if you drag a chain be careful the chain can tangle and limit movement and motion or flip up and nail yer dog somewhere, you play fetch with the dogs? throw that dam ball in a pond and see how quickly swimmin tires yer hound, sounds silly but theyll tire and look to u for help and this gives you a chance to show that dog he can trust you, and they stay cool,

yeah i use the water. I never really thought highly of weight and resistance training but im think of experimenting with it.

  6. its gd for yer dog like i used to use a medium sized car tyre (no rims) tied to his harness and do flirt pole on the grass puts some strength into em.

I never found the need to "strength train" any of the dogs I've conditioned. mill and handwalking works great.

  8. yea each to thare own a supose.i always do some strenght work a would say it gives them a better chance in some sticky situations.

if you do any resistance training in a keep i find its best to stop it a couple weeks before the show so the muscles have plenty of time to recover. I do some chain dragging with a harness with some of the leaner dogs and i must say you can see the difference

yeah budboy, i noticed this with one of my dogs. i didn't stop his training soon enough before the show. he looked fan-freakin-tastic the week after the show. i could kick myself in the ass for not stopping soon enough.

I think if you decide to do any kind of strength training, you should do it in the off season.

I have some kind of strength training in all my keeps, dragging chains is good, but I stop chain dragging 4 wks before the show. Weighted collars I use very often, it works good for the neck and shoulders if used correctly. I use the heavy collar every other walk for the males and every third walk for females. Only got one regular swimmer as of right now, but I try to get him swimming twice a week in the summer. It's easy to over due strength training, that's my major con. The dogs will do what ever you ask of them even if it hurts them, a pulled muscle can set a good dog back a few weeks or more, so I really focus on the dogs when strength training. When ever my dogs strength train really hard, I give them 2 days off from heavy strength training exercises. JMO

swimming is great exercise but I wouldn't consider it strength training.
when I think strength training I imagine a weighted collar or dragging weights.

my way of thinkin was that adding muscle mass would increase the dogs weight. I would rather have a bigger dog at its smallest possible weight

The main problem with muscle is that it takes twice as much oxygen to feed bulk muscle than lean muscle. With that said, your dog is using far more oxygen to sustain bulk muscle strength than actually needed. Having good lean muscle as well as a strong dog should give you a serious workin dog. JMO

i agree, just gonna do some stuff outside a keep to compare and contrast. As i meantioned i never have tried it so i wanna see if i want to add light strength/resistance training with the cardio. Maybe to just strengthen the neck if nothing else...

i think for the weighted harness.....not the pulling kind......is best imho.....depending on the type of "work" hes being trained for.......agree with taking the weights off a certain amount of time away from keep/conditionings end!

I'd rather my dog pull light weight for a long period of time over heavy weight for a short period of time. But at the end of the day it aldepends on what the training is for, you must use different methods of training for different kinds of events. I do strength traing to build muscle endurance, not really for brute power or short bursts of strength. JMO

that is exactly what im experimenting with, just not sure how to go about it without adding unneccessary bulk.
