A bloodthirsty pit bull savagely mauled a young woman in a Harlem crackhouse after breaking out of a filthy, barricaded room, police and neighbors said yesterday.

The hell hound pounced on 29-year-old Taryn Carr Saturday night, ripping away chunks of her flesh during a vicious, prolonged attack that ended only after cops shot the dog four times, witnesses said.

As the victim lay in critical condition last night, neighbors said the dog - named White Boy - had been biting people for months.

Two cops, alerted by a 911 call, arrived at 10:45p.m. Saturday to find the white pit bull tearing viciously at Carr in the hallway outside the first-floor drug den on W. 134th St., police sources said.

A sergeant shot White Boy from only a few feet away, but the bullet barely fazed the crazed animal, a police source said. The sergeant's partner then squeezed off two more shots, but the 50-pound canine continued its sickening assault on the woman.

A fourth shot from the sergeant's gun finally stopped the bloody onslaught, killing White Boy, the source said.

Carr lay covered in blood with bite wounds to her arms, legs, stomach, back and breasts. She was rushed to Harlem Hospital in critical condition.

"It was the most horrific thing I have ever seen in my life," her boyfriend said after visiting her in intensive care. "I just broke down in tears," said the boyfriend, 40, who didn't want his name used. "The whole [bed] sheet was filled with blood. When I saw that, I just dropped to my knees."

"There were just holes," he said, his voice trailing off as he described her wounds. "She's a beautiful girl. She has a beautiful body. Not anymore."

Carr's boyfriend said she went to the building to visit a friend, not to buy drugs.

Neighbors said a drug dealer known only as Brown shared the first-floor apartment in the dilapidated brownstone with White Boy. Brown slept in the living room, and the dog had the bedroom for himself.

A metal gate and box spring propped against the door apparently were supposed to keep the dog inside. When Carr was attacked, neighbor Rakenya Livingston said she heard Brown yelling.

"I heard Brown hitting the dog," she said. "Then Brown jumped out the window."

Within the past year, White Boy had attacked at least four people and also devoured the runt of another dog's litter, neighbors said.

The dog bit Livingston's rear end last summer as she walked up the building's stairs. "I still got a permanent mark," she said, showing it to a reporter. "The dog attacks anybody and everybody. I told the cops after he bit me, 'You've got to kill that dog.'"

John Atkins, a 50-year-old electrician, said White Boy bit him last month when he stopped by the building to pick up keys.

"I had to pull him to the door and bang his head in the door until he let loose," said Atkins, whose left arm and left leg are still bandaged from the attack.

Veronda Irby, who lives across the street, had no doubts that the cops had to kill White Boy.

"He was no joke," said Irby, whose dogs Freddy and Jason have the same mother as White Boy. "That dog is vicious."
