Flyod BOUDREAUX & Julius BOURQUE'S CHECK aka Norrod's

There is so much history I don't know where to start.
I guess it is always best to start at the beginning.
I wrote an article many years ago called "Story of an Unknown Dogman".
It is a true story of our relationship with the Boudreaux family in East Texas.

My Great Uncle gave us a female heavy bred in William's Gr. Ch. Copper blood bred by Clarence Yates. Her name was Flossie.
Over the years we became friends with Pat Bodzainowski in Tinley Park IL.
He had a dog sent to him from Maurice Carver, who we had known while living and going to school in Texas City.
The male Pat had was a champion, his name was Paddy Boy. He had a few well known litter mates. One was Ch. Rascal and the other was his sister Lupe.

Paddy Boy was 3/4 Eli/Spook bred dog. I bred Flossie to Paddy Boy in early March of 1975 and the litter was born June 1, 1975. From that litter came one of my favorite dogs ever, Norrod's Smokin Satan 2xw. Pat got part of the litter. Pat had Tarzan 2xw. When ever that dog's name came up, Pat would say in way oooooh what a pit artist.
As every one had read a few years before Pat, Sonny Sykes and Dick Bell had gotten into trouble with the dogs.
Make no bones about it, Pat was a sporting dogman until the day he died.

As I wrote in the article I was impressed with Floyd's breeding program and how he bred his dogs so when I had this litter I became more of a fan of this line of dogs.

I got a phone call from a fellow in Pasadena Texas in the early 80's, outside of Houston, named Gilbert Flores. Gilbert had many well known dogs at the time with Jordan and others. He had Zachariah who he obtain with the help of Bobby Hall's first wife. He also had a 2xw name Scallywag. Later I read about a fellow named Bo Wells being involved with those dogs but when I was, there wasn't anyone with that name around them then.

Gilbert just had a litter off a female name Missy bred back to her sire Billy Boy. He told he had spoke to Floyd and asked him what he felt was the best cross for those dogs and Floyd told him Red Devil bloodlines. Floyd told him he should get a hold of me and see if he could obtain some of the blood. So Gilbert offered me a trade. We worked out a deal and I ended up with Peaches the pick of the litter. J.D. end up with a female, Jimmy at American Kennels got Missy II and the only male named Hoover and Julius got Baby who was later bred to Check.

When I went to my father's house I went up to Gilbert's place and saw his dogs and to pick up my puppy crates he forgot to ship back...

Jimmy was dealing a lot with Gilbert, he later got Missy the mother and Pretty Boy and Bonnie. Later when talking to Floyd I was told there was some kind of falling out with everyone on a deal and I don't know all the details. I know there was a problem on the deal with Bonnie. I know Gilbert was letting go a lot of dogs. He sent Scallywag to Jimmy who own #3 with him. Jimmy was a cop and got into trouble with the dogs and got pinched and sold off the dogs.

Missy II was sold to a guy in Yugo, Missy the mother was sold to Paula at Pit Weight Kennels. Hoover, Pretty Boy, Bonnie, Buttercup, and others Jimmy sent to Garland down in VA.
Back to Peaches, I wanted to breed Peaches when she got grown to Satan. When she was a pup I have a friend who was involved a lot with the dogs with me.
We travel all over with the dogs, there is a 8mm tape floating around with him and I with Koko & Shetia. We had known each other since we young and to this day still close friends. His name is Mark and he had gotten married and had to small daughters and wanted a female pup to raise with them. Peaches personality was perfect for them. Oh yes, Peaches could get protective of the family and those kids. She never cared to much for biker types or people with beards. But she never did care much for any thing with feather or fur. lol Peaches was a keeper. But my plans was always to use her as a brood matron.
I started looking for a stud to bred her too when she got older and knew more about her. Randy -Greasy Corner Kid I had known over the years and he had a dog name Echo? I believe he was off Creed's Polly and a Boudreaux male, I think it was Billy Boy or some thing like that. We talked about doing a breeding. In the mean time I had bred Peaches to Redman 2xw of Pat's dogs. He was double bred Reno, Jeep's brother. Got some first class bulldogs and wild colors that I didn't expect. Half the litter was red nose.

