A lot of good points made here. Like RLK said you have to find out what the dog likes to do. I have found that hand walking and road work with a bike works for my dog, and I do agree you must put in the same amout of miles and time that your dog does. Getting a dog in top shape is hard work and a lot of trial and error.

I ride my bike for a mill-type workout, I hand walk sometimes, and they love the springpole and frisbee. In the summer they swim, that's an AWESOME workout for them and fun too.

Fetch, hand walk/jog, frisbee, springpole, they play chase with eachother... and our newfound enjoyment - teasing with the laser pointer at night.

  7. i play tug o war everyday at night wid my dog, go take him on alternating short sprints/long runs 3-4 times a week..45/60 mins hand walkin every day..he seem to enjoy it but as lots of you say, they need a mixture of exercises and change to keep them interested..

Long handwalks, run biside the bike, Tug o war, digging for everything that lives in the ground, playing with the ball or what they like. But the most important is that the dogs like the activity. I start working them for real when they dogs are about 20 months old.

  9. Best workout is night hunting...

Hehehe, I found that out with my shepherds. And never rollerblade with two dogs :)
I chase my dog around the house a lot. Jumping over the couch, scooting across the bed, chasing the cats. And running behind her as fast as I can after a squirrel :)
We don't have a bckyard and with the breed ban I can't take her offleash anywhere. Tug o war, hand walking, rollerblading, biking, pulling. When the wheather is better I'll see if she likes swimming.
    She likes anything active.

  11. it also depends on the look you want for your dog different exercises bring out muscles more than others its finding the right exercises and mainly the most important like said before spending time with the dog brings alot of confidence.
handwalking will bring strength and broadness and some endurance
free running is the best of both worlds strength and endurance
weight pulling will bring muscle but will take the dogs legs away same as treadmill and them jogging beside you on a bike. not saying its bad but watch the time spent

  12. Personally, I drag-weight my dogs on a drag-weight sled. They usually drag about 60-90 lbs. If the weight is too heavy, the dog might pull a muscle.

  14. We go for a walk at least every morning and once in a while bike ride though not often but I think he appreciates it. It's nice to mold a connection between you and your dog.

Hand walking 2 miles up and down hills 5 days a week. Go to a park once a week at times when nobody is there so he can free run and chase my kids. Play fetch there too although he always wants me to chase him when he gets the ball. Going through the process of buying a house with a nice big fenced in yard where he will get alot more time to free run and be on a chain. Also gonna buy a flirt pole and do some workouts with it. Change it up some.

I don't actually ''condition'' my dogs as they aren't competing in any venue, but we do ''work'' for fun. lol What we do definitley depends on what the dog likes.

Scarling mainly likes to treadmill and flirt pole.

Deeohgee, it's the boomer ball and treadmill.

CoCo will play fetch until she drops and treadmills.

Deeohgee and CoCo do like the flirt pole, but OMG.... they are DANGEROUS to flirt pole with. They are so insanely focused on the lure, they will run you right over in an attempt to shorten the distance and get to the lure, so I only do it with them when I'm feeling dexterous and brave! lol

Salem is just a pup so we are just gradually introducing her to everything. She really likes tug and has given the spring pole a go. Working on building her confidence around the mill so we can getting her running that eventually.

Tank and Arez are 12 now so ''retired'' from any hard play. Their favorite was definitely spring pole. The rest will go at it now and again but I don't find they like our present set up as much as just a rope in a tree. We don't have a tree in our yard so my landlord built us a set up, but it does get used off and on still.

Can't forget the crazy Patterdale. She actually does all the ''stuff''.... that is when SHE feels like it. lol She'll treadmill, flirt pole, fetch, spring pole, run in circles like she's insane. lol

Of course they all get hand walked usually a three mile walk and then home to run the mill afterwards.

We have a massive fenced in yard so they get ''yard time'' just to run around like idiots and do whatever they want.

We also have a swim tank that we started on last summer. I can't wait to pull it out again! We only had a chance to try CoCo in it last season and she got the idea right off the bat! lol

Nobody uses a swim tank? The swim tank and carpet mill are great for those high driving Eli dogs, great tools to build up strength and wind in them dogs that go all out til they fall out..
