Housebreaking Issue

Discussion in 'Training & Behavior' started by LittleLizard, Mar 11, 2011.

  1. Well, he's already housebroken, so the hard part is over. We actually adopted the little fella from the shelter and he was already housebroken when he came to us. He's about four months old, and so he's at an age where my past dogs were both able to sleep through the night without going outside.

The only problem is, Opie never fails to wake me up in the middle of the night needing to go outside. I don't feed him or give him water after seven o'clock. I take him out a few times before we go to bed around eleven. We wake up around seven, and he usually goes to sleep when we do. The problem is that he always has to relieve himself again once, maybe twice a night.

He goes to the door and whines and clearly lets me know when he has to go out and I certainly don't want to ignore him. I don't want a mess in the house and I certainly don't want him to think that alerting us isn't going to do any good. He clearly knows relieving himself in the house is not a good thing, because his "I have to go out whine" is often quite desperate when neither of us are in the living room. I'm just wondering if I can change his relief time a little. Get him on a better schedule, if you will.

    Any ideas?

at that age id be happy hes letting ya know hes gotta go;)

  3. Oh, I certainly am. He's extremely good at making sure we know when he has to go out. Should I just wait until he's older to expect him to make it through the night?

A 4 month old pup should be able to hold it for about 5 hrs so it sounds like he is a normal pup. He will hold it longer as he matures. You could try cutting his last water of the night back to 6-6:30 pm.

Are you sure that pup is drinking enough?

  9. Thanks everyone. :) I'll cut his water back some more. His last walk of the day is usually around five or so and he's usually not too active for the rest of the day, so cutting it back a little wont bother him.

I'm extremely glad that he knows how to tell us when he wants out. He really is a well-behaved dog. Came to us knowing sit and down. He's stubborn as heck, but he's intelligent. I think I've got a good one on my hands. =)

Oh, and here's a picture of the little guy for anyone who's interested.

Another raw feeder here. Little dried up poops are normal. My oldest dog is 12, she's been on raw since she was 5. She's been happily crapping tight, dry, small poops for years.
My pup is 4 months, she's been sleeping through the night for quite a while. Of course, the spoiled little wretch sleeps in bed. Our pups look similar, she had those ears last month, but they've changed.[IMG]

Yes, he is fine. He gets almost all his water from raw meat and does not need to drink nearly as much as a kibble fed dog.

    Yep..same here. lol.
During the day he can pee several times every hour but at night he will hold it for 8 hrs.

I suggest that you sit up a couple nights and observe your pup
On these nights observe his actions don't stop him from soiling his pen just record how many times and the time your pup soils clean up at same time

Next step is to set an alarm for the times recorded wake up and take the pup out
he will get better at holding it but can't through the night yet

I don't want to hijack this thread, but just FYI...Although raw fed dogs shitting little rocks may be common, it doesn't necessarily mean it is best.
I also feed raw and have for years, I know that raw fed dogs generally don't drink as much water as kibble fed dogs,...I also know that many raw fed dogs do not drink as much water as they should. Look for balance in what your dog puts out. Dark urine and " hard, crumbly, dusty "little rocks" means the dog probably isn't getting enough water or enough fat. You don't want slimy soup, and you don't want rocks either. Tight, darkish, low-odor semi-moist/slightly dry stools are what you are shooting for,...not little rocks. Stools should dry up and crumble in a day, not on the way out of the dog. If you are getting rocks, add a 1/2 to 1 cup of water to you dog's meal-depending on the size and age of the dog, the weather, exercise, etc. Start with a half cup poured over the food, or even measure out the amount and add a capful of your supplemental oil to the water in the dog's bowl. Check on the difference in the stools and adjust up or down accordingly. Just because they drink less doesn't mean they shouldn't drink. A whole lot of raw folks take water requirements for granted and never get the full benefits of raw feeding because they basically allow their dogs to keep themselves perpetually dehydrated.

I didnt want to hijack this thread either. I'm fully aware you feed raw, and I have also for 7 years, so I know what to look for. I said rocks in a joking way, as a figure of speech meaning they are solid, hard turds. But they still have moisture to them. I know that crumbling dusty poop coming out of a dog is too much bone, and not enough water. I never said the dog does not drink. If anyone is perpetually dehydrating their dogs its the people who feed kibble.

lol..thats what I thought you meant. ;) But what I was trying to say was if you feed raw the stool is harder and less chance of it turning to soup. Also they poop less because they are digesting completely all the nutrients in the food. Where as with kibbble a lot of it is wasted and comes out the other end. As hard as a kibble fed dogs stool appears, its still going to break down into a pasty mess that gets everywhere.

    Who gives a shit? Lols

Is this thread about house breaking

Or who's dog can shit the hardest turd

  20. Get a crate and have him sleep in that, he won't want to pee where he is sleeping. Also he is younger you may need to get up once in the night and let him out real quick to pee, you gotta be patient and remember he is a immature animal.