I didn't want to travel all the way to AR. to do a breeding. Then in Gamedog Digest on the inside back page I saw Check at stud in add from Julius Bourque.
That was the dog I wanted her bred too. So when I found time I started checking into finding the dog and setting up a breeding. Turns out he was sent to Texas to Lester Procell's yard North of Houston.
Julius put me into contact with him. It turns out Lester is getting out of dogs and he calls me with an offer. At the time I was dealing with Roger Elder in Texas and he also was dealing with Snakeman and Roger had more dollars then sense at the time.
Lester offers me the whole yard for $1,000. All except Billyson and Lena who was being sent to Western Canada. This included EVERY thing to do with dogs, from dog houses to crates to kennels,pedigrees, pups the whole nine yards.
I told Roger I had a deal for him, I told him once I gave him the information whether he bought 1 or all, he owned me Check. I told him he could come and stay at my house and breed to the dog free but Check was to come to me. Roger bought the whole yard, pups and all. I know there was over 9 grown dogs in the deal. Check had a litter on the ground of a gyp from Ms Pool Hall Red blood who later I saw Billyson was registered as the sire. Lena already produced Ch. Earl litter form a Rick Sorrells dog. Later Billyson and Lena dogs were bred in Canada to a friend of mine in the Northwest area named Gary Harmon who owned Traxlor's Ox 2xw. Before Gary died he sent me Ox and I did a breeding with him and Sin.

Roger got a pup from a litter where there was only 1 pup in the litter and his name was UNO. Who grew up to be a 4xw. Gary at Catch Dog said it was one the gamest dogs he had ever saw.
Well there was a problem on the deal. Roger calls me and says, after he had bought the yard, that Gary told him he knew about the deal and was offered the yard for $1,300 and he was going to send me $300. and keep Check. ah wrong idea there... In turn I had to explain things to him and how it was going to turn out if I didn't get Check as agreed upon. In no kind words and it was going to get ugly and mean. This has no imprtance to do with Check now. I ended up with him and that is all that matters.

Before I bred Check I called Floyd and ask him about Check. He stated he didn't do the breeding to produce Check that friend of his did and gave me his name that I no longer remember. I asked Floyd if Check was any good and in his Cajun voice told me "son that dog was tested 3 times by 3 different people way beyond the point any dog should have ever been tested!"
Check was 5 years old when I got him. Check was born in 1980 and I put Check, Ch. Iron Bear and Ch. Iron Bocat all down in 1992.

I now have Check and did the breeding to Peaches. From the litter came 4 males and 6 females and all looked like they were stamped out of a mold.

A male died young and Mr. Johnson's female from Philly, his female isn't on the list nor is Mace 1xw.
I sent Mace and Shannon as pups with Check over to Garland on the referral from Jimmy.
I let Garland keep Check at the time to breed to Buttercup, his daughter. I would pick him and his pups up later.
While he was over there, I understand Check was being bred to other females. I had at least 5 people call wanting papers to a litter they claimed was off Check and had paid a stud free. Check was finally bred to Buttercup. I went to VA. and picked up 2 pups and Check. The pups I named Ox and Magic. I had a partner in the dogs named Kelly. She had Tiger Brown off Satan & Sadie and Chewy of Check and Peaches. Kelly wanted the pups and wanted this breeding to happen. Kelly paid all the expenses involved. When I got back with the pups I took them to Kelly. Check was in real bad shap and I took him directly to a Vet.
I introduced Kelly to her boy friend Lynn P. who owned, at the time, Brandy a grand daughter to Satan. We had bred them twice and had two litters from them.
1 litter was Jessie who I sent as a pup to John Herman in Harrisburg PA.
He later sent Jessie back to me because he was losing his home. John also had Josey off Ch. Iron Bobcat and Iron Red Ruby, a brother to Braddock, Rowdy, Yankee etc.
When Shannon got grown she was bred to Ch. Crock. Mace was checked out with Crock and went on to be a winner and then sent to a friend of Jimmy and mine in New England name Richard. Before Shannon was sent off I had Garland send her back here. I also got back from an old friend in AZ., Sin from Bernardo.

