the new pup is very picky with the food.she starved herself to the point i thought there was something wrong with her stomach.so started her on chicken and rice and she would eat the the chicken no bother but not the rice.i heard its not the best to feed such young dogs on meat only diet.what would i have to add in to make sure shes geting everything she needs.shes gotten pretty scrawny over the past two weeks cause iv just tried to get her to eat the puppy food but shes haveing none of it

it"s a game of wits egan, a healthy pup won"t starve itself. are you keeping up with her worming routine ?
at the moment i am feeding my pup raw beef or chicken in the morning and then dry food for the rest of the day, if he"s hungry he eats it ..try not to let the pup play you !

all wormed and the even vet said a few weeks ago that she was healthy then i gave her some of the older dogs feed which i give meat with and she just wont eat her puppy food.i did just leave her with the food if she didnt eat she wouldnt get fed.done this with the lil bitch for week and half without her eating proper.threw some beef down in front of her and she chomped her way through in seconds.shes only 14 weeks aswell and iv never had a pup that was as scrawny at her age

my pup looks scrawny mate, it could be a growth spurt , pups change all the time fat one week thin n leggy the next.
if your worried though you could weigh her and keep a check that way.[IMG]

Sounds like she's just picky. She'll eat what's available if she's hungry enough. I started my pups on raw at 10wks. You just have to include a healthy fat source like chicken fat for them. That'll put weight on them.

4.5 lbs does seem rather light. you could try these till she improves.
    rice pudding
    porridge
    wheetabix with warm milk
can you get pet mince from your local butcher? if so add a little beef suet to it as well.

I used bacon grease thinned out with a little water and mixed in with the kibble to get my picky eater eating.

Pour goats milk over her kibble and let it soak in for 5-10 minutes, I bet she digs right in.

We had a little female who refused to eat for about 2 weeks, she would only take very little and was getting quite skinny. I used goats milk and Heinz Oatmeal Baby Pablum to start then added some softened kibble to the mix and gradually removed the pablum, then the goats milk until she was eating just kibble and veggie oil. After about 2 weeks she was back on weight and now shes just like the rest when it comes to feed time, scarfing her food down without even chewing, lol.

  19. Egan it sounds like there is something physically wrong with the pup, but in reply to your question I would suggest:

Feed more red meat with plenty of fat on it, chicken is fine for adults and cheaper but a canine eats more red meats normally than aves in the wild.
Feed the skin and also the innards of the chicken when you do feed chicken.
To the rice add a little salt in the water you cook it with and afterwards a couple of table spoons of olive oil will add taste they seem to like.
I would not feed any dairy products at all, I know of no canine that naturally eats or drinks cows milk, cheese...etc. and I don't believe their digestive systems are well prepared to assmilate dairy products, usually a pup will have runny feces when it is fed milk.
Fry some cows liver and feed it, it is full of fats and proteins and iron that will cause a more rapid weight gain.
Beef or chicken broth should be added to the meals, so make sure you save some from what you cook or make some. It will conatain some fats and the odor should attract the pup to the food more.
If you can get the pup to eat them, throw a couple of table spoons of linseeds in the food, it's great for the hair, full of omegas 3 and 6, has vegetable fats and proteins.
Boil some carrots, slice them up and throw them in the bowl.
Hard boil an egg, take off the shell and slice it and throw it in the bowl.

What I have posted here is what I fed all my pups from the day they were 15 days old till the present. A man I highly respect once told me to raise my dogs like they would be raised in the wild and I have never regreted having followed his advice.

Here are what one of my litters looked like when they were 2 months old being raised on what I posted.

pups can eat raw fine. how old is yours?

for pups: wings, necks, ground meat, liver, heart, gizzards, probiotic, multivitamin would be a good start.
