Was watching my 4 month old pups wrestle the other day, all about the same weight give or take a couple ounces. I noticed the shortest pup would get pushed down easily by other pups jumping on his shoulders. Poor guy has slobber all over his neck most of the time. One thing for sure though, he is RARELY on his back and he gets a kick out of flipping his siblings over.

Given 2 dogs of the same weight, do you prefer the taller specimen or shorter but wider one?

What do you feel is the greater advantage a lower center of gravity or leverage?

All thoughts, experiences and comments welcome!

    shoter/wider dog
the center of gravity is an advantage over the leverage ( all subject to style of course)
years ago i had a shorter/wider dog go under a hog's brisket and with a great push apwards, toppled the hog over on its back and the dog struck the throat/shoulder and kept it pinned.
but for working cattle i like a little taller/rangier dog

I went with leverage because I'm not a fan of the lower slung wide dogs. rather have a more leggy type that knew how to use its length.

ive learned over the years with catch dogs that the taller dogs can usually move around a lot better and protect there selves more efficiently than a shorter dog

I would go with the leverage... I have herd from several "Old Timers" that they can really move. One of them says they can "Dance"... lol

I like them tall and long, the short have power but they have to do twice as much work. Style will give the advantage to either side though, if i had to choose between two head dogs, 1 short and 1 tall. I'll take the tall one all day long. JMO

  10. Gotta love those rangy ones. They do make it look like they they're dancing when you see them on a hog hunt, or so I've been told.

  12. Taller dogs. The short dogs tend to get tired first. gr ch buck had great stamina and great style and he was a tall dog.

Its closer than i thought. Roughly 2:1 in favor of height.

Anyone who voted for Low Center of Gravity care to give us their view on why they like the shorter dogs?