The pups:
Mark kept Brutus who later won over Jessie Boggs and Big Mac in under 50 minutes. Shannon was good and so was Sin. I remember talking to J.B. Marino and he tried to talk me out from breeding Check to Peaches. He told me that when Peaches' sister Baby was bred to Check they got a lot of cold dogs. When he found out years later I had done the breeding he called again and asked me how many were cold. I said to him "COLD? Damn son I'm still trying to find a cur!!"
Sin I bred to Teddy off Missy II and Pretty Boy. Pretty Boy was her great great Uncle? From this litter came the known Red Bonney. I also bred Sin to Tralor's Ox.
Tiffany I sent to a young fellow in Cincinnati was going to college and he let her go to Blackwell. He took her and bred her to Cotton Tackett's Ch. Devil Sam 4xw and very well bred dog who produce several well known champions. From the litter came Cotton who was first sent to Clyde Johnson who had success with him and later on around to Tom and Tom made him a champion for the Untouchables.

Shannon I was breeding to different males for a cross. For Garland Shannon already produce from Ch. Crock's litter Jr.'s Ch. Tank and Groves' Crockette.
Which I never register because I never had anything off the litter.
I bred Shannon to my male Cassius Clay and produce DG dogs. I bred her to Ch. Bramble and winners like Brazier and their son Bramble Jr. produced champions.
In 1992 after Check had died I met a fellow I thought was a pretty straight shooter but you never really know a person until you have done some deals with them.
This article isn't about him but the line of dogs I had. I had several breeding I wanted to do with Shannon and had them set up. I had talked to Mau Mau about Ch. Stein, Mr. Bill about Gr. Ch. Mongoose and Jack about Hazcom's Ch. Rock. First I wanted her bred to Gr. Ch. Joey. Why is because I had known Greg since he was young and he wanted a pup off Peaches and Redman's litter. So when I offered and asked to do a breeding to Shannon to Joey, Greg jumped at the chance and wanted only 2 pups for stud fee.

I kept Shannon with me at all times so I know no other male got to her. I kept her until she went out of season. The fellow from Al. want the blood really bad.
Kelly was getting married to some one else she had met and wanted out of the dogs. Tiger had passed away, so I sent Jessie down there to AL. Kelly wanted to keep Chewy. She had an investment in Check and Buttercup litter so she sold her HALF interest to the fellow from AL. I owned half of Ox until the day he died. Kelly never was paid in full for Magic. The fellow claimed she died of cancer but she wasn't even 4 years old. After Joey's litter I wanted her bred back into the family. There wasn't to many around for studs. Ox no one knew 100% sure off. I figured if all the pups are kept and checked out then who's business is it when they aren't paying the feed bill?
I had several litters due at the same time. The fellow in AL. ask me if he could whelp the litter. Shannon was a good mother never had problems giving birth and he had some experience in whelping litters. When I met in 1992 he had a couple of litters off the 2 dogs he owned. I felt some risk but the person was gunho at the time and was taking good care of his dogs. He had been up here many times and I had been to his place. I taught him a lot about taking care of dogs and whelping litters and many facets in the breed. To bad, in a few short years he got amnesia about things.

