dogmen to show case their dogs abilities than to serve some practical function. Whats the deal with the pictures? It is okay if you don't want to share. I really enjoy looking at dogs. What line(s) are you feeding/breeding?

Yes, i understand your perspective. We have had this conversation before. My position is partly based on System Dynamics (Physics/Engineering), Developmental Systems Theory (Biology) and a priori knowledge. I think you should step back and take a coarse-grained view of the problem/issue. One of my favorite quotes from N.N. Taleb's book "The Black Swan" is " we tend to learn the precise, not the general". In other words, try to understand related and/or more fundamental domains: Be a polymath not an expert (not that they necessarily are mutually exclusive). Or you could just recuse yourself....

BREEDING 101 ....(or how breeding is like car maintenance)
    1. Know what you're looking at when you check your oil.
    2. Check the oil, check the oil, check the oil.
    3. Breed.
    4. Give good care and fuel.
    5. Know when to check the oil.
    6. Check the oil, check the oil, CHECK THE OIL!
    7. Recognize when someone else has checked their oil well and occasionally borrow their car.
    8. (See #1. above)
    9. Check your oil against other oil not just your own oil.
10 Repeat steps as needed, then make sure YOU CHECK YOUR OIL AGAIN.

It is as simple or as complicated as you want to make it, but theory alone has never impressed me, just well checked oil, lol

well you know sometimes if your around all the teachers you just do your own thing . but i did pay attention to them and learned real good and will always remember my grandmother telling me reading is the most important thing . all though out history the first thing they do is burn the books when they want to control you . here's some reading for you .

  7. Gene-centered views on development and genetic deterministic concepts are outdated and seems to be invalidated by current (and not so current) literature. You can find solid counter-examples to most of whats been said on this thread regarding genes in the popularized works of Lewontin, Gould, Venter, Jablonka, Margulis etc. Not to mention what some one versed in philosophy of science, history of science and/or epistemology would have to say about the matter.

I do believe that the "driver" is a significant component which is why it is imperative , in my opinion, for the "driver" to know the rules of the road before proceeding to insure (pun intended) sustained and extended quality of output ( no crashes). Most folks know and fear this so they spend their time looking (and slipping) backwards (invoking distant surnames) for direction instead of maintaining the coarse or even innovating.

One way of gauging how well a "driver" is doing is by making note of the type of feathers he or she ruffles.

  8. Very nice approximation. Unfortunately (or fortunately), "check your oil" is a subjective and context-laden concept which results in stratification of quality of output. Unless you are explicit, you are as they say "kicking the can down the road".

"...theory alone has never impressed me.." It should seeing as theory is a collection of axioms or procedures that have been proven to a sufficient degree. The desired outcome is a function of systematic and methodical procedures (breeding, analysis and conditioning): When you win, you codify and validate a theory or collection of theories. Theories produce explanatory and predictive statements which means that they produce the "Truth" and is open to invalidation.

Again, very solid approximation. I especially like #9.

Bounty, this is why one selects (uses selectivity) AFTER genes and traits thereof have expressed themselves in a grown dog. Part of steering is to avoid certain things as well as heading toward better things. If I'm correct, I believe that's what Rock n Rye was also pointing out.

TDK, you are still limited to the genes you have access to. IE, roads. If you only have poodles its going to be a long journey before you can produce bulldogs no matter how good you are at steering. Not sure if i can be clearer than that.

I don't think we're saying opposites, Bounty. There's no denying you can't expect good dogs from inferior breeding dogs. I mean that as a norm, when breeding reputable dogs one moves forward if he or she is wise with the best of those givens as they show. Selectivity. Surely not saying one can steer shit in order to make it filet mignon. LOL

Fair enough, it just sounded like you could steer the genes into any direction you want. And as you would know, just because
you breed two quality dogs together doesn't mean you will get offspring as good or better than the parents. That's up to the genes and lady luck.

  14. Was curious if I breed a fawn/white (black nose)with Irish or almost piebald white Markings with a red nose bitch with same white markings, she's from consistant reds and the stud is from a fawn stud, brindle bitch with blues in the grandsires...what do you think the pups may be colored like?(for fun)

Not sure but I am sure that the oil was not checked and overlooking rules 1 thru 10 might be better suited for a car show and not a race, WRONG SITE...

I'm still trying to find the dipstick. Can someone explain to me or show in a diagram where i can find the dipstick?

Apparently, if you really want to check the oil, you've got to be prepared to get your hands dirty, so the dipstick must be found upon YOU.
