How do I train my dog to ignore other dogs on walks?

Discussion in 'Training & Behavior' started by JAY_TEE_PEE, Feb 18, 2014.

  1. The only problem I have with my dog is that she gets too excited when he sees other dogs. If I can solve this problem, she will be perfect.

Whenever we go on walks or Petsmart, and she sees other dogs right? So then she starts to pull on his leash desperately trying to get to the dog although she doesn't wine or even bark. Other dog owners does not seem to want my dog near theirs because they see an aggressive pitbull pulling on their leash. My dog is not aggressive, she just gets too excited. Also when he meets dogs smaller than she is, she will walk up to them and be very clam. She will sniff them and that's it. I will present to her the most deliciously smelling treats to make her look at me but he pays no attention.

How do I effectively train her to sit/stand quietly when other dogs are present or quietly just walk past dogs? Today on a walk, there is a neighbor that keeps their dog in the garage and leaves it cracked, so the dog will bark if anyone or anything passing by. when I walked my dog by, she started pulling and would not walk on, so what I did was kept walking by and when ever she started pulling I would call her name and make her sit, which she would do. I then got down to her level and start talking to her and petting her then start walking again, and when she got up she walk walk calmly for a few seconds then go back to pulling. She was actually showing progress with this and getting better at ignoring the dog. But then the owner came out and closed the garage so I had to leave.

Just today I was walking her and a man came out his house with his two dogs running around (i think they were shih tzu/yorkie mix or something small), and they ran up to my dog barking, m dog just looked at them and sniffed them, so I know she wouldnt harm a fly, but still after she was very excited and pulling on the leash.

Also I have no way to get her with an other dog to train, which is the biggest problem for me getting her over this problem and can not do training class.

if she is an apbt, be careful. How old is the dog??
all dogs are different. may be asking for trouble if she runs up on a dog that dont like her.

Bingo. What you are doing is a accident waiting to happen should never let a strange dog come up to, could go bad in a blink of a eye and you'll be in a shit storm because you own a bulldog. Yis Ole Man

My opinion is you have alot of learning to do about this breed. After you do that, you'll answer your own question.

  5. I would like to suggest you that you should concern trainer and training school. I think they suggest you better "How do you train your dog". It it natural if your dog do such type of activity.

^^^^ No trainer or training school is going to quit making a dog do what his instincts tell him to do. You need to learn about this breed as well.

I would like to suggest,,that you+your..she/he-dog...go stick your heads in the oven...and put on full....????...or just blind-fold your dog when walking................................w.t.f.....

  8. You can work with her to ignore other dogs while she is on a leash to an extent depending on your dog BUT you cant train her to get along with other dogs.
If you want her to ignore dogs while she is on leash find something she really likes like tug or food. Start out as far as you can away from the other dog almost so she doesnt even see her. as soon as she focuses on you reward her by playing tug or feeding her. work closer as she is more focused. distance in the beginning is your friend. if she reacts when you start moving closer move back to where she was focused on you. it takes awhile to achieve this and is best when done as a puppy so they are conditioned to look at you when they see another dog and they get rewarded. This does not work with all dogs some are just too hot when they get around other dogs and cant focus on you.
I have done this with my male when he was a pup and was/is fine if dog was far enough away but I cant be close to them as he just cant focus on me as he wants to get to another dog.
As I said it is not a foolproof method but should let you get through a walk hopefully. Again this does not work for all dogs AND does not mean even if you get her to ignore another dog while she is on leash that she wont fight with one if a dog runs up on her.

I only have one or two dogs at a time, so I haven't had a ton of dogs to go by, but my first three were pretty mellow about SEEING other dogs. I learned really quick that I better not let my male do anything more than see them, though. This girl I have now is insane when it comes to other dogs. I took her to a puppy obedience when she was 4 months old, but quit when it became obvious that she didn't give a rat's behind about the treats, hotdogs, or even canned dog food that was supposed to be her reward. All she wanted was the other puppies. Now I try to walk her either really early or late enough so that there probably won't be other people walking their dogs, because she goes absolutely crazy when she sees another dog. I'm talking about full on screaming, trying as hard as possible to get free, and if the other dog gets close enough she's come close to biting me for holding her back. I think it's hysterically funny (probably because she's stopped short of actually biting me), but the other dog owners usually don't, so I do what I can to avoid them. She's a pretty extreme case, but not too out of the ordinary for these dogs.

You can TRY to change the dog, but it might not work. You might just have to change your routine. Walk at odd hours, or take your walks out in the woods or someplace remote, or just let her pull when she sees another dog.

Most of all: LISTEN TO WHAT HAS BEEN SAID SO FAR. Letting your dog smell a toy size dog is a BAD idea. One of those little things shows teeth and your dog might have it in her mouth shaking it like a toy before you even know what happened. Please do not let that happen.

I suggest you get a Walker Hound, and worry about how to keep it from treeing. Much safer screw up than to get a bulldog and want it to do everything but what it's heritage yields it. And make sure you keep putting the dog in that same dangerous situation BEFORE you seek a trainer or put the dog with someone else and get a breed which isn't prone to such actions.

So many folks with these dogs bitch and complain constantly that people with a lack of understanding of the breed such as yourself get these dogs, and that much of our troubles are promulgated because of it. While they express this sentiment, they also enable you and others to continue with them and learn as you go at God knows what expense along the way.

I'm not going to enable you. I'm going to suggest that you rethink having one of this breed until you spend a couple of years to learn and be trained by experienced hands yourself. THEN possibly acquire a bulldog. They are often merely a loaded gun in the hands of a child in these situations.

As always, well said TDK! Love your wording all the time! Wish I could express myself as proper as you do. Always hit the point very strong as well.

Why are you taking your dog to pet smart? I could see this making headlines in the near future, pitbull attacks 3 dogs at pet smart and owner forgets breaking stick at home.