Previously I was trying to breed Bonney here to Brutus. Twice she didn't take. I took him to an ICG Vet and they found a tumor in his prostate and he was sterile.
So I bred Bonney to Ox as well. For some time I didn't know what was going on with deals. When the litter of Shannon and Ox was born the fellow wanted to keep them and raise them. As they got age to sell, he wanted to sell some. I told him no. I refused to sell any of the females. I had him send one free to my old friend Benardo in AZ. The pup's name was Bootlegger. I got a phone call from him and asked why another kennel's name was on his pup instead of mine. He wanted it corrected. I called ADBA and they corrected what I thought at the time was their mistake.
I had many mistakes made by them over the years so I didn't think much of it.
Shannon was around about 7 or 8 years old at the time. This was the last litter she ever had. I later found out the fellow was placing his name as owner of the litter.
Owner of the dam is the breeder. The person has to sign the litter registration.
Here was my mistake in trust. I felt since he was getting free pups then the least he could do was pay the registration fee. I sent him the litter papers to be sent in. Little did I know he had found a tattoo friend who could sign my name exactly. I had always filled out the paper work with my kennel name in front of the pups name and ADBA has always known I never allowed name changes on pups I had bred. This is how later on an employee informed me of what was going on when it kick out about other dogs and the signature didn't match. To bad it cost her a job for faxing me the information. My kennel name was taken off and his put on. ADBA couldn't tell the difference and I need to get an expert and take him to court. For what? A big expense?

Instead I cut the whole deal lose when everything came to light. I in turn called in the farm out dogs from other of the breeding of Sin, Chewy, Lad and Traxlor's Ox.
Lad was the hardest to set up because an ex Nomad of the Avenges M.C. Smokin Joe kept him in IN. Joe was good friends with Mark and that is how he got him when he was a pup.
I went to AL. in 1998 and took what I wanted and left what I didn't. Most were to old to breed or sterile.

Some while later there was magazine that came out name "The Truth" published by Doc Holiday from OK.
In it Cajun Kennels would advertise as many forgotten old timers.
In one issue I was reading a letter written about the percentage of dog winning off dogs from the Billy Boy blood. It was something like 43 & 5.
Very high percentage. I could believe that.
I personally never bred to a dog that had cured but the ones I let stay in AL. was bred to a low dollar champion who had on all 4 and still produced dogs many thought highly of.

Most success of the Billy Boy dogs coming through Check was done by me. Thou later many have given recognition to some one else.
So be it. It is was about the dogs not the people.
Check produced some dogs that Floyd stated "you had to kill every hair on their body to stop them!"
In my opinion, Check was never given his just dues as a stud. Besides the many he sired, there was many champions off dogs he had sired.
In my opinion he qualified for Register of Merit and surely was a Producer of Record!
Thou the person in AL. never saw Check, the rest of you can see a picture of him on my yard in T.L. Williams' book.
The picture was given to Terry from Bernardo of one I sent to my old friend who I miss talking too.
I had pictures years ago on a website of Check, Chewy, Sin, Shannon and the rest.
It went out of service hosting free sites so I never put it back up. I believe there might be pictures of those dogs on the links above.
Check had very large teeth. His cutters were as big as my thumb. His personinality was sweet as sugar. So was what he produced.
Check chain weight was in the upper 50's. He was one the gamest ever to look through a collar.......

This was Check when he was much older on my yard.

Thanks Iron Mike. I was always lookin for The Billy Boy blood "straight" so to speak. Without the "Johnny Jr". I wish I had some now as well as then. Truly double-dog game dogs.

My scooby dog off zena is that stuff and I Love that dog he is no joke out of all the dogs I have seen he is in the top 5 for sure. I like how smart they seem to be about never geting hurt its un real how fast them boze dogs are. I am schocked there is not alot more of them around.

Good story Mike especially like the part about Hammonds !!! I also had a good Boudreaux Male and it was a story how I got him to but was sure glad to have him he was one of my favorites.I had to sell him to Bernardo when I was losing my home from all the raids at our home.I was really upset the day I sent him to Bernardo.I still have some breedings to him put away would love to breed him to a good Boze bitch. Ch Segal off Boudreaux's Maverick out of Boudreaux's No name.
