  1. I was just wondering how you test for gameness in a dog? I saw in another thread that alot of breaders look for gameness, well how do you test for something that is a character of a dog?

Gameness isn't a "character" per say in the dog, gameness is what lays in a dogs heart, and there is only one TRUE test of a dogs gameness and that method is illegal and not condoned by myself or anyone on this board...BB

  5. I see. and I agree 100% with that. I am not for fighting anything - abuse is abuse ! the reason why I ask is that another forum on pits they were discussing how to test for game in the dog and someone asked can you test for game by not fighting it. the person responded by stating "no". the whole thread was rediculous. Thanks for your replies.

There is only one true test of a dogs gameness, and that is in a "fight", but like I said, us and this site do not condone that. But I do have a question, if you are so anti dog fight...why choose this breed?? The reason I ask is because no matter what your stance on dog fighting, that is the HISTORY of this breed...

Like has been said before, there is only one way to test for gameness. You say, your "not for fighting anything - abuse is abuse!", but I ask what do you really know about that whole subject? Many people just simply give the subject a wide berth, and don't take the time to actually research it. I took the time to thoroughly research the subject, but I didn't just read a bunch of media/humaniac/Peta biased stuff. Instead I sought out books written by ol' time doggers, also. I'm simply curious, and being the Devils Advocate. Don't mean to come off confrontational, just very protective of my breed. The American Game Dog. You are absolutely right, there are great injustices to the breed, but they may not be what you think them to be. They are much more likely to perpetrated by misinformed do-gooders. More harm has been done in the name of being humane in the last couple decades, than was done in centuries of selectively "game testing" pit stock. I am not advocating dog fighting, just the use of discretion, when deciding what is truth and what is not. Thank-You

The only thing you can tell with a dog on the end of your leash is agressiveness/prey drive, which has absolutely nothing to do with "gameness". A good bloodline may tell you how your dog "could" be, but it means little, as there are curs in all lines and good dogs in lines you wouldn't expect them in.

    Folks....before something is condemed....study it.

Very well put. [IMG] Most people watch shows like animal cops to get their 'understanding ' of the ABPT. There are not many that actually go out and do research to better understand the histroy of this breed and with out that how can you understand what these dogs are today.

Gameness, By Very Definition, And In My Line Of Thought Not Around Until The Apbt Hit The Earth's Surface.....is An Unyielding Spirit Ready At All Times And Willing At All Cost. It Is Also A Recessive Trait Carried In The Genetic Make-up Of Our Animals, Today Gameness In Antiquated To A Degree That Seeing Is The Only Believing.
The Part About The Leash Thing, No.... Matter......how Hard A Dog Pulls, Growls, Etc.etc. The Only Thing A Dog Does On A Leash Is Impress The Master. Many A Good Pit Dogs, And Producers Of Pit Dogs Were The Type Of Animal That Would Only Fight When Called On To. Generally This Type Of Dog Could Run Lose While Caring For The Yard, But In The Box The Whole Story Changes. Character Of A Dog Has Nothing, Nor Will It Ever Have Anything To Do With Gameness.
And In My Oppinion The One Asking The Questions About This Subject And Subjects Relative, Should Do So In The Privacy Of Their Own Mentors Circle (if They Have A Mentor)..... Not On The Net. If One Should Ask Questions Of This Nature, We (elders) Should Submit To The Beginners, One Thing And One Thing Only, Ask Your Mentor, Or Get A Mentor.

I somewhat disagree with what has been said to a point, I don 't believe gameness is a "gene"...or else it would be easier to breed with more consistent results. Gameness is what lives in the heart......

Wouldn't an animals genes control how it would act though. Thats like when we breed horses and stuff. We try to go with the horses with the best genes. Physically and mentally. I think that game has a lot to do with genes when you look at it like that. I don't know. I'm just joining the debate. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  18. I will definitely tell you why I have asked the nefarious question to begin with. I do not believe in fighting dogs, I do not believe in abuse to any thing, person or animal. Why did I choose this breed? I did not choose this breed, I chose the dog and the dog chose me. I adopted her from an animal shelter that stated she was abused by a drunk a-wipe that use to kick her around. The shelter and My Oakley chose me to be the owner; I did not have a clue as to what a pit was about. but from my background and so fourth they decided I would be the best Mommy for her. They were very pertective of her and I can see why. She is a sweety. I do not advocate any breed I love them all. I happen to be the Mother of a Pit Bull and am trying to get the most education I can from the people that would know so I can dispell any misgivings of the breed with thorough education. THanks for your posts.

i'm not saying genes dont have a part in it but you could take two great game dogs and breed them.that does not mean that every dog in that litter is going to be great like the parents were. it comes down to which dog has the heart to make them what the parents were. genes might give some of the parents abilities and other traits but its the heart that seperates the great from the good. jmo
