Hog Dog Rodeos Banned In Mississppi!

Mississppi House OK's hog dog ban!

The Mississippi House voted 110-11 Tuesday to ban hog-dog rodeos, but only after a raucous debate that touched on drinking, hunting, illegal gambling and guys named "Bubba."

Louisiana in 2004 outlawed hog-dog rodeos - events where pit bulls or other dogs are put into pens with wild hogs that are left mostly defenseless after their tusks have been sawed off.

The events usually take place on isolated, rural property, and onlookers wager on how long it will take the dogs to pin down the hogs.

"It is a blood sport," said Rep. May Whittington, D-Schlater. "It's one animal attacking another for commercial gain, and I find that disgusting."

Mississippi law makes dogfighting a felony and cockfighting a misdemeanor, but it doesn't address hog-dog fighting. A proposed ban on hog-dog rodeos died in the Legislature last year.

Rep. Eric Robinson, R-Quitman, said Rep. Robert Vince, D-Sandy Hook, had asked him to support a ban on hog-dog rodeos. Vince was absent Tuesday, but he had told Robinson that the fights are taking place in Walthall County, just over the Louisiana border.

"They have moved from Louisiana into his county," Robinson said. "They're up there congregating drinking whiskey and beer..."

    "Boo!" several House members shouted.

    "... gambling ...," Robinson said.

    "Boo!"

"... doing all sorts of mischief," Robinson said. "And he don't like it at all."

Rep. Deryk Parker, D-Lucedale, argued against a ban on hog-dog rodeos, saying that if a bunch of guys get together to train their puppies to chase hogs for hunting, their actions could be misinterpreted.

"Bubba and his buddies could be in a world of trouble on a Saturday morning, training their puppies," Parker said.

Parker also criticized the Humane Society, which has pushed to ban hog-dog fights. He said the group wants to outlaw hunting.

"This is a group, if you just go their Web site, if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile," Parker said.

Debra Boswell, director of the Mississippi Animal Rescue League, said in an interview later that neither her group nor the Humane Society of the United States is trying to ban hunting. But she said both groups support a ban on hog-dog fights, which they see as cruel to animals.

Parker said district attorneys could use existing animal-cruelty laws to crack down on fight organizers. Or, he said, prosecutors could bring tax evasion charges if organizers charge admission without paying taxes.

The bill also would set penalties for cruelty to cats.

The measure back moves back to the Senate, which had passed a version without provisions to protect cats. The Senate could either accept the House change or seek final negotiations before sending anything to the governor.

The bill is Senate Bill 2210.

Dont matter if this aint your bag, these ppl come in sheeps clothing. They will lie, cheat, steal, to make their point and god help ya if you happen to be on the end of these crazy F**** trying to set an example.

You would think the ppl of Mississippi would litterly laughed this group out of the state....They still have communities that are suffering from the devastating hurricanes. Yet they are worried about Hog Dog Rodeo...it's "cruel" ....get the fuck out of here with your feel good bullshit. Put those monies that have been donated to real work....what a bunch of chumps!!!

Yep. That's what Rep. Parker said. Give them an inch & they'll take a mile. They've been trying to pass this since 2004 & it was shot down last year, but they pushed the issue & it is now due to take effect July 2006. Luckily the fine is small - $1000 fine or 6 mos in jail.

It was the riff-raff who ruined it for everyone though. There are some folks who put on classy rodeos, but some were real thuggy events in which drugs & guns were present & ppl used the rodeo to evaluate dogs & set up dogfights.

It's come down to all or nothin, Why should any of us have to compromise to save one issue from the other.....who cares if it's not your bag. Would you like me to sell you down the river cause it realy didn't matter to me at the time and it wouldn't be somthin I would take interest in......NO, you wouldn't like it. However many groups have stepped back an let have the APBT....all in hopes to save what they were doing.

Guess what folks....they are gunnin for us all. It is all or nothing, you cant be for one thing and not the other. Stop em where they stand, I think most of this should be turned around and who says these folks are above the law....only if we let them be.

1000$ fine, that will go towards funding more lobbiest to help pass laws in that state and on the federal level.

These ppl in the comunity should have never of let this pass.

If anything they should have regulated it.

Simms, you are absolutely right. These SOB's do come under guise of something else and the HSUS is against hunting..they're just not open about it...yet. They've a fewmore battles to win before tackling that one. Band together and fight..fight..fight is what needs to be done by all involved with any aspect of bulldogs. And never take these humaniacs at face value...they have too many faces.

I know *gasp* anything but whiskey. How could something like the hunt for Osama and other terrorists, a foreign war and helping with the after effects of Katrina and Rita be of importance when we've got hog-dogging and whiskey drinking going on? I mean hold the presses...

What about hog-catch pens for training young dogs, illegal also?

Well of course, we all know pot is dangerous. Gotta eradicate every bit of it they find...it's all priorities.

Actually priorities IS what's wrong with this country. More concerned with animal rights than human rights. We have homeless, unemployed and dying citizens. But instead our govt. agencies concentrate great effort on lesser concerns such as pot use, hog dogging and other animal related issues. Hmmm.

Easier to catch old dogmen and kill their dogs...take them to jail than it is to actually do some real police work and arrest criminals-rapists, and women-beating crackheads. Besides, they dont get the same fame for arresting a rapist as they do for "busting underground fighting rings!".

This bill passed the House vote, and has YET too pass in the Senate.
This has NOT Passed, no matter what some want you too believe.
It can still die on the floor of the Senate, or in Committee.

The best thing to do, is find the names, #'s and email addresses of Senetors on the Judicuary Committee and let them here from you, and get this shit stopped.

I can't stand to see people post that a law has passed when in fact it hasn't.
It makes people stop fighting to stop it.

Get informed and quit posting inacurate information, and EVERYONE contact the senetors of MS and let them know how you feel about this bill.

You need to learn the differance between, "approved" and "passed as law"

You are giving up and getting others to give up before its actually law.
I had rather go out fighting til the very end, then cur out cause it passed one house.

The EXACT same thing happened in AL last year and we got it KILLED in Commity, when it went to the Senate.

Quit if you like but I'll keep fighting, for OUR rights.

The measure, approved in a 111-11 House vote, was held for reconsideration. Once passed, it will return to the Senate to consider changes. Representatives added a provision to repeal the law in 2008.
