I got out of hand. All im saying is what if the type of dogs you have arent known for gameness. In keep you bring them in healthy and strong so they could get to work rather than lean so they can go the distance. They have had their oil checked and passed with flying colors. In the woods they tend to finish near the hour mark because their opponent can go no longer. OFCOURSE not all these hardmouth dog make it, ones with skill who stay out of trouble do. Now you want to breed em, you arent looking for the gamest stud but one with the most skill who can get the job done quickest. This is wat I would breed for.

BRB...taking my game dog into a wrecker, losing my money, letting my dog get severely damaged/killed because the only thing it could do was lay there and wait for a turn, and going away happy

Ok Ok Ok i have to chime in on this one. Assuming this is all pre '76. First thing is you cant assume that a hardmouthed dog is a cur. Thats not the case at all. Its hard as hell to find someone to let their dog get busted up by your dog in schooling. Whos gonna sit there and let their dog get ripped apart for nothng? only so the other guy can see how far his dog will go? No one. Truth be told its alot harder to find out how deeply game ur hardmouthed dog is due to that fact. You cant fault the dog for crunching hard but as stated earlier, if he makes bad moves and too many turns and hesitates to scratch then you know its not worth messing with at all. No one knows how game chinaman was and will never know but obviously he was worth breeding. I hate for people to use the term deadgame about a dog thats still alive. In case you didnt know it has to be dead to be considered deadgame. Id rather pick up a deep gamedog than to bag up a deadgame dog anyday. Another thing is if you know what you're looking for in your dog, hardmouthed or not, you'll see it in him within minutes not 30, 40 minutes. It doesnt take that long to see what you're looking for. For some it may but for those who have been around for awhile you can tell within 10 minutes what that dog will or will not be doing in 30 to 40 to 50 minutes. Tell me im lying. Im not new to this. I grew to this. But everyone has different beliefs which is why they're are unsucessful lines and sucessful lines of the same blood. Its the breeder not the dogs so much. Gameness is definitely needed first and mouth is a plus because ive seen hardbiting dogs that never got the chance to display there talent because the smart dog kept them off them the whole time. riding the ear. but ive also seen hardmouthed fair gamedogs, by my standards, to go on to become champions. At the end of the day do what you think works for you and leave the rest unto the others. Thats what causes stiff and easy competition. We're all different.

all i was tryin to say is that if you breed for mouth you are likely to lose gameness.

who the hell want a dog thats not game if you want a hard bitting cur get out of apbt and get a presa rotti or a ambull and leave the game dogs for me dont get me wrong i love a dog with a hard mouth but he need to be game cause that what make him a bulldog once you breed for anything else first take the bull out of the name and just call him a dog apbt is the only true dog worthy of being called a bulldog and we need to keep it that way or your just aiding in get making our breed disappear:eek:

Many smart evasive ear biters have been known to work a "mouth" dog the same way a hog dog will work a hog...and the "mouth" dogs have gotten frustrated, gased, and curred out. It is all history. No need to ignore the knowledge that already exists even if one doesn't get into such activities.

how old are your dogs? ch dink must be pretty old by now?

  12. Gameness, gameness and more gameness. That is what set this bread apart.

I agree with what the poster said about seeing a deep game dog make a belly scratch. There is nothing more gut wrenching then seeing that in person.

As far as the second most impressive thing to see in this arena is a truly smart, smart dog. A dog that can keep that hard mouth dog at bay and inflict damage. Those hard mouth chest dogs suddenly lose interest at the hour mark against these type competitors.

a hard mouth has nothing to do with loosening intrest. what your talking about is a rough cur.also there ain't anything impressive about a defensive type dog that sits there & ear sucks. a truly smart dog will hit there spot stay there & finish. a true hard mouth dog will break a dog down no matter what spot it hits. they will force a pick up no matter how game the dog is because a smart handler knows a dead game dog ain't worth shit.

  14. I disagree. I have always been a big fan of the dogs that are defensive to the point of completely frustrating there prey. And, as you do know, there are dogs that are only focused on one part.

I guess it is just a matter of choice.

lakewood then you are a fan of shiteating cur. because good dogs don't hit one spot or get frustrated by ear sucking they adapt. so what does that say for the quality of the comp if they are frustrated by some ear sucking?

  16. Look. You have your opinions on what you look for in a dog. I have mine. Is that ok? I like the ear and head dogs better. Why would you call a dog that goes to the head a shit eaten cur? i guess all the great dogs of yesteryear that did this were all curs as well.

why because that is a sign of it not wanting to be around. & the quality of the opposition comes into play when it allow itself to be ridden like that. so the quality said dog is in question.

  18. So a dog that goes to the face and the head is not quality? Where do you come up with this stuff? I guess a dog that prefers the twig and the berries is a quality animal.

I thought it was considered smart for a dog to be a good ear and nose dog because he could wear down the opponent with his own body weight while staying out of trouble. The other dog is carrying both their weight. Then once the bottom dog is worn out the ear and nose dog is still fresh cause he's been pretty much resting on the head the whole time. Once the other dog is worn out then he can go in and finish.
