Not sure if this has been posted but I searched and couldn't find it.
I was wondering how everybody got into game dogs? Just curious on who or how you guys got interested. For me, I always wanted a pitbull when I was a kid but looking back what I though was a pitbull was really an Ambully. When I moved to Guam I met a guy with 2 APBT's and I was looking at getting a dog anyway so I started doing research on the APBT and interacting with his dogs. Thats when I learned the difference between a APBT and Ambully. After reading all the history on the TRUE APBT I started seeking out an APBT and not an Ambully. The history behind the real APBT's interested me the most and to me this is what stands this breed out among all other breeds.

i have always had them since i was a kid. they are the best looking, most loyal and most athletic dogs when u combine speed, strength, agility and so on. i just thought they were the best dog. I always was interested in the history and had a basic knowledge of the difference between bullies, amstaffs, staffs and apbt. i didnt however know anythign about the different bloodlines. I knew there was gators bc my bro rasies them in texas and i had heard of a few others but didnt have any real knowledge about it. Thats really what im pickin up on now. and between reading and you all im learning pretty quickly.

Back in 93 i was 12, there was some low income apartments with a park and tennis courts in the back covered with ivy and acres of field all behind it, even the police didnt like goin back there. Weekly basis you had the white boys from the college bringin in their dogs that they paid good money for, the asains always had some small gamey dogs, the blacks brung in the big headed hard mouth dogs and the mexicans had all kinds of currs. I dont remember big money betting and usually nothing going over 30 min. It all lasted almost 5 yrs they called it the fairgrounds. Thats where i found my first pup. She was stolen 4 months later.

Id like to add niether me or my dogs participated whatsoever all i have is memories

93' or 94' i was sitting in detention and the teacher a my neighbor let me and 3 of my friends read a sdj, from that point i was hooked. cleaned sh!t and walked dogs everyday just to learn a lil bit. And even after taking care of his dogs i still had to find my own... But the foundation of knowledge i gained from the old timer is worth more than some people's whole yard! Didn't get my first dog til 98'

When I met my wife she had one, and the three of us were pretty-much inseparable after that. It just made sense to always have one.

grew up around dogs dad had GSDs from the time he got home from vietnam. Had LOTS of types down on the farm. Always loved dogs but im not gonna lie, i got my first APBT at 24 cause i thought it was a macho dog. I was green, green, green. But ive been doing my homework ever since. The search function on here has been a wealth of knowledge since joining.
    Thank you Marty and staff.

My dad was born in 1950, they were the dog to have back then. He always wanted one, then in 1981 he finally had a nice house built in the country and the movie "Death Hunt" came out and he couldn't fight the urge to have one anymore so we got our first. Back then no one knew much about him so owning him was very nice, by and large anyways.

*Death Hunt is a Chalres Bronson/Lee Marvin movie where a pit bull jacks up a husky in the beginning during the gold rush era.

  12. A friend of my older brother had a pit bull and he would bring it over and tie it to a tree in front. I would keep it company feeding it bologna and hot dogs. I loved how powerful he was yet very friendly with people. Everyone took turns walking him around the block, and he would literally be dragging everyone. Loved them every since.

  13. Ive had bulldogs since i was a kid, some family members had irish jerrys dogs and a few other lines back then heck thats been over 50 years ago ive had them ever since

After my Boxer passed at age 12 (I was 25), I felt a gap and knew I needed to get another dog but I was reluctant because I didn't feel my living arrangements were adequate. So I started looking, my wife insisted that our breed be a Pitbull. She had grown up with them and her reasoning was nothing to do with the temperament or behavior, it was because of their coat lol.
    <O:p
So we were shopping the pounds, didn't really find anything that sparked interest, I wasn't sold on an APBT just yet but she kept insisting. She found a BYB add in our local paper (realize we were completely ignorant at the time) and convinced me to take a look.

<O:p</O:pBuster was the only male left; there were 2 or 3 females probably twice his size. The parents and previous litters were there, they looked like the size of dog I wanted. I said I would think about it and we left. We didn't get 1/2 home and she made me turn around and we took Buster home. In retrospect, I consider this a rescue...

<O:p</O:pThe story after that is a long one, and it was quite the emotional rollercoaster and a quest for knowledge but we'll save that for another thread.

I have always had a soft spot for a bulldog while I grew up. My sister actually got the first pitbull when I was like 10yrs old I remember him well! His name was Dusty and was a true bulldog there was no strays that came around nor stayed while we owned him. When he was gone I always wanted another one but Mom always said no until I could afford to feed them. When I turned 16 and got a steady job I got the first one of my own she wasnt papered but was pure bulldog and catchdog deluxe on cattle. Then I happened to look in the paper one day and seen a reg male that was at the pound. I went to check him out and what a specimen he was! Muscled up jug headed buckskin bullyson bred dog! He was a beast (meaning strong as an ox) and the gamest thing I had ever seen (with scars to prove it). Bully would lay with cats and puppies though and play with my nieces and nephews like he was a puppy himself. Had two guys track him down and want to buy him but I refused as I considered him a rescue and he was a real buddy type dog. There is a really long story that goes with that dog but ill save it for later. He was the one that showed me the courage and heart that the breed has and got me hooked from then on!! After Bully was gone I went a long time with out another bulldog.

same here. started walking dogs for my best friends dad when we were like 10-11. I was hooked from that point. I got my first pup when i was like 14 or 15, kept him til i left for the service. After getting home and some years later with a house of my own, I bought me another one.
I once walked a dog called JR, a son of redboy. I also walked a dog off of Miss Pool Hall Red. That seems like a hudred years ago. S.
