a general quick question on greyhounds...

on purebred greyhounds, does the breed suffer from the performance vs show thing like it hapens with pitbull and sbts? or is it still bred for performance for the most part?

regarding the crossing and comments on looks, i suppose that this shouldnt be an issue since we are talking working dogs. and it is ironic that ppl in a gamedog related forum say they dont like something just because of looks.

personaly i'm ok with the crossing as long as they dont use the word pibull for their outcome.

no mate most greyhounds will be track bred or coursing bred and they are one of the healthiest breeds alive today if ever a dog gets recreated or is very rare alot will use greyhound as the blood as they are that healthy

  7. he's not on bout apbt x sight hound he's talkin bout apbt x grey hound so not lurcher but bullgrey

  8. my bad what i was ment to say is the greyhound apbt mix is more commonly known as bullgrey well in aus anyways ive never heard any 1 in aus call it a lurcher

  9. pig dogs dont need to look pretty they ment to hunt good.
plus you add the apbt wind, gameness and stamina with the greyhound speed and you've got 1 hell of a pig dog
    IMO

behind a real bulldog not a staff of any kind they are the next best thing! powerful, explosive, fast , game as hell been proven manys times, and in some case can be cleaver and you probably have more fun out with one of these then doing any kind of a-frame B.S but then its what ever floats your boat.......

Lurchers (sight hound cross) are commonly used for big game. It is funny how little some people on this forum know about other breeds of dogs. The fittest pit isn't even close to as fast as a greyhound. Greyhound's have great stamina too. They will cover twice the ground a bulldog can cover in half the time.

I read the book the lost dogs, they tested his dogs so many was amstaffs and the rest was crossed with grayhound and wippet...

    1. The DNA tests for breeds are not accurate at all. Michael Vick's dogs did NOT have whippet or greyhound in them. Nor do pitbulls have lab, golden retriever or what ever else in them that those silly tests come up with.
    2. Greyhounds are sprinters. They are the fastest dogs on earth for very short distances-about 1/4 to 1/2 mile max. Stamina = endurance not speed. They do not have anywhere near the stamina that a pitbull does. Pitbulls can run/work continuously for hours at a time. No greyhound can run for an hour straight. Yes they can cover more ground over a short distance, but after the hour mark I'd bet the pitbull is passing them.
    3. If you crossed a greyhound to a pitbull you would likely get a dog who is slower than a greyhound but faster than a pitbull. It would have more stamina than a greyhound but less than a pitbull. It would be gamer than a greyhound and not as game as a pitbull.

well put! bullx dont have great stamina......if the dog dont finish it quick then in most case they dont finish them at all in steps the owner to finsh the job.

I agree with that. Bulldog greyhound mixes are very common where I hunt. I have one myself. He tries to catch like a bulldog, but doesn't have the jaw strength to hold on. He is always the first dog to get to bay though, and I have never seen him give up a chase.

The problem with most bulldogs is they don't range. They may have a ton of drive/endurance, but when hunting they typically stay within eyesight. My lurcher goes out with the bay dogs ranging up to one mile. If they get on a hog my lurcher keeps the hog from breaking bay

baying dogs bark to let you know where they are bullxs dont have the range because they are a sight hound some scent up but thats not what they are used for well not where iam from they are held on the lead and sliped weather in day light or under a lamp and the bullxs i know have more than enough jaw strenght to hold on just not the stamina but that all depends on what you hunt....

Well, I think most Aussie's use their lurchers like that.

I have to do things a little different. I just have one lurcher. He runs with the bay dogs. He is gritty, but can't hold a big hog by the ear for long (too lanky = gets shucked). Most of the places I hunt the pigs get a fair amount of pressure from dogs. A hog that has been chased a few times learns never to get bayed up. They just keep running. That is where the Lurcher comes in. He can catch them and turn them. After trying to run a few times and getting chomped the hog will stop and stand it's ground. Then my bay dogs keep the pig at bay until the bulldogs get there.
